6TH ANNUAL HEALTH & SAFETY CO-ORDINATORS CONFERENCE On Thursday 11 July 2013, the 6th Annual Health and Safety Conference was held on the 4th floor of St Andrew's Court. The conference was a great success being attended by over 75 delegates. We would like to thank Professor Paul Hayes, for opening the conference and presenting our successful NEBOSH candidates with their scrolls; John Mitchell, Head of Health and Safety at Blake Lapthorn, for his legal update presentation; Jeremy Philpot, Estates Operations Director, for his Estates update presentation. Part of the conference was a mini trade fair during lunch time, which was attended by Shaw City, Arco, Right Management, Hygiene Handle, Hampshire Fire and Rescue, Hampshire Police, the Energy and Environmental Team and Equality and Diversity. We would like to extend our particular thanks to Shaw City who very kind contributed toward the cost of lunch; Arco who were extremely generous with their goodies and finally to Specsavers who as well as providing merchandise kindly donated a voucher as well. The voucher was awarded to Christina Scott, together with the “Health & Safety University Challenge Shield” for winning the quiz. Examples of feedback received to date include, “Thought it

was very well organised and put together, good selection of trade stalls.” “Thank you for a well organised conference and I look forward to next years!” “I think the legal update would be useful for heads of departments.” We will be sending reminders chasing outstanding feedback. Please see the website for more information.

FIRE SAFETY Please visit the fire safety pages of our website as this information has updated. We would particularly like to remind you that as per the Fire Safety Policy and Procedures, Fire Drills should be organised twice a year for each building. We have slightly amended the Fire Evacuation Record to request that copies are sent to Estates and the Health & Safety Office and also added a line where the Maximo number for any remedial work can be recorded. As previously, a copy of this completed form should also be retained in the Building Fire Log Book. Please contact the Health & Safety Office if you have any queries or require any clarification. We have also recently published new Building Evacuation Notices. Now we have produced the notices we will be able to pursue our aim to have these displayed on all screens in teaching spaces.

WELL-BEING UPDATE The Well-Being and Engagement Steering Group continues to meet. The Well-Being webpages are now live and it is hoped to publish a monthly update via Staff Essentials News.

NEWS FROM THE GREEN TEAM ISO 14001 audits for September “Our third set of ISO 14001 environmental audits will take place in September, when external auditors visit University buildings (scheduled at random) to ensure we meet our environmental responsibilities. ISO 14001 is an international standard for environmental management, and exists to help us: 1. minimize how our operations negatively affect the environment (i.e. cause adverse changes to air, water, or land); 2. comply with applicable laws, regulations, and other environmentally oriented requirements; 3. show continuous improvement in points 1. and 2. above. Relevant staff have already been briefed, so there’s no need to do anything except follow procedures in your area as normal.” Ian McCormack - Energy & Environmental Manager
