Hedgehogs There are 14 species of hedgehog. Some have hair; the others have hard spines. An adult hedgehog is about 25 centimetres long and weighs about 2 kilograms. Hedgehogs mate in spring when the temperature is over 10°C, and in late summer. Babies are born about 35 days later, four to five at a time. The babies are blind at first, but after a month they can leave their nest with their mother. Hedgehogs in the wild can live for five years. Hedgehogs sleep all winter, so they must eat enough in the summer and autumn to last until the spring. To survive the winter, young hedgehogs must weigh at least 500 grams.

European hedgehogs look for food at night. They go from garden to garden – often three kilometres in one night – and eat up to 200 grams of food. They like fruit or vegetables, but their favourite food is insects, birds’ eggs or small birds. When the sun comes out, the hedgehog goes back to its nest and sleeps until it is dark again. People like hedgehogs in their gardens because they eat insects that are bad for plants. If you make a small hole in your garden fence, hedgehogs can come and go when they want. Hedgehogs roll into a ball to protect themselves from their enemies – foxes, birds and other wild animals. But their biggest enemy is people: cars often hit hedgehogs or they die when people work in the garden.
