Budget 2018: introducing the Canada Workers Benefit In Budget 2018—Equality + Growth: A Strong Middle Class, our government is taking the next steps toward building a fairer and more prosperous Canada by introducing the Canada Workers Benefit (CWB), a refundable tax credit that is more generous and accessible than the Working Income Tax Benefit (WITB) it replaces. Starting in 2019, low-income workers in Longueuil–CharlesLeMoyne will be able to keep more of their hard-earned paycheque thanks to the CWB. For instance, a worker earning an annual salary of $15,000 could receive up to almost $500 more than with the WTIB. This will help put more money in the pockets of low-income earners and give people a little extra support as they transition to work. Qualifying workers won’t have to worry about applying for the new CWB. There is no form to fill out. Unlike the previous Tax Benefit which required you to apply, everyone who is eligible for the CWB will automatically receive it when they file their taxes. The government knows that not all low-income workers claim the benefits to which they are entitled on their tax return. By allowing the Canada Revenue Agency to automatically determine eligibility, an estimated 300,000 additional low-income workers will receive the new CWB for the 2019 tax year. The new Canada Workers Benefit will deliver real help to more than two million Canadians who are working hard to join the middle class – raising around 70,000 Canadians out of poverty.

Longueuil–Charles-LeMoyne couple launches Petition E-1558 Despite this tragedy, these parents decided to take action by presenting Petition E-1558 to the House of Commons. When Mr. Panneton and Ms. Fuentes came to my riding office to ask me to sponsor their petition, I was touched not only by their story, but also by their determination to raise public awareness in the hopes of preventing other families from suffering a similar loss. I am very proud to sponsor this petition, and I look forward to presenting E-1558 to the House on their behalf. Sherry with Mr. Philippe Panneton and Ms. Wendy Fuentes
Mr. Philippe Panneton and Ms. Wendy Fuentes, a couple from the riding, reached out to my office to launch an electronic petition on the Parliament of Canada’s website. Their petition, E-1558, asks for April 26 to be declared National Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) Awareness Day. Two years ago, Mr. Panneton and Ms. Fuentes’ son Manuel suddenly passed away in his sleep at only 21 months old. His cause of death remains unexplained.
