Hudson is a great place to live, work and play. What makes it so great? The restaurants, the shops, the thriving business community, the schools, the charm of the small town feel against the backdrop of the big city and of course the people! Don’t overlook however, that the founders of Hudson landed here largely because of the St. Croix River, the scenic beauty and the many natural assets that we still enjoy today!
The students traveled to Xcel Energy to continue the discussion, this time focusing on stewardship of the St. Croix River. Presenters included Monica Zachay, the Land & Water Director of St. Croix River Association, Julie Galonska, the Superintendent of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, Dan Baumann P.E. Director of West Central Region, WI.DNR and Rob Olson, Manager of Xcel Energy’s Hydro Operations.
Leadership Hudson students took a look at the environmental aspects of life in Hudson. They explored the impact of river-city living on the many natural assets of our region. Leadership Hudson’s Environmental Day began with a telling of the history of Willow River State Park by Naturalist Melissa Dupont of Friends of Willow River and Kinnickinnic State Parks. This history was followed by a panel discussion featuring several regional representative including Tyler Busko, Park Ranger at Willow River State Park, Jim Schrieber owner of Plantables, Clare Neenan, Natural Resource Specialist of Carpenter Nature Center and Jennifer Vieth, Executive Director of Carpenter Nature Center. These environmental experts participated in a lively discussion examining conservation and recreation of the local environment and its natural resources.
A visit to the home of North Hudson resident, Gary Konkol, rounded out the experience as students toured this beautiful as well as amazing, self-sustaining home.

As students explored issues of environmental endangerment and resource management, we trust that their take-away from Environmental Day will be to continue to protect the natural assets that make life in the St. Croix Valley so special!
