Handel and Vivaldi Arias from Baroque Orchestra Apollo’s Fire Take Center Stage at UCLA Live’s Royce Hall Oct. 28 Featuring the Los Angeles debut of countertenor Philippe Jaroussky *** “...a young singer with the tone of an angel and the virtuosity of the devil.” — Journal La Terrasse (France)*** Apollo’s Fire Baroque Orchestra presents Handel and Vivaldi Fireworks, an evening celebrating two baroque masters and featuring France’s astonishing young countertenor Philippe Jaroussky in his Los Angeles debut, at UCLA Live’s Royce Hall Friday October 28 at 8 pm. The program includes eight arias from 17thcentury composers Antonio Vivaldi and Georg F. Handel. Apollo’s Fire presents several of Vivaldi’s lesser-known arias alongside the acclaimed work of his contemporary, Handel, in an evening that highlights the legacy of the popular castrato singers of Italy, which were integral to successful operas of the time. Countertenor Philippe Jaroussky has established himself as one of the great vocal artists on the international scene, creating the unique castrato voice with his pristine and incredible range. Named for the classical god of music and the sun, Apollo’s Fire was founded in 1992 by awardwinning harpsichordist and conductor Jeannette Sorrell. The ensemble is a collection of creative artists who share Sorrell’s passion for the baroque ideals of rhetoric and emotional communication in music. Since its sold-out London debut at Wigmore Hall in 2010, Apollo’s Fire is credited with “forging a vibrant, life-affirming approach to the re-making of early music,” (BBC Magazine). The ensemble’s appearances include the Aspen Music Festival, the Boston Early Music Festival series, the Library of Congress, and concerts this year in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto, Boston, Madrid, Lisbon and Bordeaux. Tickets are available starting at $20 at uclalive.org, via Ticketmaster or through the UCLA Central Ticket Office at 310.825.2101.
