INTERNATIONAL ADVANCED LEVEL – Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Pure Mathematics IAL and GCE unit combinations explained 1. Specification: The IAL specification http://www.edexcel.com/quals/ial/maths/Pages/default.aspx offers 3 awards: Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Pure Mathematics using 12 units including the combined Core units. Mechanics 4 and 5, Statistics 4 and Decision Mathematics 2 are not offered in the IAL specification. 2. Assessment: IAL examinations are available in January and June 3. New Core Mathematics unit C12: This is assessed as 1 unit but covers the same content in C1 and C2 4. New Core Mathematics unit C34: This is assessed as 1 unit but covers the same content in C3 and C4 5. New Further Pure Mathematics unit F1: This is assessed as 1 unit but covers additional content to FP1 6. Students who have banked GCE units and want to transfer to IAL: Students who have banked GCE units up to June 2013 can combine them with IAL units to achieve IAL awards e.g. 6663, 6664 + WMA02, WME01, WST01 = YMA01 7. Students who have banked GCE units and who MUST finish in January 2014: These students MUST be entered using transitional codes where available and entries MUST be accompanied by the relevant cash-in code. The award will be IAL. *If these students return to take examinations, they have two options as outlined below in Example B. 8. GCE award: GCE awards can consist only of GCE unit results. IAL or Transitional unit results cannot be used. 9. Re-sitting IAL units: Students can re-sit IAL units once before certification. The first sitting under IAL will count as 1st attempt, even if the unit has already been sat under GCE.
