Restored to elegance a century after it was built, Hughes High School reopened to students with a $36-million renovation inside and out to its Collegiate Tudor-style 290,873-square-foot building — retaining its historic beauty while updating for today’s technology.

Architectural Delights — 1 Hughes High boasts a bounty of exquisite architectural details throughout, including mosaic tile floors, arched doorways, stained-glass windows, carved stone figures and Rookwood-tile drinking fountains. Outside, the building is rimmed by terra-cotta figures, called grotesques, depicting educational themes. The building’s exterior was meticulously restored.
Classrooms — 2 Modern desks and chairs coupled with new computers turn 100-year-old classrooms into 21st-century learning spaces. Innovation Center — 3, 4 The former library has transformed into an Innovation Center, offering students space to explore college choices in a collaborative environment. Students also have access to the library nearby at the University of Cincinnati.

Gymnasium — 7 Sunshine coming in skylights brightens this renovated gymnasium in the building’s lower level; it’s used for physical education classes and practice games. A regulation-size gym for competitive games is housed in the adjacent Krueck Center.
