25 coed years at Poly Prep Poly Prep Country Day School seniors celebrated one of life’s milestones on May 30 at commencement exercises that paid tribute to 25 years of coeducation at Poly. “Coeducation means learning from each other, learning about each other, and learning to accept and respect all of the differences that make each of us unique,” said one of Poly’s senior faculty members, Marie Corkhill. Brooklyn’s high schools graduates of 2003 By Deborah Kolben The Brooklyn Papers
BerkeleyCarroll School The graduating class of the Berkeley-Carroll School celebrated their commencement at Congregation Beth Elohim, on Garfield Place at Eighth Avenue in Park Slope, on the morning of Friday, June 13. The guest speaker, Samuel Chaltain, a former English teacher at the coed private school at 181 Lincoln Place,
was recognized for his work as an executive with Freedom Forum, a Virginia-based, First Amendment rights organization, and for the personal connection he forged with the students, said Joan Martin, the school’s director of communications. The school’s featured student speaker, Shanell Lockhart, of Canarsie, will be attending Brown University in the fall. Lockhart was chosen from among the 47 graduates for her academic achievement as
well as her community service work. While half of the 800 students at Berkeley-Carroll live in Park Slope, the other half come from all over Brooklyn. And some from even further. Max Popov, of Bulgaria, will be the first international student to graduate from the school. Popov enrolled in the school in 10th-grade and lived with a Berkeley-Carroll family. He will be attending Pitzer College, in California, in the fall.
Senior Adam Ottavino, who has been playing baseball since he was 7, was drafted in the 30th round by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, but plans to attend Northeastern University. Of the school’s 800 students, about a quarter have attended since early childhood. The school was founded when the Carroll Street school merged with the all-girl Berkeley Institute in 1982.
Brooklyn Friends School An independent Quaker school housed in a seven-story art deco building in Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Friends School held its commencement ceremony at the New York Marriott Brooklyn, at 333 Adams St., on Wednesday, June 11 at 7:30 pm. David Jones, a Brooklyn Friends graduate who is CEO of the Community Service Society of New York, addressed the school’s 36 graduating seniors. Recognized for his lifelong dedication to public service, Jones writes a biweekly column for the Amsterdam News, hosts a cable television show, and is a former chairman of Carver Federal Savings Bank, the largest AfricanAmerican managed bank in the nation. He holds a degree from Wesleyan University and a law degree from Yale University. Dancer Edisa Weeks (BFS ’83), whose passion for dance was fueled during her years at the school, received the George Fox Distinguished Alumnus Award. After graduating from Brown University, Weeks went on to join the Alvin Ailey School and later the Dance Brazil and Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance companies. Most recently, she formed the Manhattan-based DELiROUS Dance Company. She also teaches at Brooklyn Friends School. The graduating class selected Alap Vora as the student speaker. Vora, who has attended Brooklyn Friends since kindergarten, and was selected as the speaker for his eighthgrade graduation, will be attending George Washington University. He is also a participant in an Indo-Pak basket-

Poly Prep Country Day School, in Dyker Heights, celebrated 25 years of coeducation at this year’s commencement at their 9216 Seventh Ave. campus on Friday, May 30. We all have a responsibility to do this. Live up to your responsibility,” said Corkhill. The senior class president, Peter Rocco, said that in exchange for hard work, students had come away with an education. “Fewer and fewer schools try to build character,” said Rocco. “This school has made us better men and women.” Asking them to “forgive the cliche,” Rocco reminded his fellow graduating seniors, “We are charged with making the world a better place.” Seven seniors were presented with major awards. The Poly Cup, for dedication to the school and its ideals, went to Susan Sapega, who will be
attending the University of Pennsylvania. The Scull Plaque, for excellence in scholarship and athletics, went to Jennifer Romanelli who will attend Connecticut College. Kazmira Pytlak received the Creativity Prize and the Mitchell Prize, awarded to the outstanding senior in English literature. Marsha Denise Bannister received the School Service Award, honoring character, loyalty, service and decorum. She will be attending Georgetown University. The William M. Williams Prize for Intellectual Curiosity was awarded to Andres Dass Patacsil, who will be studying international relations at Columbia University. The Joseph Dana Allen Award, for the highest level of scholarship, was awarded to Staten Island resident Michael Marron, who will be attending Princeton in the fall. Krystal Florence Coke received this year’s Emmett
Gold Rout Cup, for great scholastic improvement. Coke earned a full scholarship to Central Connecticut College. This year, 329 scholarships — valued at almost $12 million — went to 110 graduating seniors. More than 50 colleges and organizations awarded scholarships to members of this year’s graduating class. More than 1,800 students received their degrees at commencement ceremonies at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus athletic field on May 15. The Brooklyn campus, at Flatbush and DeKalb avenues, was the first established by the university, which now has six metropolitan-area campuses and is the seventh-largest private university in the country. “The Class of 2003 celebrates a marvelous diversity, as well as accomplishment against great odds,” said Provost Gale Stevens Haynes. “Our students have proven they have the talent and tenacity to succeed, and I am confident they will make contributions to their communities and their professions.” The commencement speaker was Emmy Award-winning documentary fiilmmaker Ric Burns (“New York: A Documentary Film,” “The Civil War,” “Coney Island”), who received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree. Honorary degree recipients also included Ira Greifer, MD (’52), president of the Kidney and Urology Foundation of America; Esther Cooper Jackson, a longtime civil rights activist from Brooklyn, received the Doctor of Humane Letters degree; and author Richard Rodriguez was awarded the Doctor of Letters degree. The class valedictorian was Jason Altilio, a 21-year-old philosophy major who graduated with a 3.99 GPA and who has been accepted by two philosophy Ph.D. programs. Steinberg conferred degrees on 1,849 graduates, including exalting Media Arts graduate Rodney F. James, of Brooklyn (at left). There were 880 undergraduate and 969 graduate students, with 18 doctoral candidates in clinical psychology. The valedictorian was Jason Altilio, a 21-year-old philosophy major who graduated with a 3.99 GPA.

Sen. Hillary Clinton was keynote speaker at the Medgar Evers College commencement in Crown Heights. Following a speech by Borough President Marty Markowitz and a rousing introduction by Medgar Evers President Edison O. Jackson, Clinton invoked the memory of the slain civil rights leader for whom the college is named. Clinton charged the 753 graduates: “We are counting on you to help us guide our nation toward a destiny marked by freedom, not tyranny; prosperity, not recession; safety, not anarchy.”

LIU’s College of Pharmacy Long Island University’s Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences awarded degrees to more than 200 students at its 114th commencement exercises. One of the oldest and largest institutions of its kind in the nation, the school was established in 1886 as the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy and affiliated with Long Island University, now the country’s seventh-largest private university, shortly after the university was founded in 1926. Dean Stephen M. Gross said the class of 2003 would help answer a severe national shortage of pharmacists. “These graduates will find many career opportunities awaiting them,” Gross said. Commencement speaker Craig Fuller, honored with the Doctor of Humane Letters, was president and chief executive officer of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores. Also receiving a Doctor of Humane Letters was Robert Cartwright, president and general sales manager for Fuji Photo Film U.S.A. George Morrow, who also received a Doctor of Humane Letters degree, has used his passion for science and business acumen to build a highly successful career in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. Dr. Pedro J. Lecca (‘87) has been dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Science at Howard University since 1998. A member of the FDA’s Medical Devices Advisory Committee, he has written research grants totaling over $100 million

HS… Continued from page 3 Xaverian generated $14 million worth of scholarships this year and 98 percent were accepted to their first-choice college. The 1,285-student school attracts boys from all five boroughs. In addition to a renowned athletic program, community service is encouraged, with a requirement that graduating students commit to two days of community service in the spring semester of their senior year.
Bishop Ford Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School, at 500 19th St. in Sunset Park, held its 2003 commencement ceremony for 137 graduating seniors on the morning of June 7, in the school’s auditorium. Valedictorian Margaret Cwikla dedicated her address to planning for the future and holding onto ideals. Cwikla, who will attend Brooklyn College, was the recipient of a New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence and was also offered scholarships to St. Francis and Iona colleges. The 931-student Bishop Ford was founded nearly 40 years ago and named after Bishop Francis Ford, who grew up in Park Slope and joined the Maryknoll Missionary order. He was later imprisoned in China for protesting the treatment of Catholics under Communist rule. He died in a Chinese prison in 1952. The school’s stated mission is “to assist a diverse student body to attain its potential through academic, spiritual and social opportunities.” Formerly run by the Franciscan Brothers for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens, the institution went private and became a co-educational institution in 1976. It is now run by a board of trustees. In bidding farewell to the graduates, the featured commencement speaker, Principal Frank Brancato, encouraged students to “live an ordinary life in an extraordinary way.” Almost 95 percent of this year’s class was accepted to the college of their choice.

Make the
RIGHT CHOICES for our
children
Mayor Bloomberg took steps last year to attract certified teachers to our schools. That was the right choice, and it paid off with higher student test scores. But recently, the Mayor and the Chancellor have lost sight of the most important issues facing our kids. They need to put first things first: 1. Make smaller classes a primary aim. Since the administration won’t do it, the UFT – along with parents and community groups across the city – is helping lead a campaign for a City Charter amendment requiring it. 2. Turn around failing schools. Expand, don’t eliminate the Chancellor’s District, with its proven record of raising test scores, so that parents can have good neighborhood schools for their children. 3. Make schools a safe environment in which to learn. Establish adequate off-campus sites for disruptive students. 4. Make the school system open, accountable and efficient, with less bureaucracy and more focus on the classroom.
There are eight areas where teachers believe Mayor Bloomberg’s and Chancellor Klein’s “Children First” program has serious shortcomings. Their program: • offers no long-term plan to reduce class size in all grades. • adds to the bureaucracy by hiring high-paid executives while firing classroom staff. • has not fulfilled its promise to improve student discipline. In fact, serious incidents against teachers are up. • forces teachers to teach unproven programs without sufficient consultation, training or materials. • doesn’t allow teachers flexibility or creativity in the classroom to deal with kids on a one-on-one basis.
5. Urge Chancellor Klein and his deputies to gain a better understanding of our schools by teaching once a week.
• shortchanges special needs students by failing to commit resources.
Teachers know what works. We hope the Mayor and Chancellor will start working more with teachers and parents to put first things first.
• pays lip service to parent involvement but ignores what parents really need. • eliminates the Chancellor’s District, a highly successful model for turning around struggling schools.
