Under an expansion of the existing Construction Products Directive (CPR), standards for flame spread, heat release, smoke production, light transmittance, flaming droplets and acid release have been defined and categorised into seven performance levels - led by the flame and heat release parameter - called Euroclasses. To assist the market in the specification of Euroclasses from these seven options, The British Standards Institute has published an amendment to the widely used BS6701 standard under the reference BS6701:2016+A1:2017.

Better Together / February 2018

BS6701:2016+A1:2017 Take the Excel Challenge

BS6701 is a well-established, and frequently referred to source for generic, vendor independent best practice and is referenced not only in tenders and technical specifications for data and telecommunications cabling, but also in related British Standards. Download a copy of our pocket guide Your Guide to Understanding CPR which explains what CPR is and Excel’s commitment to bringing you products to ensure your installation is compliant with the standards.

Important Questions To Ask Your Suppliers of Data Cabling 1. Do you have copper and fibre cabling that meets or exceeds Euroclass CCa.S1b.d2.a2 which is the minimum standard defined in BS6701:2016+A1:2017? (Note - S1 is not compliant) Excel offers Category 6, and 6A screened and unscreened copper cables and tight buffered fibre optic cables that meet or exceed the above specification. 2. If you have products that meet this specification can you provide data sheets, and the legally required Declaration of Performance (DOP) which is based upon the Notified body test report & certificate? Excel data sheets and DOPs are freely available on our website. 3. Do you have stock of cables that as minimum meet Cca.S1b.d2.a2. (Note – Companies answering positively to Question 1 may not have invested in stocks, creating potential project delays) Excel has large stocks of all products offered that meet or exceed the above specification and have successfully delivered a number of compliant projects with others in progress. 4. What uplift, if any, are you applying to tight buffered fibre optic cables that meet Cca.s1b.d2.a2 compared to previously supplied LS0H cables? Excel offers – from stock – as standard Cca.s1a.d0.a1 across its range of single and multimode fibre cables – exceeding the requirements of the standard with no cost uplift. Excel will continue to develop its product offering, and the wide range of support documentation already available around this topic, but in the meantime, for further information on the market leading position we have taken in this important area of progression in building safety and market standards please contact any of our sales team.

The Difference Between the Euroclasses Flame Spread When selecting a CPR-compliant cable, it is important to consider which Euroclass to select. In the UK the aforementioned BS6701 republication has defined the minimum recommended standard for the market as Cca.s1b.d2.a2. The following images in the table show the difference between two differently classified cables, which gives a strong indication of the retardance to fire and the impact that a fire could cause.

When it comes to video surveillance, lighting is one of the most important factors in image quality. As lighting conditions fade and shift depending on the time of day and environmental factors, a surveillance camera’s ability to capture evidentiary detail can decrease. Avigilon has developed two new surveillance camera solutions that can address and overcome challenging lighting environments: the H4 IR PTZ (infrared pan-tilt-zoom) and H4 Thermal camera lines.

Better Together / February 2018

The Importance of Lighting and Image Quality with Avigilon

Infrared Imaging Lights Up the Night: To overcome the darkness of a scene, artificial sources of light can be integrated with a camera, the most common of which is infrared (IR) illumination. For example, total darkness is no match for Avigilon’s newly launched H4 IR PTZ camera line, which combines a powerful 45x zoom lens and zoomable IR technology to detect objects up to 250 m (820 ft.) away. The camera’s IR projection angle and distance automatically adjust based on camera zoom lens movement, ensuring the scene is illuminated consistently across the field of view for high-quality, detailed images. Thermal Imaging Glows in The Dark: Thermal imaging is all about detecting the different heat signatures that people and objects emit. Thermal cameras detect these heat signatures and displays them as shades of grey. The Avigilon H4 Thermal camera line operates beyond the visible spectrum. It has been designed to detect the movement of people and vehicles even in areas with poor visibility, challenging lighting conditions, absolute darkness, and partly camouflaged objects. In addition, the camera utilises patented Avigilon self-learning video analytics to send notifications to operators when it detects an activity that may require further investigation, helping you take decisive action when it’s needed most. Together, these two Avigilon cameras work to offer an all-season, all lighting surveillance solution. They can even work in tandem: The H4 Thermal provides excellent detection of objects, which in turn can alert operators to zoom in and investigate with further detail using the H4 IR PTZ. Truly, a match that conquers the dark. For further details on the full range of Avigilon products speak to the team on 0800 75 75 65.

Connecting the Internet of Things (IoT) The Internet of Things (IoT) can be daunting to understand considering the rapid proliferation of new IoT devices showing up in both our personal lives as well as in virtually every industry. These IoT devices will require IP connectivity and – in many cases – network-delivered power. Organisations are moving towards more IoT connected devices in an effort to drive down operational costs savings, and upgrade building automation systems to achieve efficiency gains, such as in HVAC and lighting as just two examples. This puts increasing demands on already-strained enterprise access networks and support resources. Before implementing any IoT device on your network you should take the 4 following components into consideration during your project planning:

1. Identify IT Resources Give some thought to the resources you have available to help with deployment as well as on-going support. Through use of the right toolset, many organisations are finding success in enabling lower-level technicians to find more problems on their own or provide them with the ability to escalate more effectively with actionable visibility.

2. Determine Network Connectivity Requirements Every deployment and network environment will have its own set of unique network connectivity requirements. Spending time up front to identify what these parameters are will save time and frustration down the road by having a standardised and agreed upon network connectivity requirement.

3. Qualify Network Services When organisations deploy or troubleshoot IoT devices, the most fundamental component is the ability to ensure the network services required to support the connected device are configured and working correctly.

4. Understand IoT Device Configuration During both the deployment and ongoing support, you should have an understanding as to how your devices are configured and managed, even if a third party will be doing the initial install. Today, most device vendors have some type of application (cloud-based or smart phone) to facilitate device configuration.

Conclusion The proliferation of IoT connected devices in today’s network environment is challenging organisations to do more with the same staff. It also creates the potential for increased complexity of project management across organisational silos and outside vendors. Therefore, as you embark on managing and supporting the deployment of more and more network connected devices, give some thought to how you can expand your ability to manage the project by enabling more resources, build collaboration across teams, and ensure you have the visibility you need to control the finger pointing when it begins. 10

High street retailers face tougher trading conditions than ever before. With increased competition from online sales, tighter household budgets and squeezed margins, it’s never been more important to innovate.

There is, however, a solution to many of these perceived disadvantages for the traditional retail stores. A simple answer that almost every store already uses: CCTV, or more accurately – video surveillance.

There are many ways to innovate within retail, from advertising and promotions, store layout, keeping up with market trends, and line extensions, to name a few. There is, however, one overriding need for any innovation: information. As the saying goes, information is power.

Dahua Technology examine the latest technological innovations in analysing video, and the advances in artificial intelligence within surveillance systems, to show how the humble CCTV system can become a powerful business and marketing tool to rival the data capture of online retailers.

Online Advantage?

Read the full article and discover the hidden power of a surveillance system.

This is an area where traditional retailers have struggled against their online counterparts, where technology enables online stores to know so much more about their customers. Website cookies and analytics mean online companies can tell you exactly who their customers are, how long they spend ‘in store’, even their age and gender. This gives online companies a powerful advantage by being able to specifically target their customers with tailored offers and messages.
