It is totally normal to feel overwhelmed while at University - balancing study, work and life can be hard! LJMU’s Student Advice and Wellbeing Services are here to help. Throughout the year our Counselling and Wellbeing Services and our Student Engagement team will be running a range of workshops, projects and activities designed to improve your wellbeing and ensure you get the most from your time here at LJMU. Whether you feel homesick, want to learn some new coping skills or need help in dealing with change, it doesn’t matter if you are a new student or studying a PhD, there is something here to support you and enable you to have a better student experience… Counselling and Wellbeing The Counselling Service provides free counselling for Liverpool John Moores University students. Mindfulness training for students gives you tools to help you remain calm and be able to focus more consistently in the face of demands and pressure. It does this by helping you to pay attention to the present moment through breathing and mindfulness practices including, scanning the body, meditation, eating and movement these practices increase awareness of present moment experiencing so as to reduce stress and anxiety and boost levels of concentration. Settling into University isn’t always easy. Often it’s your first time living away from home and leaving behind those home comforts can be difficult. Homesickness is more common than you may think and there are lots of great tips and advice we can give you to make managing homesickness that little bit easier.

Following on from the above this course will focus on Mindfulness of the breath, Mindfulness Meditation, Body Awareness through the practice of yoga postures and the Mindfulness body scan. This is a series of 4 sessions to help your understanding of the physical and psychological aspects of anxiety, identifying triggers and lifestyle pressures. The sessions will explain panic attacks, and consider negative v positive self-management strategies to provide you with techniques to help you learn to manage anxiety more effectively.

Many students are required to do presentations during the course of their academic study at university. Sometimes in groups and sometimes alone, presentations can sometimes be a challenge. Procrastination is a difficult issue for many students - putting off until tomorrow what you could do today. This workshop will give you insights into why you procrastinate, how you procrastinate and provide some helpful hints and strategies as to how to prevent procrastination.

Wellbeing Projects at LJMU LJMU Community Choir When: Every Monday during term-time. Cuppa and chat at 5.00, singing from 5.30 – 7.00pm Where: The Moot Room, (Room 125), 1st floor, John Foster Building, Mount Pleasant, Liverpool L3 5UZ Get the happiness and harmonies flowing! This choir is open to both staff and students and is an informal, fun group that aims to encourage wellbeing through singing together in a group. Singing is good for mental and physical health, lifting moods, alleviating stress and improving breathing. The group is open to both students and staff, and you don’t have to be a great singer to join in - just come along for an enjoyable experience and to meet new people. The choir sings a range of styles from Metallica to Motown, so there’s something for everyone! Your first session is free. Then it costs £3 per session for staff and £2 for students. Comedy Trust’s Feeling Funny When: Every Wednesday from 18th of October - 29th November 3.00- 5.00 pm. Where: Room 114, First Floor, LJMU Redmonds Building, Brownlow Hill, L3 5UG Over six weekly sessions, professional stand-up comedian Sam Avery will teach you the skills to write and perform your own comedy routine which will then culminate in a final showcase performance in front of a live audience. These unique comedy courses have been designed to give you an opportunity to tackle the subject of mental health in a light hearted way and in the process help to improve your mental wellbeing. Feeling Funny courses also aim to: •
Increase confidence and communication skills

Help break down the stigma of mental health being an off limits subject for men and to give information about mental health support services
