• If we hope to continue the rate of improvement in healthcare we must find a way to coordinate the contributions of countless clinicians, researchers & patients • Providers must drive I.T. as an enabler (not the other way around!!)

• Examples 'within' healthcare organisations – Learning – Cooperation v. Competition – Consumer driven

• Collaboration... – ..across organisations • Cooperatives such as Voluntary Hospitals of America enabled joint negotiation with national suppliers

– ..across sectors • Communities bringing together businesses, educators, healthcare providers

• Stakeholders cannot be expected to collaborate without a sustained intention to cooperate & a level of coordination (Noveck, 2010)
