A Few Thoughts from Mr. Galati Some mornings I wake up and drive to school in the early gray morning light. I never get down hearted, no matter what the sky is doing, because I know the students at school will find joy and laughter no matter the weather. It isn't always easy to have indoor recess and I know our kids need a chance to run and enjoy the fresh air. But even on those days when the heavy rain or deep cold prevents our normal routine, our students approach the situation with zest and joy. When the hassles of life start to weigh me down or the weather forecast is gloomy I remember what matters most: the thriving culture of our school and the energy of children. I hope your interactions with our students and school fill you with the same joy and life.

Buddies

by: Reina, 5th grade

In Fourth and Fifth grades, you have by L the opportunity to have kindergarten and first grade buddies. You go to your buddie’s classroom first. (For example, my class goes to Mrs. Frisby’s class). Then the teachers pair you up; for example a kindergartener with a fifth grader. Every time you visit your buddy, which is once a week, you have the same one. Every week they go and pick out books for you to read to them. Sometimes, you do other activities. For example, the week before break, we colored gingerbread houses. This week, we made paper snowflakes. If you walk by their classroom, you’ll see a bunch of them taped to their windows. All of these things apply for fourth grade - first grade buddy pairs too. I think that buddies are really fun and SUPER cute.

Class Pet

by Ashton, 2nd grade

This article is about our class pet. She is a lizard. She eats crickets and mealworms and lettuce. She has a heat lamp. It is on for twelve hours. Then it turns off and she goes to sleep. Her name is Daenerys and she also eats blueberries. She licks stuff, that’s how she smells. She does not bite and she sheds her skin a lot. It’s really cool having a class pet.

Calligraphy by: Saskia & Alara,

Rain 5th

grade

The week we got a calligraphy lesson. Miss Mininger takes a calligraphy class at Reed College. Her calligraphy teacher is named Mr. Gregory. Calligraphy is a word that means beautiful writing. Each country has their own special writing from a long time ago. Like curvy writing and sharp edged writing. There is a special pen used to write calligraphy. Its tip is shaped like a highlighter tip but metal. We also got to learn about the history of the alphabet. Here’s how it started: a long time ago in 3000 BCE people used pictures to describe objects. So like aleph meant cow/ox, and as time passed, people made it more simple, and started to use the letter we know today as the letter A. We are really enjoying calligraphy. Thank you, Miss Mininger!

O.B.O.B.

by Madeline, 4th grade

O.B.O.B. stands for Oregon Battle Of the Books. O.B.O.B. is a competition about books. First, you get 16 books that librarians choose. Then, you get a team of four people, and you divide 16 books so each person gets four books. Next, you read those books, and you have team meetings and practice doing questions. Finally, you go to your school to compete against different teams. There are three competitions. There is the 8 Ball, the Fantastic 4, and the Final 2. You can play in O.B.O.B. only if you’re in grades 3, 4, or 5. At the competition, you are up against other teams and you earn points. Our team must answer questions in order to get points. This happens back and forth. This can be very nerveracking since we have to know our books well. I hope you will come to the competition.

by: Eli, 4th grade

It has been very rainy lately. This means we have to do indoor recess. It also makes things muddy. Some things you can do at indoor recess are draw, write, or play board games. Rain is caused by condensation in the clouds. Although rain is good, it makes it hard to do things outside.

Winter Olympics by: Ryan, 4th grade

In gym we are learning hockey so that we can play it in the Winter Olympics. We will have about five sports to play in the Olympics. Although I don’t know when the Olympics is taking place I’m very excited. Thank you Miss B!

The Power of Reading by: Andre, Ryan & Keegan, Kindergarten

In Ms. Frisby’s class we are learning how to read. We are learning how letters make words like the site words. Site words are like I, my, am, me, and the. We are learning how to sound out words and we read them. We remember words and we see them when we read. We read words quietly by using a whisper phone. We whisper into the phone and then we can hear our voice reading because it is a tube. One end goes in our ear and the other end is outside our mouth. Reading is fun and we read every day.

At A Glance

This week we highlight Fourth and Fifth Grades

Fourth Grade: We are so excited to be back from the break, and are looking forward to a fun, productive 2018! In math we are finishing up our fraction/division unit, and will be moving on to Unit 4, which covers geometry. We will also be beginning our NW Native Americans unit, which may include a research report component and/or diorama project. Finally, please be on the lookout for information regarding our Oregon Trail Overnight from your child's teacher within the next few weeks. Happy New Year! Fifth Grade: The fifth grade students have been engaged in wondering about the sun, moon, and stars, working on speeches, writing narrative pieces, exploring and finding out about settlements in the new world, working with divisibility and fractions, and doing novel studies with Esperanza Rising and Bridge to Terabithia. All of these areas of study are just a part of the fifth grade day. In addition to our daily routines, our classes have begun to talk about end of the year activities like the Safety Patrol picnic at Oaks Park in May and the OMSI overnight May 16, 17, 18, 2018 at Camp Gray in Newport, Oregon. Our fifth graders are almost half way to becoming sixth grade students and the teachers are continuing to work on the skills they will need in order to transition and be successful at Sellwood Middle School.

OMSI Planetarium

by Julia & Amy, 5th grade

Common Sense Comics by: Shea, 5th grade

Clouds by: Michael, 2nd grade

Last week Miss Mininger and Mr. Crouser’s 5th grade classes went on a field trip to the OMSI Planetarium. We went there because we studied the solar system in our science unit! We learned about the stages of the moon and the constellations. We also took our information that we learned about the planets and put them into Raps that we had to perform. In the morning we walked to the orange line station and got to take the MAX. When we got to the planetarium we watched to presentation/videos. This field trip was super fun and we learned a lot.

In Ms. Cronen’s class we are learning about clouds. There are different kinds of clouds. Some of the clouds make tornadoes and other clouds make rain and some clouds are high clouds. I like learning about clouds.
