Brian Gardner
SPEAKER Brian Gardner, Editor of Business Research The Economist Brian Gardner is an editor of business research at The Economist. His prior work includes managing the development of the New York region’s catastrophic emergency response plan for the electric sector. Gardner has done research with the Joint U.S.-China collaboration on clean energy, examining best practices in sustainability. He holds a master’s degree in urban planning from Columbia University, specializing in energy networks and infrastructure development. His master’s thesis was on investigated financing models for energy efficiency investments. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in international relations from American University in Washington, D.C.
Vatsal Bhatt
PANELIST Vatsal Bhatt, Senior Policy Advisor Brookhaven National Lab Vatsal Bhatt works on energy and environment systems and policy analysis and international collaboration at the Brookhaven National Laboratory of the United States Department of Energy (USDOE). On various national and international assignments, he helps the USDOE, the U.S. Department of State (USDOS), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, foundations and international governments. Bhatt is the coordinator of the USDOE’s U.S.-India-China Cities Partnership for sharing best practices and technologies in energy and environment and serves as a senior policy advisor to the USDOSmanaged U.S.-China EcoPartnerships Secretariat. He provides USDOE technical assistance to partners in India and China on developing net-zero buildings and near-zero communities. Bhatt assisted USDOE analysis on energy for the President’s State of the Union Address in January 2006. He is a lead author of the U.S. Global Change Research Program’s first-ever assessment of the “Effects of Climate Change on Energy Production and Use in the United States.” Bhatt has a master’s degree in environmental planning from the State University of New York at Albany and a master’s degree in housing planning and bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the CEPT University in Ahmedabad, India.

PANELIST Deane M. Evans, FAIA, Registered Architect, Director Center for Building Knowledge of New Jersey Institute of Technology Deane M. Evans is a registered architect and currently directs the Center for Building Knowledge (CBK) at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He has more than 30 years experience – in both the private and public sectors – in architectural design, construction technology and building performance; including jobs as: senior principal at Steven Winter Associates, a building systems consulting firm; vice president for research at the American Institute of Architects in Washington, D.C.; and as the founding director of the Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH) program at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. In his current position, Evans directs CBK, a multi-disciplinary research and technical assistance center focused on improving the performance of buildings and communities. He also is involved with the creation and dissemination of online education with a particular emphasis on energy efficient, high performance building design and construction practices. Evans is a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and currently serves as the vice chair of the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University and a master’s degree in architecture from Columbia.
Greg Hale
PANELIST Greg Hale, Senior Financial Policy Specialist Natural Resources Defense Council Center for Market Innovation Greg Hale is a senior financial policy specialist focused on developing a large-scale market for energy efficiency building retrofits. He works closely with many financial institutions, governmental entities, real estate owners and managers, energy services and technology companies, and non-profit organizations to help build the energy efficiency retrofit market in the commercial and multi-family residential property sectors. His work also includes an emphasis on energy efficiency leasing practices. Hale is a founding board member of the New York City Energy Efficiency Corporation and serves on the steering committee of the PACENow Coalition. He frequently speaks at national conferences on energy efficiency retrofit and finance issues. Previously, Hale spent 17 years in the real estate industry, first as a real estate lawyer at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom and then as co-owner and general counsel of Cirque Property L.C., a real estate investment company. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and The University of Michigan Law School.

Prior to joining TIAA-CREF, Meaney was with Morgan Stanley, in 1999 serving as vice president and head of property management for the Americas. In 2000, he was promoted to executive director and given additional responsibility for transportation services. In 2002, Meaney assumed the role of global director of corporate security. In addition to this position, he served as chair of the global business continuity planning and information security council, which oversees all Morgan Stanley Companies. In 2003, he was promoted to managing director. Before working at Morgan Stanley, Meaney was vice president of security and services for The Durst Organization. He served on the Realty Advisory Board on Labor Relations, Building Owners and Managers Association, Real Estate Board of New York, and the Avenue of the Americas Association. He is currently a board member of the U.S. State Department, Overseas Security Advisory Council. He also is a member of ISMA, where he assumes a position in teaching for the Georgetown ISMA, ASIS, The Bankers and Brokers Roundtable and several other New York-based Security and Real Estate groups. He serves on the boards of Autism Speaks, The Association for the Advancement of the Blind and Retarded and The Torch Foundation. Penafiel, CAE, Vice President, Advocacy Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International Karen Penafiel joined the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International in December 1989 and serves as vice president of the advocacy division of the association. In this capacity, Penafiel leads BOMA’s federal and state advocacy programs. As the association’s chief lobbyist, she works with Congress and federal agencies on a wide range of issues affecting the commercial real estate industry.

Penafiel has taken the lead on energy and sustainability issues for BOMA for the past decade and is the author of BOMA International’s two guidance documents on electricity deregulation, Power Shopping and Power Shopping II. She is currently leading the association’s market transformation efforts and helped develop BOMA’s Green Lease Guide. He is responsible for creating service offerings and platforms and deploying methods for effectively leveraging service growth strategies. Ronsivalli is active in the energy and facilities management community, serving as an adjunct faculty member in the continuing education program at Northern Essex Community College. He also is a long-time participating member in the Association of Energy Engineers and the Boston Chapter of the U.S. Green Buildings Council. Prior to joining Trane, Ronsivalli was an acknowledged leader in the development of operations and maintenance of building systems and energy management systems, managing a building staff of 25 operations personnel in the Boston area. He earned a master’s degree in business administration from New Hampshire College and a Bachelor of Science in engineering from Northeastern University.
