Have Valuables? There’s an app for that! Actually, there are several apps available to document everything in your home. Often, when Officers take a theft or burglary report, the victim is unable to provide much information about the items taken. Taking an inventory of all the valuables in your home, or stored elsewhere, can be helpful for several reasons. If the item is stolen, it will enable the police to complete an accurate report and aid in returning the item if located.
Additionally, if you should ever suffer a loss due to fire, water damage or severe storm, your inventory will help the insurance company confirm the value of your damaged belongings. Some suggestions:

Consider using an app which allows you to take photos and document details, including serial numbers. Ensure you can access the data a second way in case your phone/tablet is stolen or damaged. Your current insurance company may have an app available to you, or there are several third party apps.
Take photos of items and photos of the serial numbers and/or other distinguishing features.
Document the value of items. Have jewelry and similar items appraised.
If you choose to keep your inventory in paper form, consider having several copies in different locations, one at work, one in your car, etc. Just in case one is damaged or lost.
A winter reminder: Do not leave your vehicle running unattended with the keys inside. Although, auto thieves really appreciate it, insurance companies and law enforcement do not. Plus, it is against City ordinance. By remembering this, you reduce the likelihood your vehicle will get stolen and you won’t get a ticket for leaving it running with the keys in it.
