LearnEnglish – British Council Hi Do Mi Soe, two hours a day is a lot, especially if you are working in an English speaking environment! If you can manage that much time it will certainly help, but don't feel that you have to. Really I'd recommend finding what you are comfortable with you'll make more progress if you are enjoying what you do and are motivated to do it than you will if you force yourself to do more just because you think you should or you make yourself study when you are tired etc. Neil Like · Commented on by Neil Stewart McLaren · 41 mins ChaNida Kanmuang Which one is correct between "each country" and "each countries"? LearnEnglish – British Council Hi Rania Ismail El Sayeg, yes if you want to study at university you have to take the Academic test, not the General one. It's not a question of being harder or easier both tests are assessed using the same bands, but there are differences in the criteria to reflect the different skills required. 1 · May 26 at 4:26pm
LearnEnglish – British Council Hi Nhật Hạ, there is no fixed amount of time you should listen to as much as you feel comfortable with. I don't think it's helpful to listen to things because you feel you have to do a certain amount of work. It's better to listen because you want to, because you're interested in what you're listening to or because you want to find out something from it. Yes, if you're doing exam practice then you should do it in the same way as you would do it in the real exam, but exam practice should only be one small part of your listening. You should be listening to news, podcasts, film and TV shows, music, education videos lots of things! And with those, it will be most useful and productive if you choose things you actually enjoy. Finally, it's better to listen a little every day than it is to listen a lot once or twice a week! That's my advice! Neil Like ·

By the given examples from Week 2 (course Understanding Ielts) seemed to me you don't have to worry about pronunciation as much as you use the correct ORDER and EXPRESSIONS when answering. For example the video with the two Korean girls (about describing a wild animal), the first lady behaved seriously and had a few mistakes compared to the second, which in my opinion behaved way infomally to the occasion and mispronounced a lot. But according to what was said there, the second one got a better grade. Why? What should I be concerned the most about this test? Vocabulary? Fluency? Like · Reply · 1 · May 26 at 3:08pm Alister Widdowson That's a good question. The important thing is how we actually say it. SOS is said as three separate letters. 'Ess Oh Ess' while SAT is said as a word. we then have to think about the first sound we say (not the first letter that's important). the first sound in SOS is an 'e' sound (like in Egg) that's a vowel sound so we need to use 'an'. with SAT the first sound is 's' (link in snake) which is a consonant sound meaning we use 'a'. (99) Hi everyone and welcome to our live language... LearnEnglish – British Council
LearnEnglish – British Council Hi Ahmad Harb, this is a very common question, and 'clubhouse' is the most common example cited. If the word limit was two or more words it would not be a problem and neither would your second example. If however you were asked for a single word then of course that would be different. If in doubt yo can always use a hyphen as hyphenated words are counted as as a single word. 2) All of these formats are fine (again provided you remain within the word limit). The modern style for writing dates is to omit the ordinal symbol (st, nd, rd etc.) and to simply write the number and month 22 January or January 22. But if you prefer to write 22nd that's fine too. And it makes no difference whether you put the number first or last. 3) Standard is 8.30, but either would be acceptable. 4) I can't think of where you would have to do this, but if you did, then use a comma. 5) If an article is required in order for the sentence to be grammatically correct it will either be included in the printed text or it will make up one of the words required. Again this would not be typical. Neil Like · 3 · Commented on by Neil Stewart McLaren · May 26 at 3:57pm

Unlike · Reply · 1 · May 26 at 2:45pm LearnEnglish – British Council Hi Dung Max, using academic vocabulary helps, but it is only one part of the assessment lexical resource. On its own, simply using 'academic words' is not enough how well you answer the question, how wellorganised and presented your arguments are, and how grammatically accurate your writing is are all equally important. Xuan Minh Nguyen I'm not an educator, but i want to share.with you some tips: 1st you need to study grammar rules carefully and improve your expressions through writing to construct ideas. At.the.same.time u can practice.speaking to yourself, describing everything around you. The smallest things will add up to your quick and correct responses in any unexpected situations. If we just practice in some limited topics, when it comes to a daily but untouched.one, we can be.very silly and clumsy in handling the situation. In brief, try to translate.every.of.your thoughts into English everyday. At first, the translation is slow.and unatural, but later on it will be fater and more.efficient Like · 1 · May 26 at 3:12pm Mustafa S Mahdi Thanks Ann Like · May 26 at 9:27pm Mustafa S Mahdi Thanks Xuan Like · May 26 at 9:27pm Write a reply... The more you read the more you become familiar with the way the language works. You not only pick up new words, but also whole phrases. That means that gradually when you speak you'll find that you don't have to translate every words in your head from your mother tongue. Also watch some short videos and start and stop them and mimic what they say. Worrying about a missed answer makes it more difficult to get the next answer so you just have to move on without worrying too much. Thank you very much Like · Reply ·
3 · May 26 at 3:19pm
Alister Widdowson The most important thing is to practice as much as you can. listening to music and films is a great idea but it is quite difficult because they speak quickly and use unusual words. When I learn another language , first i watch a film with no subtitles, then i watch again with subtitles in the foreign language and finally i watch again with English subtitles. of course you have to really like the film but i find this helps me build up to understanding gradually and i get a lot out of it. Like · 2 · May 26 at 3:22pm Ko Hein I tried to watch movies as you suggested. But it is so boring and I must be patient. At first, I concentrate learning english watching movies. Alister Widdowson There are lots of books available to help with IELTS. My favourites are the IELTS past papers books which are published by Cambridge. they give you the chance to practice with real past exams and give you guidance and example answers in the back. Like · 3 · May 26 at 2:54pm Ana Virtudes Moreno Sánchez Thanks so much. Then I will look for those books and maybe will take IELTS instead of CPE. At least by now, haha. Like · May 26 at 2:56pm Alister Widdowson CAE and CPE are a bit different from IELTS. the biggest difference is that those are exams aimed at a specific level of English while people of all levels can take IELTS. So, if someone is an intermediate user of English then they would not do CAE or CPE as they are simply too hard and they would fail. Anyone can take IELTS as there is no pass mark it is available to anyone. Also, CAE and CPE have another paper the use of English paper which have questions about specifiic grammar and vocabulary points. Like · 1 · May 26 at 2:57pm

Alister Widdowson Good luck Decem. Remember to slow down in the exam, speak loud and clear and whenever possible plan what you are going to say particularly in part two. With 24 hours to go it is important to get some rest, relax and do some gentle revision of the things you have done in preparation for the exam. you aren't going to learn a huge amount in a day! Caro Burau Hello I have two questions: First, is it allowed to use abbreviations in the IELTS test? Unfortunately I haven´t grasped this information in one of the exercises this week. Second, what kind of paper / booklet do we get during the listening test to write the answers down? I mean, there are two types of papers, the one for notes and the final answer sheet and does the one for notes contain the questions like multiple choice again or is it just a blank paper? Thanks! Unlike · Reply · 1 · May 26 at 2:49pm LearnEnglish – British Council Hi Caro Burau, yes abbreviations are allowed the advice you mentioned did not say never to use abbreviations, but suggested that you should check them at the end and decide if you should write them out in full. Abbreviations are not universal so sometimes they are different in other languages, or are not used in English, which would mean losing a point. Everyday abbreviations like km, pm etc. are fine of course. Neil Like · Commented on by Neil Stewart McLaren
