Globish: The New Way to Speak English to Japanese Tourists Lunch & Learn Thursday, November 3rd 11:30-1:30 pm—Outrigger Hotel In this workshop you will learn: Did you know that most Japanese tourists who visit Guam have had six or more years of English instruction during their school years? Did you know that they feel obligated to know English and that if they fail at a conversation in English, they often feel great disappointment? Many businesses on Guam, including hotels, restaurants, and retail stores highly depend on the visits of our Japanese, Korean, and Chinese neighbors. We want our tourists to enjoy every minute and every interaction while on our beautiful island. If they do not feel understood or if they feel that they have failed to communicate clearly they will not want to come back. It is imperative that we communicate with our visitors in such a way that they want to return season after season.

And you can learn to do this. WATSON Training & Development is offering a Lunch & Learn Workshop on Globish: The New Way to Speak English to Japanese Tourists. You do not have to speak Japanese. They speak English, but do not always understand if our speech is not clear, if we speak too fast or use local phrases. Globish gives each participant the tools needed to communicate in English to tourists whose native language is not English so that both sender and receiver are completely understood.

To communicate clearly (verbally and non-verbally) with Japanese and other non-native English speakers. To use words and phrases that are easily understood by Japanese tourists. To avoid words and phrases that might confuse Japanese tourists. To evaluate a Japanese tourist’s English language capability and then to use this evaluation to reply clearly. How to avoid accidently insulting a Japanese tourist in conversation. And much more.

Instructor: Mark Heath, CFA, CPA—served as UOG’s Chief Financial Officer for 15 years, was a member of Government of Guam Retirement Fund Board, and now spends 25% of his time in Japan marketing to Japanese companies.
