PRESS RELEASE
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN HOSPITALITY ASIA PLATINUM AWARDS 2008-2010 REGIONAL SERIES nce again, World Asia Publishing’s ‘Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards’ (HAPA) has arrived at the peak of excitement. This is the first ever Regional Series and will be celebrated over 3 days and 2 nights. This year’s Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards 2008-2010, Regional Series, successfully garnered 139 nominees from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand to vie for recognition as the ‘Best in Southeast Asia’ for the very first time in the hospitality industry. The prestige and reputation of HAPA speaks for itself as competition in all categories cumulate for an exciting showdown. The Major Excellence Awards especially drew interest and attention from all nominees. The highlight of the awards presentation have always been the recognition for this prestigious category of awards and the Regional Series, featuring 4 awards in this category, totalled a whopping 167 nominations. The battle for Culinary Excellence is also at its peak with 210 nominations from the 4 participating countries vying to be recognized for serving up the best cuisine. The total number of nominations for the 32 awards up for grabs this Regional Series stands at 730. The competition is hot and the quality is par excellence! This year’s Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards 2008-2010, Regional Series will start off with a Welcome Dinner on 27 November 2008 for the Regional Nominees at Luna Chill Out Bar, Pacific Regency Hotel Suites, Kuala Lumpur. As we introduce HAPA to Indonesia and Thailand, we will be presenting local awards for ‘The Best in Indonesia’ and ‘The Best in Thailand’ to kick off their local series of this prestigious awards. This will be a smart casual dress affair and the colour for the night is pure white. Selected Malaysian Nominees will be invited to attend to forge closer alliances within our regional HAPA network. The Gala Charity Dinner and Awards Presentation will follow up on 28 November 2008 at the Mayang Sari Grand Ballroom, JW Marriot Kuala Lumpur. As per tradition, this will be a black tie affair and the HAPA colours this year is black and gold, to reflect the grandeur of HAPA’s very first Regional Series. The grand finale to the evening will be ‘The Best in Southeast Asia’ award. HAPA will be awarding the Top 10 Best in Southeast Asia and from these 10 winners, one of them will receive the ultimate award for being ‘The Best of The Best’! Every year, HAPA gives back to the community via a charity foundation. This year, the HAPA Committee has decided to be ‘hands on’ and work directly with a selected programme. This year’s charity programme features the ‘HAPA Wish Tree’ whereby proceeds from the Gala Charity Dinner will be used to grant and fulfil the wishes of children stricken with cancer from the paediatric ward at University Hospital in Malaysia. A ‘Wish Tree’ with ‘Wish Cards’ has been placed at the ward and the children have filled up many cards, telling us what they need and would like to have. The children’s paediatric ward could also do with more support. More details about this programme will be highlighted overleaf. HAPA has always believed in honouring the most outstanding and deserving departments as well as the most exceptional establishments and personnel in the hospitality industry. HAPA’s resolution is in serving as a benchmark and platform for equal opportunities to be given to all ranks and levels of the hospitality for the sole purpose of acknowledgement, recognition and reward.

PRESS RELEASE HAPA also believes in making the effort to enhance the levels of service among the hospitality practitioners. The strength of this dynamic industry is invariably credited to all the individuals who contribute in one way or another and as true pillars of the industry, they need to be singled out, recognized and rewarded. HAPA was after all, conceptualized based on these basic fundamentals. And, we are proud to announce that these basics have been accepted with open arms, beyond our shores and backyards to embrace an even larger community with even higher standards and quality since the inception of the HAPA Awards. Judging for the most part, is now done via an audit system with strict criteria and much higher expectations than before as service excellence in the industry has taken a huge leap forward over the years. The HAPA Committee expects nothing less but is always pursuing more of this dynamic industry. Scores will be given by the judges, with set criteria for each category and then it is fed to a server to be tabulated. The property, establishment or personality with the highest score wins. It may seem simple, but the audit is very tough as the participants this year are of the highest quality. This year, the HAPA Committee will also issue a ‘HAPA Report Card’ with the intention that this step of transparency will spur everyone in the industry to excel even further when their strengths and weaknesses are made known to them. The HAPA Committee prides itself in ensuring that judging is carried out fairly and accurately. The judges themselves have to adhere to strict guidelines, are also required to provide feedback and are also subject to routine checks carried out by the HAPA Committee. This new computerized ‘Audit System’ will also ensure that the judges will no longer have access to the forms once it is submitted. The HAPA Committee will also not have access to these forms until the tabulation is done and the scores printed. Therefore, the audit will be final and no correspondence will be entertained by the judges or the HAPA Committee. It has always been HAPA’s policy to have only one winner in each category and this will also extend to the Regional Series. Hospitality Asia has successfully hosted the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards over the last six years and in order for the Awards Presentation to be successful, it is necessary that all establishments and individual personalities who are nominated attend the Gala Charity and Awards Presentation Dinner. It is in the true spirit of competition that all nominees be present for this historic regional first. World Asia Publishing would like to take this opportunity to extend its sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Panel of Judges, sponsors, professional hospitality associations, supporters and players of the industry, and not forgetting the nominees, for making HAPA possible year after year. The first ever Regional Gala Charity and Awards Presentation Dinner will be held on 28 November 2008. Mark your calendar, book your flight and we will see all of you there! CHARITY PROGRAMME
THE HAPA ‘WISH TREE’ HOSPITALITY ASIA PLATINUM AWARDS GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY very year, World Asia Publishing’s ‘Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards’ (HAPA) hosts a Gala Charity Dinner in conjunction with its Awards Presentation to not only honour and recognize deserving people and establishments in the hospitality industry but also as a means to ‘give back to the community’. Over the years, the HAPA Committee has carefully selected various foundations to champion, such as the Tunku Nurul Hayati Children’s Trust Fund, Leukaemia & Lymphoma Foundation, Yellow House Foundation, World Vision and Pusat Majudiri ‘Y’ for the Deaf. All nett proceeds from HAPA’s Gala Charity Dinner has been dedicated to the ‘HAPA Gives Back To The Community’ project. This year, as HAPA runs its 7th Series, it will be no different. The only difference as HAPA runs its first-ever Regional Series in 2008, is that the HAPA Committee has decided to be more ‘hands on’ with its community project and has chosen to work directly to aid children with cancer, via Prof. Dr. Chan Lee Lee (Senior Consultant Paediatrician, Paediatric Haematology & Oncology, Head, Paediatric Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation) and Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. Synonymous with the ‘Make A Wish Foundation’, World Asia Publishing (WAP) has setup a ‘HAPA Wish Tree’ in the Paediatric Oncology Ward for the cancer children to have their wishes made known by writing down their ‘ONE’ wish and hanging them on the ‘HAPA Wish Tree’. All nett proceeds from this year’s Gala Charity Dinner will be channelled primarily and exclusively to fulfilling these children’s wishes, such as a trip to Hong Kong Disneyland, a laptop for home schooling, books, home entertainment, bicycles and more. It is our hope that these simple grants, will improve their emotional environment and bring a spark of light to their quality of life.

CHARITY PROGRAMME
A brave child, under the watchful eyes of her father, undergoing treatment at the Paediatric Oncology Ward
According to Prof. Dr. Chan Lee Lee, the most common cancers faced by children are brain tumours and the blood cancers – ALL (Acute Lymphocytic Leukaemia) and AML (Acute Myelogenous Leukaemia). According to independent research, ALL makes up 80% of childhood acute leukaemias. ALL is a fast-growing cancer in which the body produces a large number of immature white blood cells. These cells can be found in the blood, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen and other organs. In ALL cancerous cells multiply quickly and replace normal cells. Cancerous cells take over normal parts of the bone marrow causing bone marrow failure. A person with ALL is more likely to bleed and have infections because there are fewer normal blood cells. Most cases of ALL have no obvious cause. However, persons with Down Syndrome have an increased risk for ALL. AML is cancer that starts inside bone marrow, the soft tissues inside bones that helps form blood cells. The cancer grows from cell that would normally turn into white blood cells. Persons with this type of cancer have abnormal cells inside their bone marrow. The cells grow very fast, and replace healthy blood cells. The bone marrow which helps the body fight infections eventually stops working correctly. Persons with AML become more prone to infections and have an increased risk for bleeding as the numbers of healthy boold cells decrease. Treatment for both ALL and AML involve chemotherapy to destroy cancer cells. But chemotherapy also destroys normal, healthy cells as well. Patients are at an increased risk for infection and are usually kept away from other people to prevent infection. Prof. Dr. Chan stresses that the first four months of treatment is very intensive and a complete treatment process can last between two and a half to five years. The Paediatric Oncology Ward at Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur receives up to 130 new patients a year and the ward currently has only 20 beds. Upon diagnosis, treatment is immediate and the lack of beds has caused a waiting period (days) for new patients. The ward tries to regulate patients to accommodate as many new patients as possible by using the Day Care Centre to facilitate ‘healthier’ patients. According to Prof. Dr. Chan, leukaemia has an 80 per cent cure rate upon early diagnosis. After 5 years, if the patient is free of symptoms, they are declared to be in remission. The Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur has a Leukaemia Fund, setup by the hospital itself to help those in need. ‘No child is denied treatment because they are poor!’ says Prof. Dr. Chan. ‘However, the department needs a bigger wing, more beds and definitely more staff!’ The lack of doctors, nurses and support staff makes it all the more difficult to provide these children with the attention and emotional support they require. The parents themselves need help to lessen their psychological burden. While the government has done a great job in supplementing the cost of treatment, there are other environmental, psychological and emotional aspects to look into as well. The treatment for cancer is a long and tedious journey for both the patient and care giver. All of the children are likely to be home schooled and are usually kept indoors to prevent infection during treatment. Parents are literally dedicated to their care. Both parties have very little emotional support and it is our hope that the ‘HAPA Wish Tree’ will be able to grant these children their ‘ONE’ wish, to put a smile on their face and a little warmth in their parent’s hearts. Proceeds from the HAPA Gala Charity Dinner will also be used to improve the current facilities available at the children’s ward. While we cannot make their treatment less painful, we can certainly hope to make it more pleasant. World Asia Publishing and the children at the Paediatric Oncology Ward, Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur would like to thank you for your generousity and support. Donations can be made in the form of cash or products sponsorship as per the children’s wishes. We currently have more than 70 wishes to fullfill and hope to grant them all with your generous support. For more information, kindly contact us +60 3 7954 1911 or e-mail us at
