Implementing electrodynamic tethers without need for a space plasma Explanation This invention uses an electrostatic generator like a van de Graff to separate the charges on two sections of the tether. The opposite charges are created on the tether such that the current flows in the required direction to generate the desired maneuver on closing the switch.

Advantages over electrodynamic tethers -
Enables electric tether use in any region irrespective of the presence of a space plasma.
-
Reduces or eliminates the occurrences of electric arcs.
-
Can easily produce higher currents and so higher propulsion.
