INDEPENDENT READING REQUIREMENTS CP English 2013-2014

“You don’t have to burn books to destroy culture. Just get people to stop reading them.” -Author, Ray Bradbury

UGH! Why do we have to do this?? v To encourage you to engage in reading for the enjoyment of it (crazy, I know!) v To give you the opportunity read something that YOU choose o If you hate reading, you just haven’t found the right book yet. Seriously. v To use the words and ideas of the books you read to become more educated, well-rounded, compassionate people. PART ONE Project Requirements: v You are required to read at least one book outside of class each month (unless otherwise noted) o The book must be 200 pages or more—Sorry, Captain Underpants fans! o The book must be age appropriate—i.e. Lemony Snicket is OUT…Diary of a Wimpy Kid? Nope, sorry! o At least one of the four books that you read this year, must be non-fiction v The books may not be books that you have read previously—I suggest that double check your book choice with Mrs. Byron v The novels that we read in class (or that you read in class last year) do not count as independent reading (duh.) v Upon completing the book, complete a “One-Pager” and turn it in on the assigned due date. v You may read as many additional books for pleasure as you like, but I will give you extra credit for only one additional book J v Donating books that you love to my classroom library is also a good idea. I approve of doing that. v Don’t have a clue about what to read?? o Mrs. Byron can recommend a few you might like o Consult the classroom list “101 Books My Reluctant Readers Love to Read” for ideas o Pull a few off the shelf and take a gander…just make sure to put them back!!

“When cultural traditions and the feelings of others are never experienced, there is less understanding of what other people feel.” -Author, Maryanne Wolf “
