The Theatre on Chester is proudly sponsored by

In 2014 we challenge our audiences with cultural and societal values; how important is loyalty, morality, money, friendship, and education for its own worth not just for results. This year The Theatre on Chester offers you two Australian and one British play that deals with these conflicting values – the classic The One Day of the Year by Alan Seymour, The History Boys by the award winning Alan Bennett and from our most prolific playwright David Williamson - Money and Friends. The Theatre on Chester values excellence in Community Theatre and we also value your support as a subscriber. Our 2014 subscription price is excellent value. For only $57 you get preferential seating for the three plays, free programs and complimentary refreshments at interval; it is in fact, the best value in town!

PLAY 2. The History Boys by Alan Bennett has won every major award on the West End and Broadway. Set in an English grammar school in the 1980’s, we meet a bunch of bright, funny senior boys who are pursuing the usual: sex, sport, and a place at a good university. For the old-school humanist and eccentric teacher Hector, literature is a preparation for life and he engages students with culture and knowledge for its own sake. He is replaced by the up-and-coming rationalist Irwin who gives way to the results-driven education that we see today and breaks knowledge down into a set of bullet points that may come up on an exam paper. As one of the boys puts it: “Do you want us to be thoughtful or do you want us to be smart?” Directed by Carla Moore

Location The Theatre on Chester is centrally located at the corner of Chester and Oxford Streets, Epping and is an easy 5 minutes walk from Epping railway station and bus terminal. There are a number of local restaurants and cafés offering a variety of meals to suit all budgets. Please note that there is only street parking, and those arriving by car should allow sufficient time to park in order to be on time for the production. GOOD VALUE(S)

Is Anzac Day just an excuse for “one long grog-up” or is it a day when we as a Nation reflect on those who have paid the ultimate price? When Hughie Cook helps his girlfriend Jan write a newspaper article critical of Anzac Day, it sets up conflict with his father Alf, an ex-servicemen. This play questions the institution of Anzac Day, the sacred cow among Australian annual celebrations. It is the genuine nature of the characters however, that gives the play its memorable qualities: Alf, the nobody who becomes a somebody on this day of days; Mum, the anchor of the family; Hughie, their son, with all the uncertainties and rebelliousness of youth; and Wacka, the Anzac, with his simple, healing wisdom. Directed by Kaye Lopez

In this Australian classic, Hughie Cook, a young university student, helps his girlfriend Jan to write an adverse newspaper article about the Anzac Day memorial celebrations. This sparks family conflict between Hughie and his father Alf who is an ex-servicemen. Is this a day of “one long grog-up” or a day to reflect on loyalty to a Nation? The play gradually uncovers the strands of prejudice and ignorance and explores the universal theme of father/son conflict, against the background of the beery haze and the heady, nostalgic sentimentality of Anzac Day, the sacred cow among Australian annual celebrations - the one day of the year.
