This International Conference is a celebratory event in honour of Michele Tansella, at the time of his retirement. His Colleagues, both in Italy and elsewhere, mark the occasion by considering the great contribution he has made to the organisation and evaluation of mental health services in community settings and to epidemiological psychiatry. Michele Tansella has made mental health services in Verona known across the world, and has been influential in the organisation of mental health care in many countries. In the years from 1970 to 2013 he has trained more than 350 Italian academic and non-academic psychiatrists, and has built up a formidable team of mental health researchers. He has published about 300 scientific papers in international peer-reviewed Journals, as well as about 100 chapters in international books and has edited and written many monographs and books (some of them translated in many languages). In 1979 he started the Verona Psychiatric Case Register, which is still alive. In 1992 he founded the Journal Epidemiologia e Psichiatria Sociale (EPS) (published by Il Pensiero Scientifico Editore), which since 2011 is published by Cambridge University Press under the name of Epidemiology and Psychiatric Sciences (EPS). This Journal, under the Editorship of Michele Tansella, provides a forum for exchanging views and original data in the area of epidemiological psychiatry and health service research, with the aim to improve the quality of everyday practice. Since 1987, under Michele Tansella’s leadership, Verona is WHO “Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health and Service Evaluation”. The papers published in 2012 by the Verona WHO Centre team produced an IF of 390. During the International Conference the book dedicated to Michele Tansella entitled “The Global Challenge of Improving Mental Health Care” and edited by G. Thornicroft, M. Ruggeri & D. Goldberg, Wiley, London, 2013, will be presented. The book has 25 chapters, written by Colleagues around the world who collaborated with Michele Tansella over the years. The list of Authors includes most Speakers and Chair Persons of this Conference, as well as D. Fowler (London), A. Jablensky (Perth), D. Rose (London), S. Sytema (Groningen), E. Susser (New York), J.J. Vazquez-Barquero (Santander) and many Colleagues from the WHO Collaborating Centre of Verona.
