Volume 5, Issue 9 November 2, 2017
A Few Thoughts from Mr. Galati Next week, on November 8th and 9th, are our annual ParentTeacher Conferences. I think this may be the most important week of the academic year for both parents and the Llewellyn staff. During the hustle and bustle of our lives, we rarely have the chance to really sit down and talk about our kids. That’s really what conferences are all about. It’s the chance for you to tell us about your child – their hopes and dreams – their unique strengths and weaknesses – their joys and anxieties. It’s a time for everyone who cares about each student to really talk about how to help them achieve success – and what that success might look like for each of them. It’s a time to plan together and find strategies to support and encourage each student. A time to help them discover their passions, their talents, and dreams they didn’t know they had. I know each conference is very short, and that’s a lot to fit in, but I’ve seen it year in and year out (with our Llewellyn students and with my own children, old as they may be). A child really needs cheerleaders and coaches everywhere in their lives. I look forward to next week! Please don’t hesitate to stop by the office to tell me how I can assist in supporting the success of your student!
Pumpkin Carving by Adeline, 4th grade
Every by L year there is one date in
October when some kids bring in their carved pumpkins. There is a large orange sheets of paper separating each class. All of the pumpkins are laid out over the paper. After each class is out of the building a teacher or staff will come to the classrooms and write them a note and give them a Haloween pencil. When the class is back they see all of the notes and pencils and feel good about their pumpkins. It is my favorite day of the year.

The moon is something colder and darker Than a black sky filled with evil light The moon drips sickly sweet death Onto the dirt, which becomes poisonous night flowers Onto the trees, which transform into thorny vegetation Onto the moors, which shine with white light, lighting the way For the moon is something colder and darker But it is something kinder Than its coldness and darkness It shows death and light mercilessness and sympathy
Rock, Paper, Scissors Conga Line by: Julia, Amy, & Charlie, 5th grade
On Friday, we played Rock, Paper, Scissors Congo Line with Mr. Crouser’s class. Mrs. Clark taught Miss Mininger and Miss Mininger taught us! The concept of this game is to get the most people in your conga line. The rules of this game are; you have to get a partner and then you play Rock, Paper Scissors with them. Whoever loses, goes on the winner’s conga line. Then you cheer them on. Then the winners play against the other winners and it goes on and on and on and on until someone has everybody in their conga line. It was fun!
CBA stands for Classical Ballet Academy. What CBA offers is jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, and modern dance. The clothes that you wear can change over time, plus there are so many different types of dance that you can do, but we will focus on Ballet. We wear tights, a leotard and a bun. We wear our tights under our leotards and our leotards are spaghetti straps. For our tights, they are really light blush pink. Our buns are twisted up and bobbie pinned. You can wear scrunchies or hair clips in you want. The next topic is how to get ready for pointe shoes. If you don’t know what pointe shoes are, they are shoes with glue and other things that make the platform hard for you to go on your toes. In order to get ready for pointe shoes, you need to have strong feet, and you have to balance in demi pointe for eight seconds, which is basically half of pointe. Our shows are an all-kids production. During the Winter season we perform a variety of shows. The Nutcracker (Ballet), A Christmas Carol (Jazz), The Children’s Nutcracker (Ballet), and The Sweet Suit (Ballet). We perform in the Lincoln Performance Hall. Then we have three Spring shows that are always different each year. For our costumes, we try them on in our whole ballet day. Some of the roles are The Nutcracker, Clara, Snowflakes, Russians, and Arabians. There are tons of other roles.

This week we highlight Kindergarten and First Grades & Music
Kindergarten: We are deep into our tree study. This month we have enjoyed working with Lisa from Talk About Trees. Earlier this month she took us on a Tree Walk and last week she taught us how to make paper. Now we are gearing up for our field trip to Oaks Bottom. If you haven't already done so, please remember to turn in your permission slip. Thank you so much to all of the volunteers to helped out with our class Halloween parties. It was such a fun, community building event. First Grade: In first grade we are gearing up for conferences. We have been re-assessing our students and are excited to share their progress with you next Wednesday and Thursday. We are working on addition and subtraction in math, along with additional practice with time and coins. We are focused on reading strategies for fluency and comprehension during Daily 5. We just finished up our How To writing and will be moving into Personal Narratives. Thank you to all of you who helped us with our first field trip and making the Pumpkin Carving Contest a success. Music: Our third, fourth and fifth graders have been learning to play the recorders over the past month or so with the goal of all students being able to play five songs independently, earning their "Purple Belt". Ask to see your student's belts that they have earned! I am certain they would be more than happy to show you. Kindergarten and first grade have begun learning songs for their programs in November and December with a lot of enthusiasm. It is so exciting to hear them using their best singing voices as they prepare songs for their loved ones to hear. They have such a sense of pride when they can notice how wonderful they actually sound. The excitement continues... Second grade has been learning to compose together using the names of food. They now become the "orchestra" as they perform everyone's composition. They are noticing the important difference of instruments that are designed to maintain the beat (a drum) and other instruments to carry the rhythm. They will begin working on learning songs for their program as soon as next week so they will be prepared before we leave for winter break.
The Pumpkin Carving Contest
by: Eli, 5th grade
Leaf Flight by: Lola, 5th grade
This week we had a pumpkin carving contest. Everyone who wanted to brought a pumpkin in that they had carved. Then they put the pumpkins on a piece of paper outside their class. Finally the teachers gave awards to each pumpkin. I thought some of the pumpkins carved where silly. For instance, someone carved a pineapple! The pumpkin carving contest was super interesting and I loved all the pumpkins that were carved.
Last week there was lots of red, orange, and yellow leaves all over the field. They fell off the trees hovering our field. A few people started picking up leaves and throwing them at people. Then a lot more people joined and everyone said, “Leaf fight!”. At the end, everyone had leaves in their hair and clothes. It was sooo much fun! What a way to end the day!
