Interview guide Techniques based on the work of Steinar Kvale

Steinar Kvale If you want to know, how people understand and view their society / culture, why not talk with them? With an interview – conversation you listen to the informant talk about his/her culture with his/ her own world. It is central for the qualitative interview that the informants point of view is recorded.

Two metaphors

The miner Knowledge is metal hidden and the miner finds the precious metal / knowledge Some look for objective facts that can be quantified others look for essential lumps of knowledge / meaning In both cases knowlegde is hidden deep within the interview person and waits to be unraveled. The task is to collect this knowledge as pure as possible. Undefiled by your subjective ideas of the interview persons world view and society

transcribtion The interviewer collects data and lumps of meaning from the subjects pure experiences with out defile it with the use of leading questions… The precious lumps of knowledge and meaning is washed clean by transcribing the interview. They remain constant and pure despite they change form from spoken to written word

analysis The essential lumps of meanings is collected, compared and analyzed The value of the product is decided upon when they are compared to the outside objective world (reality check) and or the inside subjective world (the experience of the field-worker, evaluate on the process )

The traveller By this metaphor we understand the interviewer as a traveller, who has a story to tell when they return back home The traveller walks through the land and talks with the people he meets He either walks randomly or follows a map

He may investigate places of certain interest Spends time among the locals, whom he ask to tell their stories

data The traveller describes the world he visits in a manner that can be retold as stories. Thick description The possible perspectives of the stories is decided by the traveller who interprets these, and retell them in a manner that makes them comprehensive to the listeners in his homeland. The stories are confirmed through the listeners accepting of them. Or the opposite disconfirmed/ rejection

The journey The journey becomes an image of recognition Not only does it lead to new knowledge, it may very well happen that the traveller changes as a result of the trip The journey can lead to reflection and a cultural self awareness for the traveller and might also end up challenge the very world view of his…

Conversation It is no secret that conversation is part of human culture and the mean through wich we learn about our culture and history
