IGCSE at Tenby International School Penang Foreword Dear Parents and Students, This booklet provides information about the educational programmes on offer at Tenby International School Penang during Years 10 and 11. It gives some information about the courses Tenby International School Penang will run and the choices that have to be made by students at this stage of their educational career. A range of experience is achieved by providing a core of compulsory subjects, a set of optional subjects for students to choose from, and a set of guidelines for making these choices. The programme of study at Tenby International School Penang for students in Years 10 and 11 is based on the programmes offered by the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) which have offered IGCSE subjects as an integral part of their international provision for many years. The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) has been designed for 14 to 16 year olds and aims to prepare students for further academic success, including progression to A-Levels, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, and to equip students will the skills needed for immediate employment. IGCSE is broadly equivalent in standard to the British GCSE and is recognised as evidence of ability by academic institutions and employers around the world. The IGCSE curriculum allows teaching to be placed in a localised context, making it relevant in different regions. It is also suitable for students whose first language may not be English and this is acknowledged throughout the examination process. However, it is essential to note that English is the language of instruction at Tenby International School Penang and as such students do require a set level of competency in this area in order to achieve their potential and to be able to access the programmes of study with ease. Grading is on an eight-point scale (A*–G) and grades A to E are equivalent to ‘O’ Level Grades A to E. In some countries, IGCSE qualifications will satisfy the entry requirements for university. In others, they are widely used as a preparation for A Level, AS, International Baccalaureate and US Advanced Placement courses. Grade C in IGCSE English satisfies the English proficiency requirements of many universities in the UK and other Anglophone countries. Before making their choices, students can get more information about course content from their subject teachers and their Form Teachers will be helping them with the choice procedure. Introduction for Students The rest of this booklet is written for you, although we recommend that you read it together with your parents. In August you will move into year 10 and start a two-year programme of study. This booklet tells you something about your courses over that two-year period. It explains what the IGCSE is about and why you have a choice in some areas but not in others: •

Before You Start Remember that there is a limit to how much information and advice you can get from a booklet like this. Talk with people; ask questions; listen to what they say. Do not choose a subject because your friend is doing it, they may not be in the same group as you and they will not have to live with the consequence of you making the wrong choice. 9

To get a picture of your typical school week for the next two years, it is best to think of two groups of subjects. The first group – the Compulsory subjects - contains certain subjects, which all of you have to study. Here is the list: Compulsory • • • • • •

English 1st Language and English Literature (both subjects are compulsory in Year 10) Chinese 1st Language, Chinese Foreign Language OR French Foreign Language Mathematics (with Additional Mathematics for the most able students) Science - (Biology, Chemistry, Physics - choice of 1, 2 or 3 separate Sciences) PE (non-examination subject but can also be taken as an IGCSE class) PSE (Personal & Social Education; non-examination)

PE and PSE are compulsory for all students in the English Curriculum in Year 10 & 11. In PSE students will be looking at issues concerned with being a ‘World Citizen’ as well as spending time on preparation for life after TIS. PE is compulsory, but students will follow a similar process to the IGCSE options process at the end of Year 9 when they will be able to choose the activities they want to follow in Year 10 & 11. The second group of subjects – the options – is where you have some choice. These subjects are as follows: Optional • • • • • • • • •

What to aim for – The IGCSE and Post–16 education: English, Mathematics, Science and the optional subjects lead to a qualification called the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). IGCSE grades are from A* to G. The IGCSE gives students an excellent foundation from which to choose the subject areas they wish to take at Post – 16, whether it is the A-Level programme or the IB Diploma (IBDP) programme or the Advanced Placement Programme (AP) Reasons why – Explaining the plan In making decisions about selection of subjects, parents and students should take into account the following factors: a)

Goals: Students should be considering their options for the future, and setting goals they hope to attain. These should be: • Short-term goals: e.g. achieving a high grade in Mathematics this year (be realistic but aspirational!) • Medium-term goals: e.g. choosing, and setting specific targets in, IGCSE subjects • Long-term goals: e.g. planning what you want to do on completing Years 12 and 13; what courses you might want to study at university; where you might want to study; and so on.

NOTE: Long term-goals especially can be readjusted as interests change and students mature, but remember the useful adage: IF YOU AIM AT NOTHING, YOU ARE GOING TO HIT IT EVERY TIME! b)

Do some research: Students should find out more about what each subject is about, and should investigate the jobs, courses and universities they may be interested in as long-term goals. Using the Internet to access university websites is a very useful means of obtaining the required information.

Consider the course pre-requisites: Students should check: • The subjects required before they will be allowed entry into a university course in which they're interested • The grade level (marks) required. • The level of English skill needed.

As well as checking the Internet, for further information, students can also make an appointment with their Form Teacher to discuss their goals, their options, and their progress. Be aware that informed decisions are based on the gathering of evidence. d)

Consider what subjects you enjoy: Students should select subjects they'll like and enjoy (after they've ensured they're covering their prerequisites).

Consider what you're good at: Students should realistically assess how capable they are in various subjects, and choose those in which they'll achieve best.

Listen carefully to advice and ideas from parents, teachers, friends, etc. However, remember that you will be in the hot seat, studying the subject, completing the assignments and using the results to shape your future. CHOOSE WHAT SUITS YOU BEST!

NOTE: DON'T CHOOSE SUBJECTS JUST BECAUSE YOUR FRIENDS ARE TAKING THEM: This is the worst reason for choosing a subject! Why do you have to do all of the Compulsory Subjects? No secondary school student’s curriculum could possibly be complete without Mathematics, Science and (in an English language school) English. These are the first three subjects on the list. Virtually all higher education institutions worldwide expect you to have a qualification in English and Mathematics. Developing language skills is a very important part of today’s global society and the skills you learn in developing a new language are transferable to nearly every other subject. Why do you have to choose Optional Subjects? The main reason is time. Add up the total number of compulsory subjects and options together. In a week, how many periods, on average, would each subject get? This would be nothing like enough to get you anywhere near IGCSE standard. To study all the subjects in the sort of depth appropriate to your age would require a school day about twice as long as ours, and think of the homework!

So why can’t you just choose your favourite subjects? There are two reasons. The first is a theoretical reason – we think it is important for your development as an educated person that you study a broad range of subjects. The Compulsory and Optional subjects in combination should be broad enough to offer you experience in different areas of learning. The second reason is more practical. You may have an idea about what you are going to do for your career, but you are probably not certain yet. It is most important that you do not close any career doors – in other words, that you do not leave out subjects, or types of study, that you may need later (this is another reason why we insist that you take the compulsory subjects). What are the reasons for making your choice? Does it really make any difference which courses you choose? Let us look at some of the reasons for choosing some subjects and not choosing others. You may think that a particular subject will be useful for a future course or career you have in mind. That is a good reason. For instance, if you want to go into urban planning, Geography would provide some useful background. However, there are very few courses and careers that require particular IGCSE subjects, with the exception of English, Mathematics and Science. You do not need an IGCSE in Music to be a successful business manager, or an IGCSE in Art and Design to be an architect. However, good grades in a broad range of subjects are more important as a foundation for further specialised study. The business manager needs good communication skills and the architect must have a sound understanding of mathematics. What next? How you choose your options After reading this booklet carefully and discussing your thoughts with your parents, teachers and friends, complete an Options Form. The creation of a student’s course of study is also influenced by the blocks in which subjects are offered. Some combinations of subjects are not available. Students can only choose one Option from each block. See the separate Options Form to see which particular choices are available. Year 10 and 11 Assessments Subject departments use a variety of assessment techniques throughout each year, including peer and self assessment, teacher assessment of group and individual work, and the marking of tests. In addition, there are internal examinations for all students in July of Year 10. Reports will be issued to parents indicating levels of attainment and effort, and examination scores (where appropriate), with comments by the subject teachers and each child’s Form Teacher at the end of the academic year in July. In November, February and May, parents will receive a Progress Report, which will provide an indication as to how their child is progressing with the IGCSE Programme. These reports will provide information regarding effort in a particular subject as well as attainment. Students will also be given end of topic/unit tests in some subjects, which help to reinforce learning covered in class. The exact nature of the assessments in each subject is contained within the specific subject headings within this booklet. However, in general, each subject will have an examination component that students will sit for in May of year 11. A number of subjects also have a compulsory course work component as part of their assessment. Some IGCSE subjects offer students the options of Extended or Core Papers. All students at Tenby International School Penang will be undertaking the Extended Course. This will afford the students the full option of grades. In some instances, the subject teachers will insist that a student has to enter for the Core Papers because it would not be in their interest to enter the Extended examination (generally because they have not shown the potential to attain a C grade during the course of the programme). This would be the exception rather than the rule. School/Parent Communication The education of all students is clearly a partnership between the teachers and the parents. To this end an effective line of communication between these two groups is essential. The Form Teacher should be the first point of contact when there is any level of concern. These teachers will have the most contact with the students and are the best position to gain an all round perspective of progress. The most effective means of communication is through the Student Diary, which will be checked weekly by the Form Teacher. Parents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the diary and are asked to sign it each week. Additionally staff can readily be contacted by e-mail. By maintaining effective communication channels, potential problems can be alleviated. There are additional opportunities during the year for parents and staff to communicate with regard to student progress. Often class work and homework books indicate areas for celebration and at times, areas for concern. When a pattern of concern arises, the Form Teacher will contact parents to discuss support for the student.

The IGCSE and ICE Award The IGCSE Main Features The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) was developed to meet the needs of educators and parents throughout the world for a curriculum specifically tailored to international needs. IGCSE provides a curriculum and methods of assessment appropriate for a wide ability range. It is designed as a two-year programme leading to a certificate that is internationally recognised as equivalent in standard to the British GCSE and International GCE ‘O’ level examinations. The important principle of the IGCSE examination is that students are rewarded for positive achievement – what they know, understand and can do – rather than being penalised for an accumulation of errors. As well as testing whether students can recall information and present it in an orderly manner, the curriculum encourages: • • • • • •

An investigative approach The development of oral and practical skills The use of initiative to solve problems The application of skills, knowledge and understanding The ability to undertake individual projects and coursework and to work as part of a team. The IGCSE examination is suitable for virtually the whole ability range.

It has an 8-point scale of grades: A*, A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. ¾ ¾ ¾

The ICE Award The International Certificate of Education (ICE) Award is a certificate, which may be gained in addition to the IGCSE if certain criteria are met. In order to qualify for the ICE, students must enter and sit for at least seven subjects. These must include English, a second Language, a Social Science/ Humanities subject (Geography, History or English Literature), Sciences, Mathematics and a Creative, Technical and Vocational subject (Art and Design, ICT, Drama, Music, D&T or Business Studies). Students must obtain at least a grade G in each of the seven subjects as specified above. • • •

A Distinction is awarded if a student obtains grade A in five subjects and grade C or above in two further subjects. A Merit is awarded if a student obtains grade C or above in five subjects and grade F or above in two further subjects. A Pass is awarded if a student obtains grade G or above in seven subjects.

IGCSE CHINESE FOREIGN LANGUAGE Why is Chinese Foreign Language so important? The Chinese language has become more important globally: speak the language and you can speak to millions of people! Did you know that the number of students learning Chinese is the fastest growing among all foreign languages? Quite often demand in Chinese classes are higher that Chinese teachers available, because not only students, also many business(wo)men and employees start learning Chinese. With an economy growing by leaps and bounds, the importance of China on the world stage is increasingly felt. Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world and is spoken not only in China but also in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and many other places in South-East Asia. Significant populations of people who speak Chinese also live in urban centres around the world. It is one of the key languages in the world culturally and in business. Learning Mandarin Chinese is a challenging but rewarding experience: no doubt that written Chinese is difficult to learn but it is an extraordinary and agreeable experience through which you can immerse yourself in a different culture and develop lifelong skills.
