Music in church life can sometimes seem like a blessing and a curse in equal measure! It can be a wonderful tool for gospel work, or it can spread confusion and cause division. How can church leaders make the most of music? We’ll start in Ephesians 5, exploring the place and power of music in church life. Then we’ll examine the crucial relationship between leaders and musicians, looking at how they can work in effective partnership to lead music in the congregation. Finally, there will be an opportunity to take two varied seminars from a choice of five.
Speakers: Andy Fenton is Senior Minister of Christ Church Earlsfield, and heads up the national network Music Ministry UK. He is familiar to many through his musical leadership at the London Men’s and Women’s Conventions. Richard Simpkin is Music Co-ordinator at St Helen’s Bishopsgate, and has a wider ministry among music professionals and in training musicians from a range of different churches.
Seminars (choice of two) Effective music in a church with few musicians What are we to do when musicians seem few and far between? Practical advice from Richard Simpkin. Managing musical change in a church Musical change can easily become a church battleground. Andy Fenton looks at how we can lead effectively through necessary change. Music and the emotions Music has a great power to stir people’s emotions. Nick McQuaker looks at how we can harness this in a biblical way in today’s culture, avoiding the dangers of emotional coldness and/or manipulation. Music for the teenage generation What is the musical world like for today’s teenagers? How has the digital age changed our attitude to music? What is a biblical response? Ben Lucas and Chris Steynor explore the issues. Partnership in service planning So what are we going to sing on Sunday? Chris Edwards looks at how pastors and musicians can work together effectively on service planning, and build and maintain a repertoire of high quality songs.
