Greetings from Freeholder John C. Bartlett, Jr. On behalf of the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders, I welcome you to the Winter-Spring 2014 issue of Out & About Ocean County, A Free Newsguide to Arts & Heritage Events. On April 3, the public is invited to join our art and heritage community as they come together at Ocean County College Arts and Community Center for the fourth annual Salute to Ocean County: Celebration of the Arts and Heritage, a showcase of the best performances from the Ocean County Teen Arts Festival, the recognition of grant recipients and special awards of merit. You have until Tuesday, February 18 to nominate someone for either the Ocean County arts or history lifetime achievement award. The Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders is proud to announce the 2013 annual Ocean County Historic Preservation award. Lakewood Historical Society is being honored for the initial restoration efforts at the Sheldon Wolpin Lakewood Historical Museum at the former Newman School at Pine Park, Lakewood. Since 1980, more than fifty separate projects have been recognized by this award. The Cultural & Heritage Commission is completing their annual arts and history grant award cycle. This year twenty-two art and five history organizations will receive a total of $80,455 in grants through Ocean County funded by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the New Jersey Historical Commission. The Cultural & Heritage Commission staff will be conducting a number of professional workshops open to the interested public over the next few months including one on the care of historic graveyards. Finally, I am sad to share the loss of three individuals who have made significant contributions to the cultural fabric of Ocean County: Robert “Bob” O’Brien of Bay Head, Engel Sprague of Waretown and Charles Waterhouse of Toms River. I hope you are able to join me and get out and about this winter to enjoy the many cultural and artistic activities in our county. Sincerely,

Freeholder John C. Bartlett, Jr.
