Today’s Game: The Gwinnett Stripers continue the opening five-game road trip of 2018 today with game two of a three-game series vs. the Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay Rays).  In the South: Entering play, Gwinnett (1-2, .333) is tied with Norfolk (1-2, .333) for third place in the International League South Division. Both clubs trail first-place Charlotte (3-1, .750) by 1.5 games and second-place Durham (2-2, .500) by a half-game.  All-Time vs. Durham: Gwinnett is 88-105 (.456) in 193 prior meetings with Durham, and has won the season series vs. the Bulls three times in nine years: 2010 (12-9), 2012 (11-10) and 2015 (12-9).

Last Game: The Stripers held a 2-0 lead through six innings, but allowed four runs over the seventh and eighth innings to lose 4-2 to the Durham Bulls last night at DBAP. 1B Carlos Franco (2-for-4, HR, R, 2 RBI) plated both ROAD TRIP (1-2) Gwinnett runs, blasting an opposite-field solo homer off LHP Batting: Vidal Nuno in the second and adding an RBI single off RHP .136 (12-for-88), 5 2B, 0 3B, Forrest Snow in the sixth. RHP Lucas Sims struck out seven 2 HR, 6 R, 5 RBI, 2 SB Pitching: over 4.0 scoreless, three-hit innings for the Stripers, and RHP 2.81 ERA (8 ER in 25.2 IP), Andres Santiago followed with 2.0 scoreless, hitless innings in 12 BB, 27 SO, 3 Holds, 1 Save relief to hold the 2-0 lead. However, RHP Evan Phillips (L, 0-1) and LHP Phil Pfeifer (BS, 1) combined to allow four runs on three hits, four walks and three wild pitches over 2.0 innings to put the Bulls in front. Durham relievers Cody Hall (W, 1-0) and Hunter Wood (S, 1) kept Gwinnett hitless over the final 2.1 innings.

Starting Something: Stripers starting pitchers (Mike Soroka, Matt Wisler, Lucas Sims) have combined to go 1-0 with a 0.64 ERA (1 ER in 14.0 IP), three walks and 15 strikeouts in three games.  Sims: With last night’s outing (ND, 4.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 SO), he is 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA (2 ER in 16.0 IP) and 24 strikeouts over his last three starts with Gwinnett dating back to 7/22/17.  Wisler: Including Sunday’s start at Norfolk (ND, 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO), he is 6-1 with a 2.35 ERA (15 ER in 57.1 IP) in his last 12 outings (8 starts) with Gwinnett dating back to 6/15/17.  Soroka: Was the youngest Opening Day starter (20 years, 8 months, 2 days) in Gwinnett history on Friday at Norfolk. With the win in his Triple-A debut (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 SO), he’s 2-0 with a 0.47 ERA (1 ER in 19.0 IP) and 25 strikeouts in five outings when debuting at a new level.

Camargo on Rehab: Atlanta Braves INF Johan Camargo, on the 10-day disabled list since 3/26 with a right oblique strain, had his rehab assignment transferred to Gwinnett from Advanced-A Florida yesterday. Following last night’s game (0-for-3, BB), he is batting .091 (1-for-11, 2 BB, 4 SO) in three games on the rehab assignment. Camargo is a .299 hitter (72-for-241, 21 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR, 30 R, 27 RBI) in 82 career MLB games with the Braves, all during his 2017 debut.

All Eyes on Acuña Jr.: OF Ronald Acuña Jr., rated No. 2 on MLB.com’s Top 100 Prospects list, is 0-for-11 with four strikeouts over his first three games of the season. Acuña started MLB Spring Training 0-for-7 with three strikeouts over his first two games before going on to bat .432 (19-for-44, 1 2B, 4 HR, 8 R, 11 RBI, 4 SB) with a 1.247 OPS in 16 games with the Braves.  Breakout Season: Acuña hit .325 (181-for-557, 31 2B, 8 3B, 21 HR, 88 R, 82 RBI, 44 SB) in 139 games between Advanced-A Florida, Double-A Mississippi and Gwinnett last year, earning the 2017 Minor League Player of the Year award from both Baseball America and USA Today. He led MiLB in hits, at-bats and games while ranking third in total bases (291) and ninth in steals. Following the season, he was named MVP of the Arizona Fall League (.325, 7 HR, 16 RBI in 23G with Peoria).

Prospecting: The Stripers’ roster currently includes four members of the Atlanta Braves’ Top 30 Prospects list according to MLB.com: Acuña Jr. (No. 1), RHP Mike Soroka (No. 3), LHP Kolby Allard (No. 6) and OF Dustin Peterson (No. 16). Soroka and Allard are making their Triple-A debuts.  Soroka: Also rated No. 31 on MLB.com’s Top 100 Prospects list, he was named the Braves’ Phil Niekro MiLB Pitcher of the Year for 2017 after going 11-8 with a 2.75 ERA in 26 starts for Mississippi. In three outings with Atlanta this spring, he posted a 1.80 ERA and .125 BAA.  Allard: Also rated No. 58 on MLB.com’s Top 100 Prospects list, he went 8-11 with a 3.18 ERA in 27 starts for Mississippi in 2017, earning selection to the Southern League Postseason All-Star Team. In two outings with Atlanta this spring, he pitched 3.0 scoreless, hitless innings.  Peterson: Returns to Gwinnett after an injury-shortened 2017 season (out from 3/3-5/18 with a left hamate injury) in which he batted .248 with one home run and 30 RBI in 87 games. In 17 games with Atlanta this spring, he batted .259 with two homers and six RBI.

Berryhill is Back: Former Atlanta Braves catcher Damon Berryhill is 72-73 (.497) in 145 games as Gwinnett’s manager since the start of 2017. Berryhill, the sixth skipper in Gwinnett’s 10-year history, has a career managerial record of 490-460 (.516) in 950 games across 10 MiLB seasons.

2017 in Review: Playing in their final season under the “Braves” moniker, the Gwinnett Braves went 71-71 (.500) to finish tied for sixth in the 14-team International League. Gwinnett finished second in the IL South Division, 15.0 games behind first-place Durham (86-56), 5.0 games ahead of third-place Norfolk (66-76) and 10.0 games ahead of fourth-place Charlotte (61-81). Though the GWN Season Records G-Braves won six more games than in YEAR RECORD PLACE 2016 (65-78), the club failed to repeat as 2009 81-63 4th 2010 72-71 7th IL South Division Champions. 2011 78-65 5th  Steady in Second: Gwinnett spent 2012 62-82 12th 135 of 152 days in second place in the IL 2013 60-84 14th South Division (3 days from 4/13-4/15, 1 2014 65-77 12th day on 4/18, 26 days from 4/25-5/20, 105 2015 77-67 T-5th days from 5/23-9/4). About 2017: Allard spent the entire season with Mississippi, going 8-11 with a 3.18 ERA (53 ER in 150.0 IP) in 27 starts. He was named both a Midseason and Postseason All-Star by the Southern League, ranking among league leaders in starts (T-1st, 27), strikeouts (5th, 129) and ERA (8th, 3.18).  Pitcher of the Month: He was named Mississippi’s Pitcher of the Month for both April (1-1, 1.67 ERA in 5 starts) and August (1-2, 2.56 ERA in 5 starts).  Pitcher of the Week: On 5/4 at Birmingham, he matched a career high with 11 strikeouts (win, 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R) and was named SL Pitcher of the Week.  Dominant Numbers: In his eight wins, he posted a 0.57 ERA (3 ER in 47.2 IP)…in four daytime starts, he went 1-1 with a 0.86 ERA (2 ER in 21.0 IP)…over his final two starts, he went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER in 14.0 IP).

Career Highlights: Entering 2018, Allard was 16-14 with a 3.03 ERA (82 ER in 243.2 IP) over 46 career starts in the Braves system.  Selected by the Braves in the first round (14th overall) of the 2015 June draft out of San Clemente High School (San Clemente, CA).  Started his career in 2015 with the GCL Braves, pitching six scoreless innings over three starts and fanning 12 of the 20 batters he faced.  Opened 2016 with Rookie-level Danville, going 3-0 with a 1.32 ERA (4 ER in 27.1 IP) while holding batters to a .186 average.  Promoted to Class-A Rome in 2016, where he went 5-3 with a 3.73 ERA (25 ER in 60.1 IP) over 11 starts.
