Testimonials Brazil is a wonderful country and USP is one of the best universities.

New friendships I was admitted to the Obstetrics program at the Universidade de São Paulo via an agreement between Brazil and my home country, Cape Verde, under the auspices of the Program for Partner Undergraduate Students. Our first days of classes were great, because we were the first and only Africans from Cape Verde to come to study at USP/EACH (School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities). Everyone was curious to meet us and to learn about life in our country. I ended up meeting most of the students in the college, and they were all really cool, receptive, nice and friendly.

Jassira Maria Ortet Fernandes

Cape Verdean Student. SHe was admitted to USP via the Program for Partner Undergraduate Students (PEC-G)

Enjoy your exchange program to the max, you won’t regret it.

Culture and Diversity I have been studying anthropology for two semesters at USP as an exchange student. Studying and living here has changed the way I see Brazil. I liked the university from the very beginning and here I have the opportunity to interact with people from different nationalities, allowing me to acquire new knowledge and broaden my worldview. Markets on weekends, “sambas” that take place in the city, great parties, exhibitions, displays… São Paulo is a city where you always find something going on, there’s always something to do, you just have to stay tuned in.

Meredith Castro Rios

Peruvian student. she was admitted to USP as an exchange student via the CINDA Student Mobility Program Pontifícia Universidad Católica del Peru

Universidade de São Paulo Find your way around the several different Schools which make up the university and which are located all over the state

“Luiz de Queiroz” College of Agriculture Praça do Relógio

Universidade de São Paulo is one of the largest and most important institutions of higher education and research in Brazil and Latin America. Founded in 1934, USP is a public state institution (it does not charge tuition fees) and has campi placed in eight cities spread throughout the state of São Paulo. With education and research activities in all academic fields, USP offers 300 undergraduate programs, 222 graduate programs (both Master's and Doctoral (PhD) degrees) and 984 extracurricular programs. In total, there are about 94 thousand students enrolled in 48 Schools (faculties and institutes) which make up USP. Furthermore, the university houses four important museums which receive over 1million visitors per year. In addition, USP runs health centers and two major hospitals. It also works in partnership with Hospital das Clínicas of Ribeirão Preto and Hospital das Clínicas of São Paulo, the later considered one of the leading hospitals in Latin America. Over 87% of the approximately 6 thousand professors are full time employees. This reinforces the university’s commitment to achieving excellence in terms of its personnel and of generation of knowledge.

USP’s scientific productivity totals an average of over 25 thousand publications per year, including indexed scientific journals, books, reports etc. This represents a significant proportion of the country’s output. The university is also concerned with the application of discoveries made by its research centers and laboratories, as well as with the effective transfer of these findings to society in general. For this reason many members of the USP community are in permanent partnership with industries, companies, offices and health centers specialized in the development of projects and products and in the practical application of new technologies and products. The university also plays an important role in South America, since it attracts many students, professors and technicians from the neighboring countries and from all parts of the world. USP is an institution that evolves rapidly in its intent towards greater internationalization, which has been accompanied by its ever growing visibility on the world stage. It has signed over a thousand cooperation and exchange agreements with important institutions in the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania, and is constantly working towards increasing this number. The university currently welcomes about 2,200 undergraduate and graduate foreign students per year and sends abroad an even bigger number as part of its student mobility program. Bauru

The town of Bauru has its origins in the cultivation of coffee, in the 19th century, and over the decades has received immigrants from different nationalities. It is a medium sized town, with about 360,000 inhabitants* , and it is strategically located at the confluence of important roads and rail connections, making Bauru’s economy one of the most influential in Western São Paulo state. Its valuable historical heritage, along with its notable level of scientific enterprise and the large student population (around 25,000) lead to a busy social and cultural life, and ensure that Bauru is, above all, a town headed towards the future.

Lorena

Located in the Paraíba River Valley, the town is almost equidistant from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and has excellent transport links. Its population is around 82,000 people*, out of which approximately 5,000 are students. After a period of predominant coffee production and livestock-related activities, Lorena has become industrialized and has taken its place as one of the Valley’s most important economic centers. In this town where technology blends with history, Universidade de São Paulo has found a fertile terrain for education and research.

Ribeirão Preto

Ribeirão Preto has its origins in the livestock industry, but it was soon overtaken by coffee production as its main economic activity. The town has received so many immigrants (mostly Italians) that, in the beginning of the 20th century, more than half of its inhabitants were not native Portuguese speakers. Nowadays, with over 605,000 people*, Ribeirão Preto is considered an attractive option for business enterprises, besides being an economic highlight in its region. The diversified cultural life, the rich historic heritage and the talent for business are remarkable characteristics of the city. Definitely, Ribeirão Preto is a big town with aspects of a small town.

São Carlos

Like many other cities of the region, at first São Carlos was largely dedicated to the production of coffee. Subsequently, the changing economy forced modernization and with it came the need to invest in new infrastructure. This, allied to the abundant immigrant workforce (mostly Italians), led to the industrialization of the city. São Carlos, which has become known for pioneering innovation and an enterprising spirit, came to possess a well-developed urban infrastructure before many other Brazilian cities. Thus it has turned into one of the most representative economies of its region and also a Brazilian landmark in terms of technology and education.

It is commonly applied between November and January. Further information can be found at:

2 Transfer Transfer from other higher education institutions (both Brazilian or foreign) is only possible when vacancies are available after regular enrollment and internal transfer processes (from one USP School to another). This admission process happens via preselection and specific examinations, both applied by FUVEST. Further information can be found at:

3 Program for Partner Undergraduate Students (PEC-G) This is a cooperation program between Brazil and countries which Brazil maintains educational and cultural agreements with (especially from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean). The goal is to offer young students from these countries the opportunity to undertake their full undergraduate studies at USP. To be eligible for the program, it is necessary to fulfill the following requirements:

• Be a citizen of the developing countries which Brazil maintains an Educational and Cultural Cooperation Agreement with; • Possess a High School diploma or equivalent; • Be a Foreign Citizen aged between 18 and 25 years old; • Possess a Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese Language (CELPE-Bras), in the case of students from non-CPLP countries (Portuguese Speaking Countries Community). The students’ evaluation is based on their High School résumé or equivalent and on their financial conditions. For more information, please visit: Should a student be selected to take part in the program, he/she must submit the following documents for registration at the International Office and for enrollment two weeks before classes begin: • Covering letter (MRE - Ministry of Foreign Affairs); • Declaration of commitment; • Term of Financial Responsibility; • School Transcript/ High School Diploma and Birth Certificate (all documents must be duly sealed and recognized by the Brazilian Embassy); • Request for Consular Visa; • Passport

Documents to be attached on the online application: • A reference letter, written by a professor from the home institution; • A copy of the student’s transcript issued by the home institution accompanied by a simple translation into Portuguese; • A Study Plan, including a list of disciplines the candidate intends to take at USP (you can find the list of disciplines at . Select the School, the course and then the disciplines); • Copy of the pages of the applicant’s passport which include personal data (including the expiration date); • Digital photography for the document, in “.jpg” format and maximum size of 50Kb Any questions concerning Exchange Students’ mobility must be sent to [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] or [email protected]

Important!
