Set up a folder of website links for easy student access. To avoid confusion, we suggest giving each link the name in bold used in the booklet. ◆ Basketball Team Flags https://www.gc2018.com/sport/basketball ◆ History of our suburbs http://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/thegoldcoast/history-of-our-suburbs-2557.html Photocopy the student activity sheets back to back — ensure both sheets are the same way up. (You may need to select ‘Flip side on short edge’ if printing double sided.) For younger or less dextrous students, you may like to pre-cut the sheets into strips.
What it will look like! A mini concertina booklet with ten pages and eight activities.

Commonwealth Games — Interesting Information ● ● ● ●
● ●
The Commonwealth is a voluntary association that comprises countries that were formerly British colonies. Only countries from the Commonwealth can compete in the Commonwealth Games (CG). The first CG was held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada, with 400 athletes from 11 countries competing in 59 events across 6 sports. Over the years the Games have grown, with the Gold Coast 2018 Games hosting 6600 athletes/officials from 70 nations/territories competing in 277 events across 18 sports and 7 para sports. ◆ The Core Values of the Games are Humanity, Equality and Destiny. ◆ The CG are often referred to as the ‘Friendly Games’ and aim to unite Commonwealth countries through sport. 2018 is the XXI (21st) Commonwealth Games. The Kombumerri people were the original inhabitants of large parts of the area now known as the Gold Coast. The local dialect of the region is Yugambeh, which is where the 2018 mascot, Borobi, gets its name — Borabi means ‘koala’.
Further Interesting Information and Resources The central values of the Kombumerri community were to keep life simple and to have respect for family, the environment and self. This site explains more about the cultural practices, codes of conduct and stewardship of the environment from a traditional owner’s perspective. https://hillstoheadlands.com.au/kombumerri-saltwater-people/ The Gold Coast City Council site, which has a local history section that includes historical photos. http://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/thegoldcoast/gold-coast-histories-26556.html The official site of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, which includes a fun interactive map of the Queen’s Baton Relay. https://www.gc2018.com/ The official Commonwealth Games site, which includes information and histories of all Commonwealth Games. http://commonwealthgames.com.au/
Extension Ideas If your students are showing a deeper interest in these activities, you may like to make the most of the opportunity. Students can: ● Further research the countries whose flags are shown. They can look for: ◆ Location on a map ◆ Population ◆ Capital city ◆ History of connection to Commonwealth ◆ Currency ◆ Most successful athlete from each country in the Commonwealth Games ● ●
Research the history of place names in their own local area. Go to the Queen’s Baton Relay interactive map and watch the video clips from countries participating. (See Further Interesting Information and Resources for the link.) 9781925490329 © Blake Education • 2018 • Commonwealth Games
