Horizon 2020 Space Work Programme 2018-2020 Stakeholder consultation
Introduction of your company • Dr William Roberts, Applications Manager, NSL • NSL is a UK based high-tech small-medium sized enterprise. • GNSS technology and application developer • NSL specialize in the use of satellite navigation through shaping the use of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) within critical markets such as those that: – directly affect the safety of citizens – are key in terms of national security – affect the way business is conducted. Critical Infrastructure and Services
What emerging applications in your area need to be addressed in the next Work Programme? • Development of tools/techniques to carry systematic risk assessments of critical infrastructures and services that depend on GNSS – Quantitative assessment (€€€) of risks will enable infrastructure operators and service providers to develop business cases for further investment in GNSS solutions (eg OS-A, CS, PRS)
• Development of new solutions (incorporating GNSS) that address the identified risks to reduce to them to acceptable levels at an acceptable price point. – New solutions, utilising new GNSS services need to address the market needs and must deliver a value which is affordable.
• Further development of GNSS authentication concepts across the market sectors
What technology innovation or other factor will influence your areas in coming years? • Technology innovation – GNSS authentication services and innovative uses of PRS – Ubiquitous RTK/PPP location (with integrity) • Bring high accuracy into consumer applications (eg Android N)
– Integration with other non-GNSS and other technologies • Cloud, big data, analtyics
• Other factors – Evolving threats to GNSS (emergence of low-cost tools) will require new solutions (eg 600€ spoofer) – Increased Autonomy (vehicles, drones) will require safety and security – IoT sensors within regulated/policy/governmental applications and markets will require security at ultra low-cost, low-power
How the next Work Programme can contribute to your competitiveness in Europe and worldwide? • “First to market” address the next generation challenges – “Safety related applications” are known and understood. Solutions continue to be developed. – “Security related applications” are less well understood and need attention. Securing GNSS is critical to success. – “Regulatory and Policy related applications” also require attention to identify the opportunity for E-GNSS. How can E-GNSS support EU policies and MS policies?
• Global markets have their own needs. E-GNSS offers new services to global markets. – PPP in consumer applications (would also promote CS) – Authentication (would promote OS-A and CS) – Timing
