Getting Started with EndNote Web This is a quick overview of using EndNote Web – it refers to our more detailed workbook which covers the main functionality of EndNote Web.

When you are gathering references for an assignment or research, EndNote Web can help. It will:     

Provide an online storage for your references that you can access from anywhere Allow you to import references from a wide variety of databases (including Google Scholar & Swansea’s iFind systems) Allow you to sort and organize your references Allow you to format your references in a huge range of styles Work automatically with Microsoft Word so you can write your paper and insert a reference directly, compiling a formatted reference list at the end.

If you are adding references manually, the EndNote Web workbook Section 2 will take you through this process. Make sure you include sufficient information for the type of material. Check your referencing style guide if you are unsure. If you are importing references, you will need to look up the correct method for the system you are using. Each has a slightly different method. This information is on Blackboard (see link above). You may find you need to tidy up some details once you start using the references to create a bibliography.

Organizing References The “Organize” tab allows you to create groups: Section 6 of the EndNote Web workbook takes you through this process. You can add references to groups on the “My References” tab. Creating a Simple Bibliography You can create a simple list of references via “Format” / “Bibliography”. You will need to select the correct “Bibliographic Style” to match the guidelines you have been given (e.g. APA 6th is used for Human Science assignments). Section 10 of the EndNote Web workbook covers this. Using EndNote Web with Word = “Cite While You Write” You can write a document in Word and automatically insert and format references from EndNote Web. Section 8 of the EndNote Web workbook takes you through this. If you are using your own PC or laptop, you will need to download the plugin (Options / Download Installers): http://www.myendnoteweb.com/EndNoteWeb.html?func=downloadInstallers& The EndNote Web workbook http://goo.gl/5e7qLg (PDF)
