LION’S SHARE – Woking Lions Club received a cheque for £700 from the family of Lion Brian White, who died recently. Some of the money, which was raised in Brian’s memory, will provide a special chair at Meath School in Ottershaw, which is for mentally disabled children from the area. The Sensory Shell Chair helps children who have sensory processing disorders, such as autism, to make sense of their world by limiting environmental stimuli. The chair is especially effective in a noisy classroom. Netty Russell, Brian’s long-term partner, is pictured with Lions’ President John Cooper, Brian’s son Christopher and his grandson Morgan

Thought of the week

Pilgrimage of trust is good

Trail trek triumph FORMER Woking Football Club Chairman John Buchanan has raised £3,000 for education charity the Knights Foundation by walking the 45km Inca Trail. John, who completed the trek in Peru with his daughter Kerry, described it as ‘a challenging but unbelievably satisfying once-in-a -lifetime experience’. Kerry and John, who is a director of Sutton Green Golf Club and owner of J C Buchanan Building Services, spent a few days acclimatising themselves to the conditions before embarking on the

trek, which was spread over four days. They had to climb to 4,200m above sea level, walk through steepening woods into cloud forest and climb thousands of steps, as well as spend the nights camping. They experienced first-hand the contrasting Andean elements of scorching sun and freezing winds. John, who has become a patron of the Knights Foundation, said: “A very big thank you to you all for helping support such a worthy cause and giving back to the local community.”

LOFTY AMBITIONS – John Buchanan and his daughter Kerry

EARLIER this month I was in a congregation singing these words: ‘Bonumestconfidere in Domino, bonumsperare in Domino’ – which translates as ‘It is good to trust and hope in the Lord’. This is a helpful mantra, regardless of our politics, our personal convictions or, simply, as we negotiate our daily lives. We would hope, wouldn’t we, that people of faith would trust and hope in God? We might even say (a word I try to use rarely) that we ‘should’ do so, otherwise what is the point of faith? But the words of that simple chant say that it is good to do so. It is good because it honours God, and it is good because it is good for our health and wellbeing. Not least it teaches us that we do not belong to ourselves but to God. When life seems uncertain, or when losses and hurts press in on us, it is good that we consciously choose to trust. We might go as far as to say that our life together is a pilgrimage of trust. Particularly in the face of unexpected events, we discover, recall, and put into practice the truth that trusting and hoping in God is good indeed.
