“There is no common religion higher than human service. To work for the common good is the greatest creed.” — Albert Schweitzer The PANPHA Distinguished Service Awards were created to honor those special individual and group efforts that exceed the already high standard of commitment and service that is common among PANPHA members. These exceptional individuals give their time, talents, and abundant energy to their facilities, and the field of aging in a way that visibly shows the commitment and dedication alive in their hearts. Please join PANPHA in honoring the outstanding achievements of ten individuals and two group programs that have contributed to and enhanced our shared mission and encourage us toward finer visions for an even greater future.

Marvin Mashner
William J. Davies
ACTS Retirement-Life Communities, Inc., West Point
Phoebe Ministries, Allentown
In his role as Chief Operating Officer for Phoebe Ministries, Bill Davies creative energy, operational know-how and passion for mentoring remain unmatched. Over the course of his fourteen-year employ, he has led Phoebe through a five million dollar financial turnaround – taking the organization from a position of questionable viability to a thriving entity poised to meet the future. His steadfast leadership has guided the course of operational improvement and innovative program development for Phoebe Ministries’ campuses. Through extensive research in best practices and building design, Bill repositioned and restructured the physical living environment on Phoebe campuses, while introducing new resident-centered care programming and staff education covering innovations in pharmacy, dementia care, wound management, and Parkinson’s care through the use of telemedicine. As a licensed physical therapist and clinician, Bill recognized the value of and worked to build partnerships with local hospitals and physicians to enhance resident care and reduce hospital admissions. Under his guidance, the Phoebe Ministries Physician’s Advisory Council – which meets to develop clinical protocols and study innovations in gerontology – was formed, as well as a full scale Geriatric Care Management Program devoted to providing support services to individuals allowing them to live independently in their homes. For his dedicated service and progressive leadership, PANPHA is delighted to name William J. Davies as Leader of the Year.
Throughout the span of his forty-year career, Marvin Mashner has made outstanding contributions in terms of leadership and service to the field of not-for-profit aging services. As President & CEO of ACTS Retirement-Life Communities, he was responsible for leading the organization through $500 million in new development, renovations and expansions; growing the organization to 23 communities in 8 states and firmly establishing its identity as a widely recognized and respected leader in senior care. Extending to the federal level, Marvin’s commitment to improving the lives of our nation’s senior population led to his selection as a delegate to the White House Conference on Aging in 2005 – making recommendations to the President and Congress to help guide national aging policies – and continues today as a frequent media commentator and industry authority on issues important to older adults. Throughout the course of his impressive career, Marvin has consistently served on numerous state and national health care boards and committees, as well as in various leadership capacities with community organizations, social service agencies, and adult rehabilitation facilities. His ongoing stewardship and lifetime of commitment to others are examples to future generations of leaders. In honor of his integrity and pursuit of excellence on behalf of ACTS and for life-long advocacy to improve the quality of care for our nation’s seniors, PANPHA is pleased to name Marvin Mashner as the recipient of our 2011 Paul P. Haas Lifetime Achievement Award.

Carolyn Treadway
Timothy M. Inglis
Dunwoody Village, Newtown Square
Presbyterian SeniorCare, Oakmont
As Director of Recreation, Carolyn Treadway has been instrumental in contributing to a richer quality of life for the residents of Dunwoody Village. A natural and charismatic leader, she is at the top of her game every day – motivating and educating her staff to perform at a high level no matter what the task or activity. Leading by example, she encourages her employees to establish personal connections with residents in an effort to incorporate and deliver recreational programs – over 500 a month – to meet each individual’s needs and interests. In doing so, she has influenced other departments to adopt a more patientoriented delivery of care, ultimately changing the culture and daily expectations of Dunwoody Village. Not only is she a role model for her own staff, but to those in other departments. As an active participant of Dunwoody’s CCRC Quality Management Team and the organization’s Culture Change Initiative, Carolyn is not afraid to speak up when she notices an area that requires improvement and put forth ideas that will contribute to new best practices. An inspiration and blessing to the employees with whom she works and the residents under her care, PANPHA is pleased to recognize Carolyn Treadway as Facilitator of the Year.
Throughout his twenty-one years of service to the board of Presbyterian SeniorCare, Tim Inglis’ diligence and expertise have helped to guide the organization through a period of unprecedented growth. His involvement in the transformation of culture, innovation and strategic thinking at the board level has assisted in facilitating the organization’s evolution from a handful of facilities to an Aging Services Network of approximately 50 senior living and care communities across southwestern Pennsylvania. Thanks to the sharing of his financial background and private foundation experience, Tim’s efforts have not only bolstered Presbyterian SeniorCare’s financial performance, but have led to a higher quality of service to residents. Consistently going above and beyond the call to assist in whatever capacity needed, Tim’s service on countless committees and task forces throughout the years – always with the same careful attention to detail and commitment to the organization’s mission – has resulted in an additional positive impact across a broad number of areas. Not only has Tim supported Presbyterian SeniorCare through his financial and strategic expertise, but also as a generous donor supporting a myriad of events, campaigns, and special funds, and even coming up with creative ideas to inspire others to give. For his tireless contributions of time and effort to Presbyterian SeniorCare to enhance the lives of countless seniors, PANPHA is privileged to honor Timothy M. Inglis as Trustee of the Year.

Stu Landis
Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community, Manheim
Landis Homes, Lititz
Stu Landis’s career path has taken him from his initial role as a staff member of the Maintenance Department at Landis Homes twenty years ago to the organization’s highly esteemed Director of Information Technology. With a heart and passion for learning and the propensity for using that information for the benefit of individuals and to advance the organization at large, Stu’s contributions to Landis Homes have been invaluable. Inquisitive and always eager to move on to the next opportunity, Stu quickly moved through the ranks from Assistant Maintenance Supervisor and on to comprise the organization’s sole Information Technology department. Within his current role as director, he has mentored and grown the IT department to a staff of four and established the organization as an early adopter of technologies such as campuswide wireless phone systems, WiFi networks, and other infrastructures to support staff and residents. Not only has Stu been an active contributor to the IT needs of Landis Homes, but supportive of other communities in his willingness to share Landis’ technology experience and offer IT support. In honor of his commitment to personal growth, and progressive application of technology for improving lives, PANPHA is delighted to name Stu Landis as the recipient of this year’s Professional Advancement Award.
Mount Hope was a failing nursing home about to close when Joe Mraz signed on as Administrator. Leaving the world of for-profit nursing homes, Joe came to Mount Hope for its mission statement of ‘offering hope and serving the local community and beyond through the provision of quality, loving care in an affordable, Christian environment’. With forty years of knowledge as an administrator and experience with making culture change happen, it meant only good changes were in store for Mount Hope. Adhering strictly to the organization’s mission statement, Joe did not waiver in continuing to bring in low income and poor residents that no other nursing homes would take. When staff would ask how they could afford to take the chance of caring for more people with no funds, Joe would say that ‘as long as we honor God’s mission, God will honor us and keep us afloat.’ Joe worked tirelessly to try and obtain a HUD 202 affordable senior housing complex to offer hope to the area’s low income seniors. When this option wasn’t viable, he pursued the tax credit side. Leaving no stone unturned, he met with many banks as well as Department of Agriculture UDS and County Officials. Aware of Mount Hope’s great need, Joe was also relentless in his petitioning of local congressmen and community leaders for support, regularly inviting them out to see what Mount Hope’s mission was about and staying in frequent contact in regard to Mount Hope’s needs. In recognition of his perseverance and commitment to fostering an environment of love and care to serve Pennsylvania’s needs-based population, PANPHA is pleased to honor Joseph Mraz as the recipient of our Outstanding Advocacy Award.

Elisabeth McCain
White Horse Village, Newtown Square
Phoebe Home, Allentown
Elisabeth McCain is truly an angel working to make others happy. For her, volunteerism is not a hobby or activity; but a lifestyle. As a resident of White Horse Village since 1991, she is on the go daily from the time she gets up until her head hits the pillow assisting residents and staff in any way she is able. From sitting with end of life residents at the community’s Health Care Center, to recycling and sewing old towels into bibs for skilled nursing care, to helping with parties and special events, Elisabeth’s warm and enthusiastic presence is always felt. As a nature lover and avid walker, Elisabeth can also be seen conducting regular group exercise classes for fellow residents and planting flowers in the common area outside of her apartment building. Of German descent, coming to the United States from Slovakia in the 50s, she is renowned throughout the facility and beyond for her fabulous baked goods – made with LOTS of rich, delicious butter – which she bakes and distributes freely. For her determination to make the world a better place by giving to others and the positive difference made to all whose lives she has touched, PANPHA is delighted to recognize Elisabeth McCain as Individual Volunteer of the Year.
Phoebe Home’s Telemedicine Project with Lehigh Valley Health Network was created to offer a better quality of care to Phoebe Home residents living with Parkinson’s disease. With over forty residents suffering from Parkinson’s, staff began to notice many were not receiving regular follow-up visits with their neurologists due to the logistical difficulties involved in outside medical appointments. Thanks to the initiative of William Davies, Chief Operating Officer for Phoebe Ministries, connections were made with the physicians at Lehigh Valley Neurology to put a facility telemedicine program – one of only two programs used by skilled nursing facilities in the country – into place. Highly successful, the program has enabled residents to receive regular remote follow-up care from a neurologist without the transportation process that a face to face visit would entail. As part of the program, family members, nurses, therapists, and the resident’s themselves are interviewed prior to individual telemedicine sessions in order to give neurologists a comprehensive picture of their progress. Outcomes have included a reduction in hospital re-admissions and overall health care costs, and improved care and outcomes for patients. The most exciting part of the program is that it can be adapted to other diagnostic specialties in the future and expanded to serve wider geographic areas with the purchase of additional telemedicine devices. In recognition of their joint initiative maximizing new technology to enhance resident care and quality of life, PANPHA is proud to name Phoebe Home’s Telemedicine Project with the Lehigh Valley Health Network as Innovator of the Year.

Sandy Crandall
Pennswood Village, Newtown
Woodcrest Villa, Lancaster
Sandy Crandall began her career as a trailblazer, graduating from the University of Pennsylvania’s first Nurse Practitioner Master’s Program. When Pennswood Village opened its doors in 1980, she was hired as their very first Nurse Practitioner and has continued to make exceptional contributions to the organization’s quality of care and residents wellbeing ever since. Described by peers as a ‘geriatric detective’, Sandy is known for collaborating with patients, physicians, physical therapists, nurses and anyone else on a patient’s health care team to find answers and improve lives. Seeing between 6-10 patients a day, she manages emergencies of every kind, as well as routine physicals, chronic conditions, interpretation of lab results, and communication and counseling to patients and their families. A skilled researcher, her efforts have supported important systems change at Pennswood including the adoption of 1.5 hours per resident for annual physicals, the switch to electronic medical records and the implementation of new best practices for bone health and fall management. Embracing the role of mentor and teacher, Sandy has also conducted numerous employee education courses and mentored Pennswood’s nursing staff in addition to many geriatric nurse practitioner students from local colleges and universities. In recognition of her exceptional commitment to the field of geriatrics, the compassionate and dedicated patient care she delivers, and the leadership and vision she has shown throughout her career, PANPHA is pleased to honor Sandy Crandall as Licensed Nursing Caregiver of the Year.
Thanks to the efforts of John and Mary Rolinc, The Marketplace at Woodcrest Villa is truly a labor of love. Not long after their move to the Woodcrest community, the Rolincs, retired global food brokers, came upon a vacant campus storefront, surveyed the space and immediately went to work on their vision to create a small community market for the benefit of residents. From basic necessities to local specialty items like baked goods and fresh fruit, The Marketplace provides residents with the option to purchase more than 500 different grocery products at reasonable prices without having to leave the comfort of their community. For residents that have difficulty walking or driving, this is a huge gift, enabling them to continue to exercise independence. Not only can people shop at the store, they can also volunteer and assist, which contributes to their well-being and sense of purpose. Since its inception in 2008, the Rolincs in partnership with 47 Marketplace volunteers have contributed in excess of 7,000 volunteer hours and raised thousands of dollars that have been reinvested back into the community, including a $10,000 donation to the benevolent care fund at Mennonite Home to assist in covering the expenses of those who have exhausted their financial resources. In celebration of their extraordinary commitment to preserving the dignity and independence of residents through the sharing of their special gifts of leadership and community, PANPHA is pleased to honor John and Mary Rolinc in care of The Marketplace as Volunteer Group of the Year.

Corrina Burkholder
Linda G. Flewelling
Landis Homes, Lititz
Kendal-Crosslands Communities, Kennett Square
Corrina Burkholder is a model of compassionate care going above and beyond the call of duty to enrich residents’ lives. Serving the seniors at Landis Homes as a certified nursing assistant and medication technician since 2007, Corrina is an inspiration to all who know her. As the Team Leader for Landis Homes Cedar Household, she is an example to the rest of her team on how to put the resident’s needs first, always thinking of ways to keep them active, happy and fulfilled. In this role, Corrina has been instrumental in moving Landis Homes Person Centered Care Initiative, “Honoring Lives’, forward. She facilitates a monthly learning circle with team members from multiple departments, suggesting ideas for special celebrations, activities, and ways to maximize and improve care. Frequently she can be seen coming in on her days off to help residents who need assistance with special projects, bestow birthday greetings, or visit those who are alone in the hospital – all with her unique brand of joy and compassion. Corrina has also extended her propensity for taking things to the next level to her own education, prompting her to participate in leadership training to further advance her knowledge and already substantial contributions. For her unwavering care, dedication and exemplary work, PANPHA is pleased to recognize Corrina Burkholder as Caregiver of the Year.
Linda Flewelling is a living example of how the special contributions of one individual can truly make a difference within an organization and the greater community. As Manager of Education and Staff Training for Kendal-Crosslands Communities, Linda has a special gift for integrating staff education and training with resident input and involvement to create an enhanced sense of community. Willing to take the lead in organizing any event or project she thinks will benefit Kendal residents, staff or the community at large, she is always on the go exceeding the expectations of her role without any thought of personal recognition for her outstanding work. Among her many accomplishments include: the initiation and launch of a Vocational Exploration Program providing opportunities for local high school students with disabilities to partner with Kendal to experience mentoring and on the job training; the establishment of a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Sharing in conjunction with the outside community generating over 200 volunteer opportunities for Kendal residents and staff; and annual participation in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, enabling staff and residents to work together in a team setting toward a common goal. In honor of her selfless service and work to connect and enrich the lives of others, PANPHA is proud to honor Linda Flewelling as Staff Member of the Year.
