How to create your first Facebook Ad. Note: You’ll need a Facebook Business Page in order to create Facebook Ads. If you don’t have one yet you can learn how to set it up here.

Steps to create a Facebook Ad:

 

1. Visit Facebook Business and click on Create an Ad (you may be asked to create a business account).

2. Campaign Section:

• Choose a marketing objective. If you’re trying to direct traffic to your website, choose “Traffic” (see screenshot).
 • Give a name to your Campaign.
 3. Ad Set Section:

• Give a name to your Ad Set.
 • Choose an Audience. You want to make sure your ad is shown to people that are likely to be interested in your product or service. This is where you can target your ads based on a person’s location (see screenshot), age, gender, and interests (see screenshot). Facebook will give you the ad’s potential reach based on your choices.
 • Choose your Ad’s Placements. In this section you’ll be able to choose on which device type (Desktop or Mobile) and where on Facebook, Instagram, Facebook’s Audience Network and Messenger you want your ad to show (e.g., News Feed, Right Column, Stories, etc.).

• Choose your Ad’s Budget and Schedule.
 4. Ad Section:
 • Choose which Facebook Page you want to create your Ad on. If you connected an Instagram Page, this will also show up.
 • Choose Your Ad’s Format (Carousel, Single Image, Single Video, Slide Show, Collection, etc.). If you wish to use other formats, you’ll need to change your marketing objective. (See page 2 and 3 for a visual overview of the different ad types).
 • Choose an Image for your Ad. You can either upload one from your computer or choose one of their Free Stock Images. Make sure you follow Facebook’s recommended image specs.
 • Choose your Ad’s Links and Text. (see screenshot)

Website URL: This is the page people will be redirected to when they click on your Ad.

Headline: This is the text that will appear beneath your Ad’s image.

Text: This is the text that will appear above your Ad.

Call To Action: This is the button that will appear on you ad.

News Feed Link Description: This is the text that will appear below the Headline.

Display Link: This is how your website will be displayed at the bottom of your Ad.

I won't go into the specifics of all these ad types (as you can get them directly from Facebook’s Ads Guide), but I hope you’re starting to see the potential and room for creativity behind this advertising platform.

Tracking and Optimising Your Ad. Once your Ad is live, you’ll want to make sure that each buck you spend is spent well! There are a number of tools and apps that allow you to track the results of your ads and optimise its delivery, including Facebook’s own Ads Reporting and Analytics tools.
