ABSTRACT Some years ago three universities: the Fachhochschule Reutlingen (Germany), Shenkar College (Israel) and the then Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science (now Philadelphia University, USA) developed a common curriculum, which permits the students to graduate in Global Textile Marketing, spending one semester in each country. It has been expected that students trained at various institutions in different countries, thus experiencing different cultural influences, would be better prepared for the future role as managers in the increasingly globalised textile and garment industry. Another similar initiative in international higher education in textiles is the ETEAM (European Master's Degree in Advanced Textile Engineering), a two-year training programme at European level in the field of textile engineering, coordinated by the Department of Textiles of the University of Ghent. All major European universities or institutions for higher education offering textile education participate in the programme. A detailed study was prepared for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization presuming that the comparison of the different courses offered at some of the major textile and garment technology and design educational institutions of developed and developing countries should help in creating other global courses in textile and garment higher education. This paper summarises the major findings. In the first part of this paper we present a review of the current thinking on international higher education, with particular reference to the challenges higher education has to face in the globalised world; while in the second part we present a survey of textile universities and colleges, compare the characteristic curricula in textile technology, science and engineering and discuss international organisations and programs in textile education. 1
