Diction, metaphor, font—all are writer’s tools. Characters can also be used as tools. Some characters, like Pastor Dan, for instance, may function mainly to move the plot along. Pastor Dan acts a catalyst. Without him, it is unlikely that Lev advances on his journey of personal growth. Other characters may deliver important information. Shusterman uses CyFi to add to the unwind rules—e.g., people can typically only receive brain bits; money allows a privileged few to circumvent the rules. Still others are used to develop other, more important characters. Choose a character in your book who is NOT a protagonist or anatagonist. Write a THESIS that advances a claim about that character’s function in the text. _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ • • • • • •
