THE PROJECT InselAkademie building
THE Building as the centrepiece
Directly at the entrance to the Wilhelmsburg Island Park, a neighbourhood is being created that unites its different uses around a communally used courtyard. A module in the block-edge structure is the InselAkademie Building – the administrative centrepiece of the InselAkademie project.
The idea for the InselAkademie came from the Association Sports without Boundaries (SOG Sport ohne Grenzen), which was as initiative founded in 2006 by the Wilhelmsburg former professional basketball player Marvin Willoughby and others. The concept ranges from open sports opportunities and educational projects incorporating sports, includes club-affiliated recreational
The coordination of the project will take place from spring 2013 in the office rooms in the InselAkademie Building. Besides, there will be larger premises available for advanced training measures and further social projects. The residential opportunity, in particular the sheltered homes for young people, round off the offers.

The design of the building as well as the design of the adjacent medical centre originates from the architectural office Stand Genehmigungsplanung BOLLES+WILSON from Münster. In its design, it adapts to the nine-storey adjacent building by reason of its ceramic tile facade in shades of green. Haus der Inselakademie

While course and administration rooms will be located in the two bottom floors, living quarters for young people will be created in the two upper floors. Four residential units, including two maisonette apartments each equipped with two bedrooms. A fifth apartment offers a lot of space for a supervised residential group of young people comprising a total of eight ‘room mates’, who will benefit from a large common room.

sports and extends to competitive sports with professional structures. Open and low-threshold offers such as ‘Midnight Basketball’ or ‘Homework Support and Sport’ appeals to the adolescents who are difficult to integrate into fixed organisational structures. Young people participate in the development of new projects and social competences such as team capability are taught. The InselAkademie cooperates with schools, associations and youth welfare facilities in the district. The InselAkademie is a communal project of IBA Hamburg, igs 2013 and SOG. The objective is the support of a project that will assume a socially integrating function for Wilhelmsburg. A further support is the Benno and Inge Behrens Foundation which is especially committed to the sponsoring of sheltered homes for young people.
BOLLES+WILSON, Münster
The implementation of the sports offers will take place in the Island Park Hall. This is located further south in the park – 150 metres away from the InselAkademie Building. Due to the close linking of sports and social opportunities, a place will be created in which the integration into society can be practised in a playful manner. The work of the InselAkademie is therefore a good example of the key theme of IBA ‘Cosmopolis – New opportunities in the city’. the Island Park Hall
Opinion of Marvin Willoughby, managing director InselAkademie, Hamburg “The InselAkademie is a place where children and adolescents can discover and develop their potential. Open sports activities, recreational and competitive sports will be linked with educational opportunities under one roof.“
