Energy consumption The higher purchase costs of high-quality LED products reduce the lifecycle costs and offer high saving potential for fleet operators in particular. Energy consumption is increasingly in the spotlight of customers. With our LED products, energy consumption is reduced by up to 50% in headlights and 90% in headlights compared to conventional lights.

Xenon

Halogen

Lower fuel costs can finance the majority of the additional investment costs for LED products. The LED modules do not require maintenance or light source replacement, and have an average service life of 20,000 hours. Ongoing operating and failure costs are reduced to a minimum.

Extremely low-maintenance = extremely cost-saving! High-quality LED products are extremely cost-effective in the medium- and long-term due to long replacement intervals.

Service life of halogen light source: 600 h*, Replacement time for halogen light source: 15 min, Repair costs: 50 EUR/h, Drive time with lighting per year: 2,100 h, Fuel costs: 1.35 EUR per litre

P21W bulb service life: 300 h*, Replacement time for light source: 15 min, Repair costs: 50 EUR/h, Drive time with lighting per year: 2,100 h, Fuel costs: 1.35 EUR per litre

After 10 years, around 1,000 EUR per vehicle is saved in fuel costs!

After 10 years, around 650 EUR per vehicle is saved in fuel costs!

* The service life data are based on the B3 value (3% of the light source has failed). Manufacturers often give the Tc (63% of the light source has failed), which is too high for a realistic calculation.

One LED is not the same as any other With HELLA LED products you are opting for high-quality technology, but the considerable reductions in follow-on costs and longer, trouble-free service lives also add up to your advantage. The widespread use of LEDs is the best indication of their clear benefits. However, certain factors must be taken into account. If you want to get the best out of LED technology, thermal management is essential!

With thermal management

Without thermal management

Thermal management dissipates heat away from the LEDs and transfers it to the surroundings.

If heat is not dissipated away from the LEDs, hotspots develop. Hotspots reduce the service life of the LEDs significantly and can even cause failure.

The LEDs only achieve their extremely long service life with appropriate thermal management. HELLA takes thermal management into account in all developments.

If no reliable thermal management is implemented, the LEDs are overload and, in the worst case, can even fail.

Thermal management is an absolute must to protect LEDs LEDs are sensitive to heat. If the temperature of the LED gets too high, the diodes can lose their luminous intensity and, in extreme cases, may even be destroyed. HELLA achieves an effective heat flow by choosing thermally conductive materials and by aligning components effectively. Thermal Management dissipates heat away from the LEDs. This means we can guarantee the long service life of our products!

LED lighting: Failure control and electrical connection Operation of LED lights / LED headlights with AC voltage or synchronised DC voltage is not permitted. In the ECE R48 area of application, by law, it is necessary to ensure failure control for LED lights / LED headlights in the vehicle's electrical system through suitable measures. Due to the low power consumption of LED lights, which are distinctly different from a bulb version, the proper functioning of bulb failure control must be checked when they are integrated into vehicle electrical systems. As indicators must be checked by law, we recommend operating the lights only in conjunction with an indicator control unit.

06 | 07

LED indicators and the patented failure check

Legal requirement in all ECE states The indicators on vehicles registered for use on public roads must be monitored. An indicator failure must be communicated to the driver visually or acoustically. In all ECE states, the following holds: A potential failure of the indicator must therefore be monitored by the vehicle. Manufacturers use different control methods for this purpose.

Safe conversion to LED indicators using patented HELLA electronics HELLA supplies electronic ballasts for all HELLA LED indicators which makes it possible to implement the indicator failure display in a diverse range of vehicles. This is necessary if the vehicle manufacturer does not guarantee indicator bulb failure control via the vehicle's electrical system.

However, the failure controls in use today cannot detect simple LED lights and display an error when they are used. Many HELLA LED indicators have integrated failure control electronics. The indicators monitor themselves. They generate an impulse that is evaluated by the electronic ballast. This ballast simulates a 21W bulb which allows them to be used with conventional indicators.

The method is patented by HELLA. There are currently three different ballasts and several different LED indicators available.

Even if a single LED fails, the light will be shown as faulty and the pulse will no longer be generated. In this case, the ballast switches off the bulb simulation and the indicator reports the fault to the driver.

Halogen

Xenon

Halogen, Xenon, LED The most important benefits of LED technology for headlights

New LED module

Safety: Our LED headlight provides excellent light output – using the latest technology! Light colour: Daylight-like light prevents eye fatigue and improves the driver's view of traffic. Energy savings: Due to lower levels of current consumption, fuel consumption is decreased and the load on the alternator is reduced. Service life: LEDs have service lives which are several times longer than standard light sources. Maintenance costs due to lightsource replacement are thus a thing of the past.

We develop in response to current trends! Dispersion, light colour, light distribution and light homogeneity – a lot can be simulated and calculated. But nothing can replace the actual experience of light. That is when we use our light tunnel in Lippstadt. It is the largest of its kind in Europe: 140 metres long and 11 metres wide. The light pattern has to pass its first test here in almost natural surroundings and get through more tests/tuning during headlight development. Test vehicles are in some cases in our light channel a year before they come onto the market.

LED

OneLED Patented production technology and process reliability for LED products without printed circuit board The use of conductive plastic and injected LEDs allows us to use 100% automation. The frame is “injected” around the housing and the lens. This significantly increases air-tightness compared with conventional welding or gluing methods. OneLED

This production technology guarantees a high degree of quality in terms of air-tightness and fault rate. Process faults are excluded, from injection moulding through testing to packaging.

Side marker lamp from HELLA

Appealing night design The large-area, homogeneous illumination of the whole lens from all viewing angles results in optimum visibility and thus maximum safety. New "glowing edges" technology emphasis all contours of the light, generating an impressive, innovative night design for side marker-, position- and clearance light functions.

OneLED from HELLA: Optimum visibility, large illuminated area, including contour lighting

Customer-specific headlights We understand that individuality is important to you! Customer-specific headlights – with a modular design – reduce development costs and make more design freedom an option – even for small numbers of units. The solution: The building block or module. Everything you need is included: The freedom of the design. The logic of the economical series. The latest advanced lighting technology. The security of real HELLA quality.

DynaView® Evo2 A new lighting era DynaView® Evo2 combines the cornering light and fog light safety functions in compact round auxiliary lights which can be universally installed in many different vehicles. When the low beam is switched on, the right or left cornering light is activated automatically and immediately when the indicator is actuated or when the vehicle drives round a bend at a speed of less than 40 km/h. A yaw rate sensor measures the vehicle's angular acceleration and triggers the turn-on signal when the car drives through a curve. At the end of the curve, a dimmer softly fades the extra light. If the reverse gear is engaged, both cornering lights are switched on and ensure broad and bright illumination of the areas along the left and right of the vehicle.

“The cornering light is switched off during normal driving situations on a straight stretch of road.”

“When turning a corner or driving slowly through a curve (up to a speed of 40 km/h), the cornering light is turned on automatically.”

“When driving round a bend up to a speed of 40 km/h, the respective headlight is switched on automatically.”

“In foggy conditions, the cornering light can be switched on manually (both sides) as a fog light.”

The world's first flexible daytime running lights: LEDayFlex Design A current trend in vehicle design is the customisation of headlight design for daytime and night-time driving. The lighting technology that we have further developed with our “LEDayFlex” daytime driving lights is the foundation for exciting design solutions.

Technology “LEDayFlex” light chains with 5 to 8 firmly connected LED light modules can be integrated into an almost infinite number of configurations in the vehicle front-end. In the process, they follow the shape of the vehicle's contours in depth. “LEDayFlex” allows for many different design options as long as they comply with legal regulations. Designs can include a powerful daylight-like light signal during the day and, if desired, in versions with the option to switch over to position lighting, also at night. This gives the designer a powerful system.

Intelligent Battery Sensor – capacity measurement for the battery

IBS battery sensor 1. Shunt on the sensor 2. Connector 3. Sensor module 4. Negative pole terminal 5. Bolt for battery-pole adapter

You need to be able to measure the battery charge status, ageing and any changes to your battery to use the energy in the vehicle electrical system carefully. The Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) informs you about the current energy status, allowing you to plan your energy supply. Function The IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor) sits directly on the negative pole of a battery and records the following data using the integrated shunt and the sensor: The voltage of up to two batteries All incoming/outgoing currents The ambient temperature State of charge/state of health The sensor uses an algorithm specially developed by HELLA and already used for automotive applications to record the state of charge (SOC) and the battery ageing or state of health (SOH). Accurate current measurement Highly accurate measurement of the incoming and outgoing currents in the mA range up to > 1,000 amps is essential for precise evaluation of the SOC/SOH and is possible via automatic selection of different measurement ranges.

Installation on standard battery pole Direct installation on standard battery pole thanks to the integrated shunt on the sensor Very easy plug & play installation thanks to the supplied battery-pole adapter

Low energy demand The sensor responds intelligently to energy demand and enters stand-by mode when the electrical system’s energy demand is low.

Battery types Battery-specific adjustments to the characteristic curves for standard starter, GEL and AGM batteries provide the conditions for high accuracy of SOC evaluation.

ELECTRICS / ELECTRONICS

New generation of module switches: Microswitches Improved energy efficiency The energy system of vehicles is particularly challenged by the increase in control electronics components. As power supply is high cost, there is a trend towards very low control currents that still have to be switched safely.

Maintenance-free The operator expects reliable and maintenance-free functioning for the duration of the vehicle’s life. The definitive parameters are the service life (cycles) of the contact system and the service life of the lighting source.

Our solution: friction-fit snap system and selected contact pairs. The AgNi standard version makes safe switching functions possible even in the mA range.

We supply our customers with the exceptionally wear-resistant “micro-switch system”. The friction-fit snap system minimises wear and tear and accumulation of dirt on the contact surfaces with each switching. The average service life of an LED is up to 100,000 hours.

Highly efficient Power LED light sources also contribute to lowering the power requirements compared to existing switch programs by up to 70% per switch.
