A Few Thoughts from Mr. Galati

Scrapbooking

Over the course of the year, we have had a variety of fundraisers. I want to thank you all for stepping up and helping us with them. This coming Saturday evening, we have what just might be my favorite event; I get such a kick it of it! In many way, it brings me back to my childhood in school when we played BINGO. There is something great about being close to a bingo and the excitement of “PLEASE call out B-4”. There are times that the number you are most hoping for is called, yet it is also fun to watch the excitement of others faces when their number is called. Last year many of our teachers joined us and we all had a blast. It was great to spend time together as a community, supporting our school and playing together. Please know that your contributions assist our Llewellyn Foundation. The Foundation monies are used each year for staffing. Bingo night will have a lot of winners, a lot of comradery, and a lot of fun. Llewellyn, as I have said so many times before, is truly a community and it displays itself in so many ways for our KIDS. Come join us at Bingo Night this Saturday the 3rd at Westmoreland Union Manor located at 6404 SE 23rd from 7:0010:00 pm. It will be a night that will be fun, exciting, but most of all a true community event.

Mininger runs an after school Scrapbooking class. She provides all of the supplies but we bring our own photos. The class is for 3rd-5th graders, and its super fun! On the first day of scrapbooking, you choose the color of your scrapbook. Some examples are: navy blue, light blue, red, baby blue, black, tan, and purple. Then you choose twenty sheets of patterns (or plain) scrapbook paper. Miss Mininger teaches us how to make our scrapbook look unique by matting photos. She also shows us how to use washi tape and stickers in a decorative way (she’s obsessed with washi tape!) Miss Mininger has buckets of stickers and scraps to use in your scrapbook. The class is super fun and our scrapbooks always turn out beautiful!

The Klamath Tribe

by: Brooks, 4th grade

In Mr. Reardon’s class we are learning about Native Americans. So far, I am learning about the Klamath tribe. Other kids also have tribes that they are learning about. Once we have researched our tribe, we write a paper. We will write about the food they eat, the tools they use and how they get around. I think learning about Native Americans is really cool. Their culture is way different and they had to hunt for food. All we have to do is go the store. by L

Fairy Houses

Cactus Art

by: Saskia & Alara, 5th grade

by: Lily & Berlin, 2nd grade & Kindergarten

At the YMCA, we were making Fairy Houses. After we finish them, we get to hang them outside our own houses. To make a fairy house, you glue lots of popsicle sticks together to make a carpet for them to sleep on. We then build walls out of popsicle sticks. Then we make a roof to keep the fairies dry so that they can fly. We know that fairies cannot fly in the rain because their wings will droop when they get wet. We then get to go outside and get grass, moss and flowers to put on the roof and then inside the house. We like making fairy houses at the YMCA.

Pizza Day

by: Josie, Kindergarten

I love Pizza day. It is so amazing! I like cheese pizza. Pizza day is once a week. I also know that it is pizza day because I can smell it in the halls. Are you going to have Pizza?

This week we did an art project of cacti in a pot. The main part of the project was the bowl. We first did a sketch of the bowl using ovals and then we drew it on water color paper. The bowl is a shape that is made with curvy lines to make it look three-dimensional. The bowl is then covered with patterns and designs. After that, we designed the cacti, which was drawing how the cacti would be shaped and how they would look. Miss Mininger put up a lot of examples of different cacti to draw. After all of that we went over the lines with a sharpie. Then we water color it and then we’re done!

The Power of Solids and Liquids by: Andre & Ryan, Kindergarten

Hydrocephalus by: Carter, 2nd grade

Hi, I'm Carter John Ferguson. I am in Mrs. Cronen’s second grade class. I have hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus means I have too much fluid in my head which puts pressure on my brain. Under my skin, on my head, I have a silicone shunt. Attached to my shunt is a tube that runs all the way to my tummy and drains all the fluid. I have to have surgery when it stops working. I have had twenty brain surgeries but none for a long time. I just have to be careful I don't bonk my head really hard because the shunt could crack.

In Ms. Frisby’s class we are studying about solids and liquids in science. Liquids are moving like water molecules, juice, dirty water and even soap. Solids are rock and hard things. Those things that don’t slosh around. When these two things get together the liquids splash on top of the solids and the solids get wet but they stay as a solid. If you put a solid on the ground and you put liquid on it will spill off of the solid (rock). We are learning a lot and the experiments are fun.

At A Glance

This week we highlight Second and Third Grades

Second Grade: Second grade is working hard on learning about place value and solving double-digit word problems. Our students are creating a compilation of all their newly acquired knowledge on weather with many charts, informational articles, diagrams and art work. The students are excited to earn their meteorologist badges for becoming weather experts! In writing, we will be moving into persuasive letter writing during the month of February. We have been using our library/technology time to explore Google Docs and Slides. Room parents are starting to work on auction baskets and auction art. If you would like to contribute in some way, please contact your child's teacher. Third Grade: Happy New Year from the third grade teachers! We have wrapped up our Informational/Expository Writing Unit and are heading toward our largest project of the year, Important Person Biography Speeches. This is always a fun and exciting time. Students read a biography/autobiography of an important person and then write and prepare a speech for class presentation. Your teacher will give you all the information and deadlines. Multiplication and Division continue in Math. Student expectations for learning math multiplication facts have been shared with your students, so practice! As we continue the year, we are happy to see the growth in independent work and responsibility in our students. Being attentive, applying learning, and finding resources and ways to support their own learning is an important ability now and into the future. Thanks for sending your students our way!

Adding Fractions by: Ashley,

Soccer at Recess

by: Eli, 4th grade

grade

In Ms. Biven’s class we are learning about adding fractions. In class, we took tiles and added a half and 2/4’s to it which equals a whole. Fractions are really hard but if you know how to put a fraction in different ways it is easier. For example, 3/6 is equal to 1/2. If you know some of these rules, you can get the right answer. Just the other day we had laminated paper egg cartons. We learned how to add fractions to them. For example, we have small tiles in them and add more tiles. We are learning ways to do fractions.

At recess I like to play Soccer. Lately it has been rainy so we can’t go on the field. We often still play despite the weather. Sometimes the ball goes over the fence when we play on the asphalt. Usually someone walking on the street will get the ball for us. When I play, I am the goalie and it is a great time. Soccer is fun to play and I suggest you try it.
