Happy birthday Alan: a Festschrift for Alan Mackay Although Alan and I have worked on this Theme Issue together, it also serves as a celebration—a Festschrift, as the Germans have it—of his 85th birthday. Happy birthday Alan, many happy returns; ¡que cumplas muchos más! as they say here in Granada, from all of us involved in this issue.

We would simply like to see science take its place as a part of our universal culture contributing to the physical and intellectual development of all. Alan Lindsay Mackay and John Desmond Bernal in [1].
