Vitebsk State Medical University, Dept. of Surgery, Vitebsk, Belarus, 2Vitebsk State Medical University, Dept. of Therapy №2, Vitebsk, Belarus INTRODUCTION & OBJECTIVES: It is a well-known association of abdominal obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes with low serum testosterone levels and erectile dysfunction (ED). However, there are no studies, which show correlation between the amount of local visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and ED. The aim of this research was to determine the amount of perirenal VAT in men with and without ED and assess its correlation with serum total testosterone levels. MATERIAL & METHODS: 78 men aged 25 to 55 were enrolled in this study, the average age being (M±σ) 38,11±10,81years. All surveyed were given a questionnaire IIEF-5 (International Index of Erectile Function). Consequently, 35 patients with ED and 43 men without ED were allocated. Ultrasound measurements of perirenal visceral adipose tissue amount were performed to all patients by conventional methods. All patients were measured for serum total testosterone levels. The results of the research in both groups were compared using nonparametric statistics Mann-Whitney U-test for independent groups. The Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (r) was used to assess correlation between serum total testosterone levels and the amount of perirenal VAT.
