Greetings from Freeholder John C. Bartlett, Jr. On behalf of the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders, I welcome you to the Fall 2011 issue of Out & About Ocean County, A Free News Guide to Arts & Heritage Events. Fall is a special time of year in Ocean County. Our ocean, bay and inland waters glisten in the crisp air and attract outdoor enthusiasts from all over the world. The Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders will host the 29th annual Ocean County Decoy and Gunning Show at Tip Seaman Park in Tuckerton on September 24 and 25. Wells Mills County Park in Waretown will celebrate the 17th annual Pinelands Jamboree on October 8. The Ocean County Columbus Day Parade Committee will host the annual Columbus Day Parade in Seaside Heights on October 9 and The Italian Street Festival from October 7 to 9. The Toms River Seaport Society will dedicate their new A Cat Building on October 8. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission will provide a free performance by the Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre (funded by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts) for school and community groups on October 21 at 10:00 AM at the Arts and Community Center at Ocean County College. A second, regularly priced performace will be held in the eveing at 8:00 PM. Please call the college box office at 732-255-0500 for more information. The Cultural and Heritage Commission will sponsor a number of informational workshops. On Monday, October 17, in the Bishop Memorial Library at the Toms River branch of the Ocean County Library, Ocean County College professor Ali Botein-Furrevig, PhD will give an informative program on the growing Orthodox Jewish community in Lakewood. The NJ Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts will give two special programs on the legal rights of individual artists: October 25 at the Ocean County Artist Guild for visual artists, and November 1 at Ocean County College Black Box Theater for musicians and writers. All programs begin at 7:00 PM. Please call (732) 929-4779 for additional information. The Cultural and Heritage Commission is requesting nominations for the 2011 Ocean County Preservation Awards. Applications are due on October 18. Honorees will be announced in December. The Awards will be presented at Ocean County College on March 16, 2012 at the Ocean County Celebration of the Arts and Heritage Festival.
