Especially after Superstorm Sandy summer remains a special time of the year in Ocean County for both our residents and welcomed guests. We have the opportunity to enjoy art and heritage events as well as the treasures of our beaches and natural resources. On April 10, 2013, the Ocean County Cultural & Heritage Commission hosted the second annual Salute to Ocean County: A Celebration of the Arts & Heritage at Ocean County College. Student visual art and performing art were displayed from this years Ocean County Teen Arts Festival. Awards this year were highlighted by Francis McGinley for the lifetime achievement in the art and Dr. Claribel Young for the lifetime achievement award named in honor of Pauline S. Miller, distinguished Ocean County Historian. Barbara Steele was honored with the first John C. Bartlett, Jr. government leadership award. Judith Gibson Leone received the first Ocean County Art Advocate Award. The Blahut family and Stafford Township were each given the annual Ocean County Historical Preservation Award. Anthony LaGruth, Mark B. Retacco and Steve Steiner were awarded the Special Recognition for Advancement of the Arts in Ocean County. Special Awards were given to Louis Glanzman and posthomously to Sheldon Wolpin. Ocean County’s arts and history organizations provide a rich tapestry of programs, events and classes for your summer enjoyment. Many of our towns and boroughs provide wonderful outdoor concerts including the Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation’s The Carousel of Music Concert Series to be held at various locations throughout the summer. The pages of this 2013 summer issue are graced with art work received in response to a request from the Laurelton Art Society. Please take special note of our exciting palette of summer cultural opportunities in the event listings. Have a happy and safe summer. Sincerely, Freeholder John C. Bartlett, Jr.
