WHILS WELCOME “A woman’s health is her capital”, Harriet Beecher Stowe Inspiration can come from many places. History has a way of leaving wonderful legacies to guide a vision. The courageous change agent, Harriet Beecher Stowe said, ”A woman’s health is her capital.” This critical truth is an impetus for this program. Welcome and thank you for attending the Women’s Healthcare Innovation & Leadership Showcase (WHILS), presented to you by the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA) Metro Chapter. The WHILS is intended to increase awareness and invoke change in advancing women’s healthcare needs. As an organization that strives to advance women’s leadership in the healthcare arena, the HBA is uniquely positioned to be a strong voice of advocacy for change in women’s healthcare. The quality of a woman’s health impacts her capacity for self-fulfillment and for supporting the needs of others. Consider the fact that women impact over 80% of the healthcare decisions made in US households. Substantial progress has been made over the last 20 years to address the specific requirements of women’s disease and healthcare, however much more is needed to address women’s healthcare in the context of not only biological differences, but the social, environmental, economic, and gender aspects to be truly effective. Innovation can be accelerated through sharing, comparing, and contrasting diverse views, expertise, and experiences. We have assembled stakeholders from across the healthcare landscape because we know this diversity of thought is important to create change and supports a woman’s ability to maximize her capital. My dream for this event is that everyone attending tonight will walk away with new inspiration, with new ideas, with expanded personal connections, and even potential partners to leverage in the quest to drive innovation and advancement in women’s healthcare. Parties which in times past may have seemed unlikely collaborators are now offering each other critical complimentary expertise and resources, working together to bring new and more elegant solutions. We are all connected in our mission to advance women’s healthcare, as we all have important women in our lives for whom we wish the best. This connection gives us a collective mission to ensure that a woman’s capital is increased by focusing on improving her health. In closing, I extend my deepest gratitude to our event Founding Partners, Exhibitors, Sponsors, Panelists, and Advertisers, without whom this event could not have occurred. Also, a bow to the WHILS Executive Committee members: Shruti Devi, Eve Dryer, Ronke Ekwensi, Lorraine Gaglioti, Ananth Gundapuneedi, Karen Scollick, and Heather Van Ness, who have worked tirelessly in building this event over many months. It has been an honor to work with such a gifted team. Regards, Adrienne Robinson, Event Chair HBA Metro Chapter Director, Merck, Business Affairs & Alliance Management

Exhibitors Cancer Screening Initiative Communicating the Value of Routine Screenings to Novartis Associates Novartis recognizes that an employee health initiative is in line with the company vision to discover, develop and successfully market innovative products to prevent and cure diseases, to ease suffering and to enhance the quality of life. Furthermore, the commitment to fight cancer in the work place is recognized by its CEO Gold Standard Accreditation. In 2008, this dedication resulted in an initiative to address the cancer screening rates of employees. Focus groups were conducted to understand barriers to cancer screening. A cross-functional team was formed and strategy implemented to increase employee cancer screenings. The campaign started within the U.S. Headquarters group. This rapidly expanded to an effort reaching across all Novartis divisions in the U.S., approximately 30,000 employees. The strategy includes a three pillar approach: inform, facilitate, and endorse the screenings of cancers that, if detected early, can have an improved outcome. For women, this includes breast, cervical, colon, and skin cancer screenings. A comprehensive communications campaign was launched and evolves each year. It includes a diverse population of Novartis associates and their significant others relating the reasons why they get screened. On site screenings, home colon test kits, referrals to local community health facilities are organized in various locations to facilitate screenings. Leaders across divisions have endorsed screenings in communications. One of Purdue’s products, a treatment for patients with insomnia characterized by middle-of-the-night awakenings and difficulty returning sleep, was the first hypnotic with sex-specific dosing instructions. These instructions highlight the importance of understanding unique physiological features between women and men that may impact the treatment of many disorders.

Sex & Gender Women’s Health Collaborative Each of us, without exception, has a sex that is influenced by gender roles and the world around us. To fully meet women’s health care needs, the Sex & Gender Women’s Health Collaborative (SGWHC) advances the need to broaden our approach to clinical care and medical education by fostering consideration of both biological (sex) and psychosocial (gender) factors, and the interaction between the two. Bringing a sex and gender perspective to medical education and clinical practice assures a comprehensive understanding and sensitivity that ultimately will improve medical care for all. The SGWHC goals are to: • E stablish and expand a comprehensive, digitally accessible repository of evidence based, sex and gender specific, resources by partnering with medical institutions, professional organizations, government entities, educators, and others. • Promote the impact that sex and gender have on individual health status, clinical outcomes, and healthcare systems - Facilitate inclusion of sex and gender sensitivity in medical curricula and the training of future physicians and health professionals.
