Special Programs Three Tragedies, One Goal: Emergency Preparedness On March 25, 2000, Louis Acompora, a 14-year-old lacrosse goalie and honor student, died when a lacrosse ball struck his chest. As a result of their tragic loss, his parents, Karen and John, have been relentless in their mission to educate the public about the importance of CPR and AED Training. On October 6, 2009, 17-year-old Dominic Murray died from SCA during a basketball game. His mother, Melinda, established the DomHeart21 Foundation in his memory to focus on increasing awareness of SCA affecting our youth and the need for CPR/AED Training. On September 17, 2010, the St. Francis Hospital community was saddened by the death of Nancy Kostel-Donlon, R.N., the Coordinator of the St. Francis Stroke Center, who was cheering on the sidelines for her daughter’s soccer team when she collapsed. Nancy was an advocate for community-based CPR and stroke education, and participated in teaching various programs, including the Louis Acompora Foundation classes. Three tragedies. One goal. To honor these victims, St. Francis Hospital is committed to educating volunteer coaches, youth group leaders, senior group leaders, athletes, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts (minimum age 11), and any community group members wanting to learn how to handle an emergency, Stroke Recognition, CPR, and AED use. Center for Advanced Cardiac Therapeutics Programs The Center for Advanced Cardiac Therapeutics The Heart Failure Center for Advanced Cardiac Therapeutics (CACT) offers a comprehensive approach to the diagnosis and management of all stages of heart failure. Physicians with specialized training work closely with an interdisciplinary team to provide all-inclusive care to this high-risk patient population. Our team includes board certified cardiologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, and dietitians, specially trained in this subspecialty of cardiovascular disease. CPETT Cardiopulmonary exercise tolerance testing (CPETT) is a “state-of-the-art” marker for outcome in patients with heart failure. Peak oxygen consumption (peak VO2) and other variables determined by CPETT’s are used to quantify exercise capacity and to demonstrate whether exercise limitation is indeed cardiac in nature. CPETT is one of the principal tests used to assess the risk/benefit ratio of advanced therapies such as left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation or heart transplantation in patients with advanced heart failure. For additional information, please call (516) 629-2090.

EECP Therapy Enhanced External Counterpulsation Therapy (EECP) is a noninvasive treatment modality for patients suffering with disabling angina and anginal equivalents. EECP therapy is approved by the FDA for use in the treatment of angina. After an initial clinical evaluation, treatments are administered for one hour each day, five days a week, for a total of 35 hours. For over 30 years, scientific research has shown patients who undergo this course of therapy experience: • Decreased need for use of nitroglycerin • Significant reduction in the frequency of chest pain/pressure • Improved exercise tolerance and duration • Improved quality of life St. Francis Hospital is one of the few hospitals in the region to offer this treatment option to their cardiac patients. For more information, please call (516) 629-2090.

Heart Failure Research The CACT Program is actively participating in clinical research projects, including international, multi-center trials related to heart failure. Some patients may qualify for inclusion. For additional information, please call (516) 629-2090.

The Brave Hearts organization meets monthly to enjoy a featured speaker on health related and miscellaneous topics of interest. This friendly group also offers a full calendar of social events that includes: a golf outing, fishing trip, annual King & Queen of Hearts DinnerDance, annual picnic, day trips, and maintains a telephone network of support to connect individuals with Brave Heart members who have experienced the same type of procedure. Patient Safety Tip: Don’t Smoke! Probably one of the single best health choices you can make for life is not to smoke, and if you do smoke, it’s time to quit. Here’s why: • Thousands of Americans die every year from smoking-related diseases, including those who have heart attacks • Cigarettes contain at least 43 cancer-causing chemicals • Smoking during pregnancy is responsible for 20 to 30 percent of all low-birth-weight babies • Secondhand smoke is very dangerous, especially for children – it can cause serious cases of respiratory infections Health benefits of quitting smoking: • Hands and feet become warmer from improved circulation • Blood pressure and pulse rate are lowered • Mouth and hair no longer smell of smoke • Senses of taste and smell improve • Cough decreases • Stamina increases • Improved self-image • Risk of all diseases caused by smoking is reduced – emphysema, heart attacks, and cancers of all types
