IEEE Control Systems Magazine Authors’ Guidelines for Manuscript Preparation

This document describes the style required for manuscripts submitted to IEEE CSM. Manuscripts that are accepted for review, must be syntactically correct, well written, and in accordance with this document. Please read and follow these instructions with care and accuracy. Please feel free to contact the Editor-in-Chief with questions or comments.

Please number your pages clearly, at the bottom, and centered.



You may use Word or LATEX. numerous equations.



IEEE CSM articles are intended to inform the control engineering community of developments in specialized areas of control. Therefore, submissions must strive for high-quality exposition that explains the principal issues and challenges of their applications area. At least some of the introduction must be of a tutorial nature in order to introduce nonexperts to the area of application.



Do not include an abstract. No abstract is needed or allowed.



Do not number sections. Center and boldface all section headings, and left-align and boldface all subsection headings. For subsubsection headings, use nonbold font, left justified.



List references in the order of citation in the text.



Do not put http:// addresses in the text. Rather, put www addresses (with the name of the web page) in the reference list, and refer to such items as appropriate within the text.



Do not use footnotes of any kind or for any purpose. No footnotes are allowed or used in any article published in IEEE CSM.



Use double spacing throughout.

LATEX is preferred for articles with

Use margins that are about 1 inch on all sides, allowing for US size paper.



Be sure that your references adequately capture prior relevant research. If you plan to include a large number of references, please consider relegating some to a sidebar.



The Magazine encourages attractive illustrations, figures, and photos. IEEE usually adds color to figures.



Digital images must be at least 300 dpi of size 4 inches by 4 inches to be publishable. Be sure to scan your photos at adequate resolution. As a rule of thumb, provide images that are at least 300 Kb, with 1 Mb preferred.



Please include a short biography of each author. Please include the mailing address, email, telephone number, and fax number of the corresponding author only.



Before final acceptance, you will be sent a copyedited version of your original manuscript. Please make the corrections indicated in the interests of improving the readability and appearance of your article as well as to ensure uniformity with the Magazine’s style.

Quick Check Guide  The following words and phrases should not be used in CSM papers:  Get, our, should, via, well known, a number of, so-called, i.e., e.g., will, shall, quite, simply, clearly, good, bad, recent, proposed, introduce, superior, successful, we.  The following words can be used but only rarely:  Important, small, large, very, extremely.  Do not say something is important unless you explain why it is important.  Avoid beginning a sentence with the phrases “There is” and “There are”  Do not use the words “this” and “these” as nouns.  Describe prior work by your group in exactly the same manner that you would describe the work of other groups. Hence, do not use the word “our.”  IEEE CSM papers are intended to be expository, which means that they explain things to nonexperts, assuming knowledge of control and systems theory at the graduate level. Survey articles are not published in CSM. The opening section of the article can review the relevant literature. A sidebar can be used to briefly survey the relevant literature.  Sidebars are encouraged for self-contained digressions and tutorials.  Avoid review and preview in CSM articles. If you must remind the reader of something, do it quickly.  Use “which” and “that” correctly when introducing clauses. These words are not interchangeable. When introducing a clause, “which” is preceded by a comma.  Do not make uncalibrated statements, such as “The estimate is accurate.” The same point applies to the words simple, general, large, and small. These words are meaningful for comparison, but not when used in an absolute sense.  Do not judge results as “successful” or “good.” Let the reader decide. Err on the side of neutrality.  Punctuate every equation correctly within the context of the surrounding sentence.  Do not use the math symbols for “there exists” and “for all.”  Indent every paragraph visibly and intentionally.  Do not say “paper” but rather “article”  Do not mention authors by name.  Be sure that every figure has a detailed, informative caption in the Magazine style. This style begins with a short title followed by a few informative sentences.  Be sure that every axis of every plot is correctly labeled with symbols and units.  Check the document below to understand how to typeset numbers and units.  Do not make vague references to the "literature." Back up points with specific references.

Formatting Instructions In preparing your article for the IEEE Control Systems Magazine (CSM), please note the following guidelines concerning layout and formatting.

Manuscript Order Please order the elements of your manuscript as follows: 1. Title and subtitle. 2. Names of authors 3. Main text, with no heading for the first section, which is assumed to be the introduction. 4. References, beginning on a new page. 5. Each figure on a separate page with its caption, using (a), (b), (c) for subfigures. Each sidebar must be mentioned in the main text. See below for details on figure caption style. 6. Each table on a separate page with its caption. See below for details on table caption style. 7. Each sidebar beginning on a new page followed by its figures and tables labeled Figure S1, Table S1. See below for more details on numbering figures, tables, and equations in sidebars. 8. Author bios beginning on a new page. Each of these elements is described in detail below.

Title IEEE CSM titles are in two parts, typeset in the exact style below.

Main Text In assembling the main text, pay careful attention to the order of topics as well as the sectioning. Choose section and subsection headings to reflect the material and to serve as a roadmap for the reader. Do not provide a section heading at the beginning of your article, which IEEE CSM assumes is the introduction. You can use subsubsection headings if you wish but be sure to use them carefully so the reader can follow the layout. Please use this style for review purposes: Section heads: Centered, bold, large font Subsection headings: Left justified, bold, regular size font Subsubsection headings: Left justified, not bold, regular size font You can treat an example as a subsection or subsubsection.

Figures, Tables, and Captions Be sure that every figure and table is well motivated and transmits an essential point in relation to the main ideas of the article. IEEE CSM uses a descriptive and informative style for figure and table captions that enhances the impact and appeal of figures. This style is required for every figure and table. You can think of a figure or table caption as a summary of what you would say if you were presenting the figure or table in a PowerPoint presentation. Thought, time, and effort are needed to compose high-quality figure captions. Each caption must be informative, interesting, and helpful. The figure or table caption may provide a summary of the main points from the text. In fact, repetition between the figure caption and text is encouraged. A figure or table caption can also be used as a mini-tutorial for the reader. Please see examples later in this document, and consult any recent issue of IEEE CSM. Do not include labels above plots. Avoid using acronyms in figures and figure captions so that the figure captions can be read independently of the text. If an acronym appears in a figure, then please redefine the acronym in the figure caption. Please be sure that every figure, table, and sidebar (except figures and tables inside sidebars) is cited in the main text. Place all figures on separate pages at the end of the document, in accordance with the order described above. IEEE places the figures at the appropriate place when your article is typeset. It is the responsibility of the author to obtain copyright permission for all materials that are subject to copyright protection. It is the author’s responsibility to obtain this permission prior to final acceptance of the manuscript. You do not need to obtain copyright permission before you submit your article. Each relevant figure caption must include an explicit statement that permission has been given. At the end of the figure caption, include a statement such as “(With permission of Smith and Jones Publishers.)” or “(Image courtesy of Technocontrol, Inc.).” To put hats on variables in legends in Matlab, use ylabel('{}_{^{\fontsize{8}H}}^{\^}') More generally, xlabel('$\bar{h}$','interpreter','latex')

References General Guidelines All cited references must be publicly accessible. Internal reports, theses, and dissertations are not viewed as being publicly accessible, and thus cannot be included in the reference list. IEEE CSM is an archival publication, whose articles are backed up by other archival publications. However, obscure or unpublished documents that can be accessed from the web can be cited as long as the citation includes a URL address from which the document can be accessed. In these cases, a website must be provided from which the document can be obtained. All references need to be complete and accurate in the sense of authors, title, volume, pages, date. Issue number is not crucial.

Citation Style in the Text References must be listed in the order of citation in the text. Reference citations in the text must be bracketed numbers; that is, [3]-[5], [23]. For multiple nonsequential citations, separately bracket each number in numerical order; that is, [3], [5], [7]. In LATEX, the package \usepackage{cite} can be used to produce the required style. Avoid mentioning authors by names in the text. In general, it is fine to mention illustrious names such as Newton and Bode, but please do not mention the names of contemporaries. The passive voice is fine. Do NOT write: “Jones [22] shows that…” Instead: “It is shown in [22] that…” Do not put http:// addresses in the text. Rather, put all web addresses in the reference list as separate items.

Bibliography Style and Guidelines IEEE CSM has a specific style for the bibliography. Unfortunately, we have no LATEX bibstyle file to match. Therefore, it is acceptable to use the standard IEEE bibstyle file or any other style file that approximates IEEE CSM style. It is greatly preferable to cite reviewed and published material rather than unreviewed and unpublished material. Consequently, please minimize citations to dissertations, theses, or technical reports, which are not reviewed and are difficult to obtain. However, if such material is posted on a website, then you can cite the document with the URL. Do not include private communications in the reference list. The acknowledgments can be used for this purpose. Every reference that is listed must be obtainable and accessible, either through open sources or websites. Technical reports of any kind that are not accessible cannot be cited. All cited work must be accessible to readers within reasonable limits. Do not include full first names of authors, only initials. Initials come first; that is, F. G. Smith. Do not use “et al.” Instead, always list all authors. For the title of an article, capitalize only the first word, and place the title in quotes. The names of journals and proceedings are italicized. Location is included for conferences. For journal articles, include vol. and no., lower case and abbreviated in each case, and set off with commas. However, no. is optional. Page numbers appear after the year of publication for conference proceedings and books, but before the year of publication for journals.

Sidebars A sidebar is a self-contained digression that provides additional information in support of the main text. Sidebars are strongly encouraged since readers find these digressions useful and informative. Every sidebar must be mentioned in the main text using the style „For details, see “How Does Fusion Work?”‟ Label each sidebar using the style “Sidebar 3: How Does Fusion Work?” Note that sidebars are numbered, although the numbers are not mentioned in the text. Figures and tables in sidebars are numbered as Figure S1 and Table S1. If the first sidebar has Figure S1 and Figure S2, then the first figure in the second sidebar is numbered S3. The same numbering scheme is used for equations and tables that appear in sidebars. To manually label sidebar equations in LATEX, use the command \tag*{\mbox{\rm{S4}}}. Sidebar equations and figures can be automatically numbered by using the style \setcounter{equation}{0} \renewcommand{\theequation}{S\arabic{equation}} \setcounter{table}{0} \renewcommand{\thetable}{S\arabic{table}} \setcounter{figure}{0} \renewcommand{\thefigure}{S\arabic{figure}} A sidebar can cite references from the bibliography of the main text or it can have its own bibliography using the numbering style [S1], [S2] and following the same scheme as sidebar figures and tables. Sidebar references can also be automatically numbered using these steps: 1. Place each part of the article that is to have a separate bibliography in an include file, with \bibliography as the last line 2. Add \usepackage{chapterbib} in the main latex file 3. Run latex and bibtex as usual 4. Comment out the \usepackage{chapterbib} and all \bibliography and \bibliographystyle commands 5. Copy the .bbl files into the main latex file 6. Run latex and comment out duplicate \bibitem entries in the sidebar bibliographies 7. Relabel the references in the sidebars as \bibitem[S1]{...}

Author Biographies At the end of your article, please include a brief biography of every author. Do not include photos in your article. The Editor will contact you concerning photos. Include the email and mailing address of only the corresponding author. Do not include place or date of birth. Include details of education. Say “the B.S. degree,” not “his B.S. degree.” Mention the name of each author only once in each biography. Do not use bold font for authors‟ names. Limit biographies to 220 words.

Writing Style In preparing your article for the IEEE Control Systems Magazine (CSM), please note the following guidelines concerning writing style. IEEE CSM places high emphasis on the quality and precision of exposition. Articles that are not well written cannot be considered for publication. Many of the guidelines below reflect standard writing practice. However, a few of these guidelines are specific to IEEE CSM.

Tone of Writing Adopt an objective, scientific tone. It is acceptable to use “we” sparingly. Please avoid the vague subject “one.” Passive voice is fine and preferable to “one.” Do not refer to the reader as “you.” A historical overview can appear in the introduction or a sidebar. However, reportorial writing in describing the technical results is not allowed. Do not describe how you developed your results or how and why your research progressed. In fact, experimental or computational results can usually be described as if they are unfolding in the present with an objective description. Your article must not be written as a report of your past activities. See the section on Tense. Along the same lines, do not use the word “our.” Your article is a scientific essay, not a report on what your group possesses. Be objectively and dispassionately descriptive in referring to “the testbed” rather than “our testbed.” Refer to your work in the same objective style that you refer to the work of other researchers.

Sentences and Paragraphs Write simply and clearly. Use clear and simple sentences, and arrange them in logical order. A good rule of thumb is to try to minimize the use of colons, semicolons, quotation marks, and parentheses. Please strive for a smooth, linear writing style. Carefully introduce terminology, and use your terminology consistently. Write with precision and clarity. Use the first part of your introduction to present your area of application to the readers. Do not assume that readers know anything about your application. Tell readers about the

control issues and challenges that arise and why these issues are relevant to your application. Use examples to illustrate these issues and challenges. A long complex sentence can often be divided into two shorter sentences that are easier to read. Do not try to say too much in a single sentence. When a sentence has multiple clauses, arrange the clauses carefully. Try to keep each clause close to the noun that the clause modifies. Organize sentences into coherent paragraphs of reasonable length. A paragraph can be as short as one or two sentences but usually not longer than half of a page. The opening sentence of each paragraph announces the content of the paragraph. The closing sentence completes the thought. Start a new paragraph whenever you change thoughts or topics. Organize paragraphs into sections, subsections, and sub-subsections with common themes. Give careful consideration to the section/subsection/sub-subsection structure of your article. Design your article to have a natural flow and organization that helps the reader understand your thought processes. The ideal length of a paragraph is 1/3 to 1/2 of a page. Try to avoid paragraphs that are longer than 3/4 of a page. A theorem or proposition is a single paragraph. Unlike the document you are reading, indent every paragraph without exception. an indentation of 1 cm.

Use

Wordsmithing Suggestions Equation (3) implies that x is negative. The word “since” is an acceptable synonym for “because.” Replace “Our goal is to determine if x is real.” with “Our goal is to determine whether or not x is real.” Replace “If the temperature is high enough, then the ice melts.” with “When the temperature is high enough, the ice melts.” In other words, “when” is more appropriate than “if” in some instances. Multiple use of “and” can be confusing. For example, replace “The simulation uses linear and nonlinear models and variable-step integration.” with “The simulation uses linear and nonlinear models with variable-step integration.”

It is sometimes helpful to write “A is true whether or not B is true.” Not OK: You can only enroll in four courses. OK: You can enroll in only four courses. This error occurs often. “None of the models are linear.” Note that “none” is interpreted as plural even though the word means “not one.” Do not use “so-called.” Instead of writing “The controller uses the so-called Smith method for stability analysis.” write “The controller uses the Smith method for stability analysis.” Whenever using technical terms that might not be well known to a wide audience, either embed the definition in the sentence or write in such a way that the reader can infer the meaning from the context. For example, “The controller is based on feedback linearization, that is, inversion of the nonlinearities.” or “The controller is based on feedback linearization, a control algorithm that inverts the nonlinearities.” Be careful of “could” and “would” since these words have subtle and ambiguous meanings when referring to status or contingency. Avoid the use of “should,” which is problematic and ambiguous. “It should rain today.” “He should win the Nobel prize.” “The roots should be real.” Consider using instead the words “expected,” “must,” “need,” or “require,” depending on the meaning. The word “should” is appropriate in giving instructions, such as “You should not drink and drive.” This usage appears in the document you are reading, but is extremely rare in IEEE CSM. Avoid using the word “generally” and the phrase “in general,” which means “often” or “usually” but otherwise is imprecise. Rewrite “The Bode plot is needed in order to find the gain margin.” as “The Bode plot is needed to find the gain margin.” Avoid using overused words that exaggerate and provide little information. Example of poor words to use, “Many writers use quite a lot of these words, which might appear to be extremely helpful, but is not very useful.” In general, intensifiers such as “very” should be avoided and minimize the use of imprecise adverbs. Write factually, and err on the side of understatement. Avoid “hype,” that is, hyperbole. Use the words “extremely, “many,” “quite,” and “very” sparingly. Avoid repetition. Do not repeat what you have already said. However, an exception to this rule is that figure captions must be written to summarize and highlight the main

points in the text. Consequently, repetition between the text and figure captions is encouraged. Avoid non sequiturs. In particular, be sure that successive sentences are clear and flow logically and coherently, without jumps in thought. Avoid sentences that begin a new thought but do not follow up. Such sentences “hang.” Avoid rhetorical questions, for which answers are not expected, such as “What could be more important than solving this problem?” Avoid asking the reader questions to advance the presentation. Avoid the word “important.” For example, do not say “It is important for engineers to develop teraflop computers that cost less than US$100.” However, it may be acceptable to write, “Inexpensive teraflop computers are important since they can facilitate real-time weather forecasting.” However, it is much better to avoid judgments and write, “Inexpensive teraflop computers can facilitate real-time weather forecasting.” Let the reader decide whether something is important or not. Avoid vague statements based on hypothetical situations. Write with specifics. Do not use “one” as the subject of a sentence. OK: We expect to find that… Not OK: One expects to find that… Try not to use more words than are needed to make your points. Avoid excessive verbiage while allowing a small amount of redundancy for fault tolerance. Avoid starting sentences with “There are” or “There is.” Weak: “There are many models that are ill conditioned.” Stronger: “Many models are ill conditioned.” The correct use of “a,” “the,” and “this” is challenging, especially for non-native speakers of English. Think of “a” as meaning “some,” while “the” refers to a specific or unique object. The adjective “this” refers to an object that has already been specified. Omit “the” when used twice in a row such as in “The inverse and [the] transpose of the matrix A are given by (3) and (4), respectively.” Despite these simple rules, subtle cases can arise, although with some thought the correct usage usually becomes evident. In some cases, it is best to use neither “the” nor “a.” Example: “The algorithm is based on a colored noise model. A noise term is included in the state equation. The process noise w has stationary statistics. Noise is known to degrade the performance of estimation algorithms.” Do not use the word “clearly.”

Tense

Furthermore, it is usually possible to avoid the use of the future tense. Replace, “This controller will solve many difficult problems.” with “This controller can solve many problems.” Some examples of good tense usage: These rules are written for the benefit of IEEE CSM. The experimental results showed the applicability of the method in this particular application. The results of [7] suggest that saturation can degrade performance. The results given in the next section show that the plant is nonlinear.

Equations Punctuate every equation as a smooth, integral part of the sentence, using commas and periods as appropriate. Except in rare instances, every equation in IEEE CSM articles has a comma or period at the end. That is, punctuate each equation as part of a sentence in a grammatically correct manner. Be absolutely sure that every symbol in every equation is precisely defined with appropriate dimensions or units. Good: It follows from Newton‟s second law f = ma,

where a denotes acceleration, that force is proportional to mass. Hence, a = f/m.

Do not precede equations with a colon. Do not use the word “following” to introduce an equation. The first equation above is an appositive. The second equation provides the verb to the sentence. A comma is used at the end of every equation in a list. Use a comma at the end of an equation that is followed by “where.” Do number all equations that you need to refer to. Number equations in the style (1), (2), (3). Number an equation and refer to the equation by its number rather than writing “the above equation.” Do not use a single number to reference multiple equations. It is better to assign a separate number to each equation. Center every displayed equation. Try to avoid including words on the same line as a displayed equation. An exception is “for all.”

Acronyms Acronyms are useful for streamlining the text. Define acronyms at the first opportunity, then use the acronym consistently: A model reference adaptive controller (MRAC) was used for stabilization. This MRAC can be used to control uncertain systems. The following rules apply to the use of acronyms. Rule 1: Define all acronyms except those that represent names of commercial products. Although MIMO, SISO, and PID are widely used, it is usually a good idea to define these acronyms. Rule 2: To define an acronym, use the words first, followed by the acronym in parentheses. “The nonlinear backstepping (NBS) controller stabilizes the system.” Do not capitalize the words, just the acronym. Rule 3: Do not introduce an acronym that is not used subsequently. Rule 4: Avoid introducing an acronym that is subsequently used only one or two times. Rule 5. Be conservative in introducing acronyms. The sentence “The MV for the ODE was used in the MIMO PID FLC.” is painful to read. Rule 6: Do not use acronyms in a figure caption unless an acronym appears in the figure itself, in which case, redefine the acronym in the caption even if it is already defined in the main text. Rule 7: Do not use or define an acronym in a section or subsection heading. Rule 8: It is acceptable to begin a sentence with an acronym. Rule 9: If you develop a method or testbed, it may be extremely convenient to invent a name for the method or testbed, and refer to the method or testbed by its name. The name can then be shortened through the use of an acronym, which facilitates the discussion.

Punctuation Simple, short, and clear sentences can be highly effective.

Semicolons (;) and dashes () are fine, but do not overuse them. Avoid lists that use bullets (). A few lists with or without bullets are OK from time to time. Try to write in text form. Your article is not a PowerPoint presentation. Include the comma preceding “and” when referring to more than two items, such as x, y, and z. Please follow this rule consistently in your article. Likewise, write x, y, or z. A comma is needed to separate clauses in compound sentences, and this rule is universally followed. Note the comma before “and.” Omit the commas surrounding short appositives. For example, rewrite “the state variable, x, is a vector” as “the state variable x is a vector.”

Italics, Quotation Marks, Apostrophes, and Bold Italics can be used for emphasis, but only very rarely. Use italics for all mathematical variables such as x in y = f(x). Do not use italics for chemical compounds, atoms, and molecules such as NO and H2O. Minimize the use of italics for emphasis and quotation marks for nonstandard language. Unlike the document you are reading, do not use bold font for emphasis. Bold font can be used for math variables.

Hyphens The rules for hyphens are reasonably logical, but somewhat involved. This section provides examples of usage. Use hyphens for multiple modifiers such as “computer-based synthesis” or “Lyapunovfunction analysis” to show that the first word modifies the second word. The hyphen is also used in common phrases such as “state-space model,” “nonminimum-phase zero,” and “first-order systems.” “John is well known” does not have a hyphen since “is well known” is the predicate. Prefixes such as anti, bi, co, counter, de, ill, in, inter, intra, multi, non, off, on, out, over, post, pre, proto, pseudo, quad, quasi, re, semi, sub, super, trans, tri, under, uni, and well might or might not warrant a hyphen. When in doubt, do not use a hyphen. The prefix self requires a hyphen. Likewise, suffixes such as based, by, down, fixed, free, in, ite, less, off, out, up, and wise might or might not warrant a hyphen. When in doubt, do not use a hyphen. Nevertheless, The controller is self-regulating and interference-free. Standalone has no hyphen. Follow-up and close-up have hyphens.

Do not use a hyphen in coauthor, cochair, codirector, coeditor, cofounder, cooperate, coordinate, cosponsor, cosupervisor, coworker, and reinvent. Use a hyphen in co-opt, co-owner, re-establish, and re-evaluate. The system has three degrees of freedom (DOFs). A six-degree-of-freedom (6DOF) robotic arm is used for the experiment. Note the singular word “degree” in the latter phrase and the absence of a hyphen in 6DOF. The abbreviations 1D, 2D, and 3D have no hyphen. The testbed uses a 3-foot-long table. The table is 3-feet long. We use a 6-ft-by-6-ft test fixture.

Capitalization When in doubt, use lower case letters. Do not capitalize names of technical items. For example, write “linear-quadratic,” but do not write “Linear-Quadratic.” Always capitalize acronyms as in “linear-quadratic (LQ).” Write “Figure 3” and “Chapter 4,” but also write “figures 3 and 4” and “chapters 5 and 6.” Likewise for “Section 3,” “Theorem 3,” and Example 3,” as well as “sections 3 and 4 4,” “theorems 3 and 4,” and “examples 3 and 4.” We write “Editor George Smith” and “George Smith is the editor.” Note the difference in capitalization due to the editor as a title or the name of the position. Write ac and dc for AC and DC. Write cg for CG. Write Matlab and Simulink, not MATLAB and SIMULINK. Write dSpace. Capitalize Earth, Moon, Sun, and the names of all of the planets.

Units Write units *without* italics and with a space after the number. Correct: “3.57 mm”. Wrong: “3.57mm”. Wrong: “3.57 mm”. Wrong: “3.57mm”.

IEEE CSM uses “s” for second and “h” for hour. Also, use “l” (ell) for liter, but be sure that “l” is distinguishable from the number “1” in the font that you are using. It is best to use “ℓ” (script lower case “ell”) for liter if possible. Use “bit” for bit. Write “US$100” or “US$100 million” for money. Note the use of a hyphen in the units N-m, N-m-s, and kg-m2. Note that this style is different from the standard SI style.

Spelling English has some tricky spellings and a few tricky verbs. In addition, some spellings are not uniform among English-speaking countries. Leaders lead, and plumbers work with lead. Last week the leader led the group. Today I read a book. Yesterday, I read a book. Yesterday, the reader read a red book. Today, I lay down the book. Yesterday, I lay down the book. Last week, I had laid down the book. Today, I lie down on the floor. Yesterday, I lay down on the floor. Last week, I had lain down on the floor. The word “affect” is a verb. The word “effect” can be either a verb or a noun. Noise can affect the performance of the algorithm. The noise has an effect on the performance of the algorithm. A good leader can effect change in an organization. Verb, noun, verb. The receiver uses an analog circuit. The inductor is the analogue of the mass. The analog analogue of a summer is an integrator. Use afterward, backward, downward, forward, toward, and upward, rather than afterwards, backwards, downwards, forwards, towards, and upwards. Watch out for single and double “ells.” The system is modeled, and modeling is useful. The figure is labeled, and labeling is useful. The vehicle traveled, and is now traveling. The system is controlled, the poles are canceled, and the instability is due to a cancellation. These spellings are not completely logical. Be careful with spelling the following difficult-to-spell words: accommodate, argument, dependent, desperate, embarrass, gauge, independent, occurrence, precede, proceed, separate, supersede, focuses, focused, focusing.

The words collocate and colocate are distinct, although not all dictionaries have both words. “Colocate” means to locate at the same place, a useful concept for sensors and actuators. Be aware of assure, ensure, and insure. You assure someone who is anxious, you insure your car, and you ensure stability by using a Lyapunov function. Knowledgeable. Acknowledgment. “Cannot” is one word except in very rare instances such as “the controller can not only stabilize the system but also reject disturbances.” For abbreviations and symbols, do not use a font in which the number 1 looks identical to the letter l. If possible, use the lower case script “ell” symbol, that is, “ℓ”, to avoid ambiguity. IEEE CSM uses “parameterize” and “parameterization,” but not “parametrize” and “parametrization.” IEEE CSM uses queuing, not queueing.

Replace spellings such as analyse, behaviour, centralise, centre, colour, diagonalise, emphasise, generalise, honour, optimise, practise, recognise, visualise with analyze, behavior, center, centralize, color, diagonalize, emphasize, generalize, honor, optimize, practice, recognize, visualize

Words to Be Aware of Use “that” for essential (defining) clauses. Use “which” preceded by a comma for nonessential (non-defining) clauses. These rules, which are useful, may take some practice to master. Rules that make writing more precise are often useful. The relative pronoun “which,” which is distinct from the adjective “which,” is preceded by a comma. The words "where" and "whose" can introduce a clause that may be either essential or nonessential. Use a comma when the clause is nonessential, but do not use a comma when the clause is essential.

Never use “this,” “these,” or “they” as nouns. Wrong: This is very useful. Correct: This rule is useful. Wrong: These are useful points. Correct: These points are useful. Likewise, do not use “It” as the subject of a clause. Wrong: It is a stabilizing controller. Right: The PID controller is stabilizing. Replace “get” and “got” with “obtain” and “obtained.” when this meaning is intended.

Replace “like” with “such as”

Do not use “etc.” or “and so forth.” Do not use “as” when you mean “since.” Do not use “e.g.” or “i.e.” Replace “e.g.” with “for example,” “for instance,” or “such as,” and replace “i.e.” with “that is.” Do not use “vs,” “viz,” “cf,” “ca,” or “ibid.” Do not use “w.r.t.” Rather, use “with respect to.” “We recorded experimental data, which are given in Table 1.” Note that “data” is a plural word. Do not use the mathematical symbols inverted-A to denote “for all” or backwards E to denote “there exists.” Do not use double arrows for “implies.” Use English words in mathematical statements. The rotor is unbalanced. We therefore corrected the imbalance.

In IEEE CSM, as in mathematics, the word “or” is an inclusive or. That is, the statement “Either A or B is true” does not preclude the possibility that both A and B are true. If you require an exclusive or, write “Either A or B is true, but not both.” If you followed all of this, you are doing well! Do not use “or” to mean “that is.” Avoid using the word “most” since this word is not precise Replace “based upon” and “depend upon” with “based on” and “depend on.” The word “any” is sometimes problematic in writing mathematics since “any” sometimes means “all” while other times “any” means “some.” Try to avoid using this word in mathematical statements. Use “minimum” as a noun and “minimal” as an adjective. Examples: “The minimal value of f is 2. That is, the minimum of f is 2.” Note that minimum = minimal value. Furthermore, suppose that the minimal value of f is 2, and that f(3) = 2. Then, 3 is the minimizer of f. Note that minimizer means global minimizer, which is a stronger property than local minimizer. The last two comments apply to maximum, maximal, and maximizer. In summary: Use the word “minimum” as a noun, and the word “minimal” as an adjective. Example: “The minimal value of the function f(x) = (3-x)2 is 0. The minimum of f is 0. The minimizer of f is x=3. The value x=3 is a local minimizer and the global minimizer.” Sets have elements. Vectors have components. Matrices have entries. Note the difference between “alternate,” which refers to switching, and “alternative,” which refers to a different choice. The word “alternate” is an adjective and a verb. The word “alternative” is an adjective and a noun. Example: We shall meet on alternate Mondays to discuss an alternative power supply that alternates between high and low voltage. An alternative is to meet on alternate Wednesdays. Note the difference between “different,” “distinct,” “various,” and “alternative.” Examples: The method used in [1] is different from the method used in [3]. Various methods were used to solve this problem. Distinct techniques were used. An alternative method is used in [4].

“The new method has the advantage of speed.” “Advantage” compared to what other methods? “The new method is relatively easy to apply.” Relative to what? In all uses of comparative verbiage such as “The new method is easier to apply,” always clarify to what the comparison refers. Replace “has the ability to,” “is able to,” and “is capable of” with “can.” Change “utilizes” and “makes use of” to “uses.” Never use the imprecise phrase “a number of.” Control engineers can analyze control systems. Control engineers may or might become famous.

Control engineers may use Matlab.

Consider replacing the vague word “other” with one of the words “alternative,” “additional,” or “remaining.” Be aware and beware of the words “actual,” “still,” “even,” and “such,” which sometimes are used to compensate for weak sentence structure. The word “various” is often more appropriate than “different.” Not good: “We consider different cases.” Good: “We consider various cases,” which is more concise than “We consider a variety of cases.” Beware of the word “common” since this word has two separate meanings. The technical meaning of “common” is “shared” as in “a common denominator” or a “common power source.” The word “common” also means “ordinary” or “everyday,” but this usage is imprecise and somewhat colloquial. Try to avoid this usage of the word “common.” Do not confuse “principle” and “principal.” Principle is a noun as in “the principles of motion.” However, principal is a noun or an adjective as in “the principal of the school” and “the principal method.” Example: The principal taught the principles of the principal design method. Be careful of the distinctions among the words "instant", "instants," "instance," and "instances." Use “U.S.” as an adjective, and USA for addresses.

Procedures Once a final acceptance decision is communicated, electronic submission of all materials to the Editor-in-Chief is required. Paper copies are not required. Required electronic materials include the following items to be sent to the Editor-in-Chief D. S. Bernstein: 1. A double-spaced PDF version of your entire article, including biographies, with each figure and its caption (see below for caption style) on a separate page at the end of the article. 2. The source file for the article in Word or Latex. Be sure that your figure captions include a statement of permission for all copyrighted material. Remember: It is your responsibility to obtain permission to use copyrighted images. Designate which author is the corresponding author, and include the complete mailing and email address for the corresponding author only. The corresponding author receives galley proofs through email. These galley proofs much be checked with extreme care. 3. A separate, clearly labeled file for each figure. Acceptable file formats are tiff, eps, ps, and jpg, but NOT pdf. Label these files “figure1.eps”. Figures embedded in Word documents or PowerPoint slides cannot be extracted and are not useful. Digital images must be at least 300 dpi at size 4 inches by 4 inches, or at least 300 Kb. 4. A signed copyright form. You must print, sign, scan, and email the first page of the IEEE copyright form. Only one author needs to sign. The copyright form is attached to this document. 5.

Final Instructions for Use After Acceptance Here are the final instructions for sending the files for your article after acceptance. Please read and follow these instructions carefully. I have written them to be 100% clear and foolproof, but confusion arises from time to time. So if anything is not clear, please email me asap. A.

Create a complete and final Word or LATEX source file (with possible BIB file) with all references, sidebars, figures, and captions.

Be sure that the email address and phone number of the corresponding author are in the paper so that IEEE can contact him/her to proof the galleys when they are ready.

Create a PDF file of the entire Word or compiled LATEX document. IEEE must have a complete PDF version.

In addition to the source and PDF documents, create a separate file for each figure without caption. All figures must be in jpg, ps, or equivalent.
