Musical Leaders’ Workshop
with Paula Davis
Schedule & Class Descriptions Welcome and Introduction
Conducting Skills
• Thursday 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. •
• Thursday 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. •
Kick-off the Musical Leaders’ Workshop with a discussion about the philosophy of providing support to your chorus and director. Connect and share ideas with other assistant directors, section leaders and music team members who are serving their choruses.
Learn basic and advanced conducting gestures needed to run a sectional or chorus rehearsal. Volunteers from the class will have an opportunity to serve as singers in the demo chorus to create a real-world sectional/chorus rehearsal scenario. In this master class setting, 10-15 participants will be selected to direct the group and the instructor will then offer feedback and coaching to address their gesture and techniques. Immediate feedback and coaching on strengthening conducting skills will be offered in this master class setting.
Rehearsal Preparation • Thursday 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. • Explore the purpose of warmups and how to teach vocal exercises that clarify the following skill areas: breathing, posture, phonation, resonance, articulation and intonation. You will learn how to best address the basics of good vocal production and musicianship, as a musical leader serving your chorus, during this practical, interactive class session.
Providing Peer-Singer Support • Thursday 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. • One of the primary responsibilities for musical leaders is to provide ongoing peer-singer support such as PVIs, one-on-one tutoring for learning music, and performing vocal evaluations. In this hands-on session, you will learn techniques to expand your skills in these three areas as well as have the opportunity to give and receive a PVI.
Lunch • Thursday 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. •
Analytical Listening Skills • Thursday 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. • Learn the key elements to analyzing and assessing what you hear when you’re rehearsing your singers. By listening to audio examples of choruses at every level, participants will identify issues such as balance, blend, rhythmic timing, tempo, sync, tuning and phrasing. Then, discover techniques for addressing identified issues with specific activities or exercises.
Conducting a Sectional Rehearsal • Thursday 4:45 – 6:00 p.m. • Wrap up the workshop by learning and then applying techniques to plan and deliver a successful sectional rehearsal. Recreate a typical sectional rehearsal by serving as singers in a demo chorus. Each voice part will then be rehearsed for 15-minutes by three participants, while receiving feedback from the instructor and learners.
