Willie Brown Contributor Born: January 5, 1947; Died: July 21, 1971 Basketball player at Father Ryan HS who had a major impact on helping to break the color barrier, not only at Father Ryan, but across the state of TN...believed to be the first African-American to play for a predominantly white high school team in the NIL, the state of Tennessee, and presumably the South...in December of 1963, Willie and his teammate, Jessie Porter, stepeed on the court for Father Ryan and history was made...in his 2-year career the Irish posted a 52-6 record...led his team against a nationally touted Pearl HS in front of a crowd of 8,300...game believed to have been the 1st in the South between an African-American school and a predominantly white school...Willie was coached by fellow TSSAA Hall of Famer, Bill Derrick, during his time at Father Ryan
Ken Colquette Coach Born: August 3, 1947 Football coach for over 40 years...began in South Carolina and Georgia before going to Cleveland, TN as an Offensive Coordinator in 1976...began at Marion Co. HS in 1980 and was head football coach there for 17 years...fellow Hall of Famer, Bill Baxter, was the Principal at Marion Co. at the time...his teams won 4 TSSAA State Championships and were runners-up twice...in 2001, returned to Grundy Co.
