Business, Arts and Design Innovation Report 2009-2010

Business/Arts & Design

Innovation Report 2009-2010 Dean’s Message This Innovation Report is the first to be produced for the Centre for Business and the Centre for Arts and Design. It showcases the excellent work our staff and students have accomplished in collaboration with industry, community and academic partners. The applied research projects and innovative activities that we undertake demonstrate our strong commitment to the sectors we serve and also signal our concern and involvement in various academic and societal issues. I would like to point out that much of the research and innovation in these Centres is done in an interdisciplinary fashion and with numerous George Brown internal partners. My thanks goes to staff members and students from Business, Arts and Design who have been involved in these activities, as well as our colleagues from other academic and corporate divisions

Maureen Loweth

who have participated collaboratively in the work.

Dean of Business Arts & Design George Brown College

Given the strategic priority our college has given to research and innovation in recent years, as well as the new funding that has been made available to colleges for these endeavours, we are experiencing an exciting transition within George Brown College. I am happy to report that since April 2007 Business, Arts and Design has received external funding for a total of 22 applied research projects totaling $426,873. An additional $337,617 was received in in-kind funding from industry partners associated with the research. To promote greater staff involvement in applied research and innovation activities, our Research and Innovation Office has also made a pool of funds available on an annual basis for project “seed funding” which faculty members can apply for. We were awarded a total of $76,128 for 10 projects in addition to the external funding previously mentioned. This is a grand total of $503,001 in funding for 32 projects. I would especially like to acknowledge Luigi Ferrara, Director of the Centre for Arts and Design, and Jean-Paul Amore, Instructor and Co-ordinator of Game Programs in the School of Design, who together account for the oversight of half of all the applied research projects undertaken to date in our division. There are also very interesting scholarly activities highlighted in this report. I hope that more ideas for research, innovation and scholarly activities within Business, Arts and Design are prompted by reading this report and that activities such as these have a meaningful and lasting impact in our local community and in the world. Sincerely,

Maureen Loweth, Dean Centre for Business, Arts & Design, Toronto

Heart Vest Monitor Angella Mackey’s interest in the fusion of fashion and function brought her to the School of Fashion Studies to learn the technical aspects of garment making. As part of a multidisciplinary research team, she applied her knowledge practically to develop an electronicsembedded vest that can continuously monitor a wearer’s heart—making it fast and easy for medical staff to check heart history and address problems. Funded by a government research grant and a private sector partner, the team, led by Fashion professor Marsha Jorgensen, was given the task of developing a comfortable garment that patients could wear under their clothes for up to 23.5 hours a day and up to 30 days at a time. As they worked their way through the steps of development and testing of the vest, the team members, who also included Collaborative Nursing program student Gita McAllister and fellow Fashion student Jenna Patterson, shared skills from their fields. “Input from other disciplines helps us understand who we’re designing for,” says Mackey. “Gita’s input is especially helpful—she’ll tell us if there’s no way a nurse would be able to fit the garment on a patient.” In 2010, the development of the Heart Monitoring Vest continues with industry partners Ocorant Inc. and Ross + Doell Industrial Design & Brand Development.
