BOARD MEMBER

OF THE YEAR Linda Hoffman is a partner with Carver, Darden, Koretzky, Tessier, Finn, Blossman & Areaux L.L.C. Linda has been serving on the United Way Board of Directors for 3 years. She chairs United Way’s community impact initiatives and in 2012, she donated 58 hours to the organization. Her peers praised her as the “driving force behind our commitment to a multi-year financial commitment to improve the reading skills of students at the Global Learning Academy.” Her unwavering dedication and her quiet service in multiple capacities earned her high praise. In relation to the Next Right Thing, peers were complimentary of her focus and her continued monitoring of progress. Her willingness to share her legal expertise and time along with her varied service over the past year earned her this recognition as Board Member of the Year. Linda’s commitment to our community is evidenced in her current commitments that include: IMPACT 100, Pensacola Bay Area (member 2004-present; President 2006-2008),); Sacred Heart Foundation Development Board (2004-current); Member Board of Directors, Pensacola Chamber of Commerce (2007 – current).

STAFF MEMBER

OF THE YEAR Tom Hilton is the Chief Financial Officer for United Way of Escambia County. In 2012, Tom donated 427 hours to United Way and to other charities in our area. He regularly shares his financial expertise and can be seen at the United Way office almost every weekend making sure the organization’s financial and reporting needs are met. Tom’s peers are appreciative of his willingness to support others and mentioned that “he never turns an employee away when they pop into his office.” Tom’s ability to share his knowledge and to teach others campaign software, financial reporting and more has earned him praise as having the “patience of a saint”. While Tom’s expertise and willingness to lead is recognized, his ability to lift staff morale earns him the appreciation of his peers. While efficient, he still finds time to joke with others through emails, casual conversations in the hall, or quick phone conversations. One staff member called Tom the “unsung Hero” of United Way. Ultimately, Tom is recognized as a great asset to United Way. Because of him our financial statements and budgets are more accurate than they have ever been!

How do we serve to leverage your dollars for the

benefit of our entire community?

On October 28, 2011, 1,124 Day of Caring volunteers completed 110 projects in our community - exceeding the previous year’s impacts of 90 projects! Volunteers contributed more than 5,620 hours of labor to help local non-profit organizations and schools with tasks ranging from lawn maintenance, painting and cooking meals to hosting wish-list drives, which saved local charities and schools an estimated $120,043 in labor costs. This year’s Day of Caring is October 12, 2012. Email [email protected] to volunteer or sign up your project.

In 2011, United Way of Escambia County participated in Cram the Van so that school supplies could be distributed to more than 7,600 students in Escambia County who did not have the necessary supplies to begin their school year.

I haven't used United Way services. Why should I give? United Way funded services help everyone. A popular misconception is that only the jobless and "at-risk" individuals benefit from United Way and its partner programs. Everyone has problems and needs... marital problems, troubled teens, aging parents and children with special needs. United Way services are available to all. Your United Way contribution helps your co-workers, friends, neighbors and family. Take a look at the list below and ask yourself whether you or someone you love has used services from any of the following:

STORIES

June says she doesn’t know what she’d do without her Senior Companion, Cynthia. “Cynthia is kind, sympathetic and a joy to have around. My living situation would be so much worse without her.” Cynthia volunteers an average of 20 hours a week through Council on Aging’s Senior Companion program, helping June with shopping, light housekeeping, cooking and other daily tasks that she may not otherwise be able to do. June also says her son, Chuck, is grateful for the help and support Cynthia provides for his mom. “My son works, and he is more at ease because there is someone who cares for me.”

Three-year-old Riley, who has been diagnosed with Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome, receives speech and physical therapy at ARC Gateway's Pearl Nelson Center (PNC). Because the syndrome is so rare, doctors told Riley's parents she would most likely never walk, never talk, and may never know that her parents are her parents. At her young age, she is already proving those doctors wrong. "Early intervention services, like what is offered at PNC, are so important and make such an impact on a child at a young age. By starting services early, there are no limitations to what our girl can achieve."

Growing up in the shadow of the Downtown Y, Bobby Crumpton played hide and seek, shot pecans in homemade slingshots, and did his best not to get run off by long-time YMCA director Hollice Williams. Today, at 53, Bobby says the Y still gives him a point of reference and a place to call home. Bobby, a diabetic, had already lost part of one leg. He lost the other leg after a post-Hurricane Ivan infection. Waking up after surgery a double amputee, Bobby says reality hit him hard. For a time he was bound to a wheelchair, but for the past three years, he’s learning to walk again with prosthetics. He lives alone and is completely independent, having developed his own systems of managing his life. Exercise at the Y has helped him regain his strength and balance and provided a great place to meet friends.

2-1-1 is more than a phone number

it’s the community’s

resource and referral center. United Way of Escambia County took a bold step last year to become a 2-1-1. Your 2-1-1 not only supported over 35,000 residents and visitors but also the social service agencies in the community. Over 50% of our referrals to 2-1-1 actually come from the agencies when they run out of resources to assist their clients. Our 2-1-1 team, who carry national certifications, submitted documentation for full national accreditation in May, and expanded the resource database to include 10 counties.

FSECC/CFC HIGHLIGHTS

United Way of Escambia County acts as the Fiscal Agent of the Florida State Employee’s Charitable Campaign (FSECC) and the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). Each year, employee workplace campaigns are conducted within federal and state offices reaching over 21,000 employees. These employees are provided the opportunity to make a contribution to various pre-approved non-profits located locally, nationally and internationally. Acting as the fiscal agent, United Way conducts quarterly distributions, honoring the designations of the state and federal employees.

2-1-1

Our Web site usage has skyrocketed to 70,000 this past year (almost double last year’s volume). Perhaps this is because our entire database is real-time on our Web site (www.211nwfl.org). During disasters (like the flooding in June), we were able to update the resources within minutes and even operate remotely when our building was surrounded by water. During the June floods, 2-1-1 captured flood victim data and redirected the requests for assistance to disaster teams from the American Red Cross and BRACE.

HIGHLIGHTS

In 2011, the state employees of Escambia County contributed $35,564 through the FSECC program and the federal employees of Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties of Florida contributed over $706,530 through the CFC program. Generally about 30% of all pledges are designated to local area non-profits, that’s about $222,628 staying in our community, of which $6,558 was designated to United Way of Escambia County. We thank our state and federal employees for caring enough to give portions of their pay to others in need.

United Way Awards More than $1 Million from Community Chest United Way of Escambia County announced that $1,036,680 will be awarded from the Community Chest to area non-profit agencies. Another $351,750 was also raised in donor designated funding and $76,309 was paid out to “The Next Right Thing,” the winner of United Way’s Education Impact Request for Proposal. This funding represents a $76,152 or 5.2% increase over the prior year. As impressive is the fact that 10 new programs will receive funding this year, spreading area impact to 45 programs at 34 local agencies. Donors also expanded their impacts from prior year funding of 98 agencies to 140 agencies; a 43% increase. Fifty United Way donors dedicated more than 40 hours of volunteer service over a nine-week period. They evaluated applications, toured

program sites and listened to oral presentations on requests. The volunteers then made recommendations to United Way’s Board of Directors on how donations from the Community Chest should be distributed in the most effective way possible. This year, 50 programs applied for funding. Approximately 160,000 children and adults in our community will be positively impacted by the donations awarded to the programs. Agencies were able to leverage community chest funds to receive matching funds of $1,625,788 effectively increasing donors’ gifts from $1,036,680 to $2,662,468. Every $1 donated to the chest was leveraged to a $1.63 return, becoming $2.63. For a list of award recipients, visit www.unitedwayescambia.org.
